New Universal Commercial? Kinda Rude...

spatenfloot said:
The only point the commercial is making is that you don't have to choose Disney simply because you have kids. Many people, especially on his board, think you can't go to Universal if you have young children. In reality there is a lot for small children to do in both Universal parks. Many parents think that their kids must like Disney because they did when they were little.

Very well said. My DS (9) thinks that Universal is only for grown ups. he doesnt want to go, so...I 'm going by myslef next month.

Okay - then my question is... What is there to do for a week in Universal? Honestly. I used to work down in Disney - and took a few trips to Universal and IOA. In 2 1/2 days we had finished everything in both parks. So I'm just curious as to what else they have to entertain. Maybe I'll do some research on the subject now. ;)

you can spend a week at Universal like some people spend 2 weeks at Disney...relaxing and checking out everything at your own pace...checking out Citywalk, the other hotels, retaurants, pools, etc....even Wet'N'Wild (which is now owned by Universal, but obviously isn't the same as the Disney water parks) BTW Rumor has it they are going to build another water park on Universal property and remove Wet'N'Wild due to increased I-drive property costs.

There's some spots at IOA I just love to sit at and take in the atmosphere...like the Thunder Falls Terrace and Enchanted Oak Tavern

My son is 8 and loves Universal, it's always been his favourite park, especially Woody and ET.

I think when I return, show him photos and tell him about it, he will want to go....I love Disney and all, but would love to be able to split up trips in the future between the two.

put it back up phamton, it was good. I had missed peter's allegations that the UO parks only appear to be busy due to poor crowd management. :) this is the greatest thread I have ever read. I'm ready to go home sick and drive over for a spin on MIB.

I don't know if that was directed at me or not, but I never said anything about Universals crowd management.

phamton had pulled up some of your past slams at UO. there was definately a quote from you about that in her post. her point was that you have been jabbing at UO long before this thread started.

Ah so she felt the need to bring back ancient posts. To be honest I don't even remember saying that.

I must say this thread is pretty amusing. I'm a huge Disney Freak but also love Universal. Actually couldn't imagine doing one and not the other. Different atmosphere, different rides, both exceptional.
The thing that I love is how people get so worked up about it. Bottom line is Disney makes money off Universal fans and Universal makes money off Disney fans. And although I have not seen the commercial, don't get those up here in Canada, it seems they're just trying to lure a few more people over. It actually sounds kind of humorous.
One thing is for certain though, as much as people are talking about it, I guess the marketing department for Universal should get a pat on the back. No such thing as bad publicity. The idea of a television commercial is to get people talking about the product, regardless of how. It seems like they've done a pretty good job.

Hardly ancient posts. The post I pulled up was from the middle of December.

About express pass, you said: "because people are use to being cheated and ripped off at Universal."

My favorite is the one where you pay this guy to park your car, then you ride up to the big area with people behind these glass windows, and then before you know it.....They suck out your brain

You said: "You must be confused, thats at Universal."

About the crowds at Universal. you said: "Their 2005 profits also droped by 25%. I think the primary reason their parks seem busy is their very poor crowd management skills."

Edited to add: I certainly don't know where you are getting that 25% profit drop figure. You have posted that in several posts. The attendance dropped 8% but the spending actually increased last year. Possibly you are confusing profit with expenses invloved in building the Mummy. New rides do cost a big chunk of money as does rising gas prices for running some of the effects on Jaws, earthquake, Mummy, etc. I suspect Disney will be facing expenses related to building Everest but seriously doubt it will mean that the park is losing money. Universal actually made more money last year than 2004 from consumer spending.

your honor, the defense rests it's case.

last sunday we went to WDW. if it wasn't for the superbowl this sunday, we'd be lining up to get "cheated and ripped off" at Universal. but, we're crazy like that. :)

Excellent idea that applies even on this thread for the Disney defenders who can't just like WDW, but must trash Universal in order to demonstrate their Disney passion. I prefer WDW, but the idea that other people may go to Universal doesn't give me the willies.
That's exactly what I was saying. :thumbsup2 They are fine with bashing universal but no one speak ill ever of disney. Not that the commercial was offensive anyway.

Thank-you! That's what I was thinking. Some of these posts remind me of the kid on the playground that everyone teased because they were so whiny. It also brings me back to debate class when our coach said there's no way to debate someone who doesn't have an open mind. I can't believe the post where the parent says that their kids wouldn't like Universal because the parent is a WDW freak! It shows that the parent is real interested in raising a child with an intellectual curiosity-ummm, I don't think so. Or what about the posts that state the little girl looks like a brat? I sure hope then that these parents do not allow their children to watch ANY tv because there is a plethora of bratty kids all over tv-Disney channel included. Also, those who are offended by the Universal commercial-what do you do during political campaign season?
I like both parks. It amazes me that so many take these commercials so seriously-they are not meant as a personal attack. :scared1:

:thumbsup2 good points

Fine but its not a very good point. The fact is no one on these boards (a disney discussion board) was slamming Universal until Universal started slamming Disney.
Who slammed Disney? I don't get where the commercial is a slam on Disney? What because they are disney they can't have a sense of humor about themselves? And I doubt disney is nearly as offended as some on here are acting like they are. And yes it is a Disney discussion board but if you check you will see threads about Universal/IOA and Seaworld. I love disney as much as the next person but I do have a sense of humor.

phamton's last post shows peter11435 has been slamming UO as of late.

he can't keep his posts straight. I have no idea why he hates Universal Studios the way he does.

I don't hate US. In fact I think the parks are actually pretty good. My complaint was about there commercial not there parks. Do I like Disney much better, you bet. Do I think Disney is much better, you bet. But that doesn't mean I hate US. I just don't like it when companies (any company) knock another publicaly to make themselves look better. There are many far better ways to advertise your product.

I have been on these boards for seven years now. I have seen people complain about both Disney and Universal. I agree that people shouldn't go to the Universal boards and talk about how they hate Universal. As you can imagine I do not visit that board and was unaware of that happening often. My point was simply that it is very rare that here on the Disney board we get into an entended anti Universal Discussion, and the fact is in this case it was brought on by Universal itself.

Here's an example from just today on the Community Board.

Universal Studios parent company saw a 25% drop in profit. Universal Studios Orlando saw an 11% drop in revenue. Even though guest spending per guest increased there were less guests. Thus the resorts revenue went down. Combine this with increased spending and profit drops considerably as well.

Well, that is not what Bob Gault (president of Universal Orlando) announced 2 weeks ago. It was announced that the profit was up last year in spite of a drop in attendance. I'm still waiting for your source.
