New Universal Commercial? Kinda Rude...

I'd say the parks have very little to do with GE's finances. GE is a huge conglomerate making tons of products including power plant systems which run into the millions for each one. The same can be said for Disney which is another huge corporation with many divisions.

"NBC Uni drives GE Q2 earnings

By Georg Szalai
NEW YORK -- General Electric on Friday reported record second-quarter earnings as strong revenue and bottom-line gains at NBC Universal helped boost overall figures.

Results at the entertainment unit were affected by one-time effects in the period, without which its profit gain would have been sharply reduced. The NBC broadcast network and its TV stations continue to feel pressure in primetime, while NBC Uni's film and other properties remain on solid growth tracks, GE said.

NBC Uni revenue jumped 35% year-over-year to $3.9 billion in the latest quarter, bringing the unit's total gains for the first half of this year to 68%. That exceeded overall GE revenue growth of 13% to $41.6 billion in the quarter and 16% for the first half.

Profit at NBC Uni rose 27% to $979 million in the second quarter, slightly underperforming the overall GE gain of 29% to $6.2 billion, which was boosted by one unit swinging to a profit and a big earnings jump at a second unit. However, excluding one-time special gains and losses, NBC Uni profit would have risen only 4%."

a advert is a advert!

is that honestly what all the fuss is about?

i understand all your points...but...it's just an advert. it shouldn't really matter if it's relivant or not. if it's about the product then that's cool.

as for the "i hate universal" you're entitled to that

I bet if someone asked those kiddos where they'd rather go they'd choose DISNEY!!! I know my kids would...

There is far more to NBC Universal than the parks in Orlando.

Disney, Storms Blamed For Universal Earnings, Attendance Decline
POSTED: 3:08 pm EST November 17, 2005
UPDATED: 3:13 pm EST November 17, 2005

One of Central Florida's largest employers, Universal Orlando, saw its profits drop 25 percent from July until October, according to a Local 6 News report.

Attendance at Universal Orlando's two theme parks, Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure was also off (a combined) 16 percent.

Universal Orlando blamed skyrocketing gas prices, a record hurricane season and Disney's Worldwide 50th Anniversary Celebration of Disneyland for the drops, Local 6 News reported.

The new numbers do not include Universal's profitable Halloween Horror Nights, Local 6 News reported.

Watch Local 6 News for more on this story.

If you want to look this was posted and talked about on IOACentral by many of you.

I'm glad you posted this!
I have seen it a few times and was thinking the same thing! I wondering when there would be a post. A day away from the boards and it's pages long already. :) I haven't read through all the posts yet, but I will!! It's funny, but at the same time such a cheap shot! Oh well, what ever they can do to make money, right? ;)

Attendance has been down at Universal. They need to try something I guess.

This must be what you have been referring to when you said, "Universal Studios parent company saw a 25% drop in profit" : One of Central Florida's largest employers, Universal Orlando, saw its profits drop 25 percent from July until October.

This was in reference to the park's revenue during the hurricane season, not overall revenue for 2005 and not for the parent company. There is a big difference.

Ouch, didn't mean to offend anyone, :confused3 just an observation. Everybody has different tastes, mine is Disney...

Sorry, guys. I thought the commercial was pretty funny. I absolutely love Disney. Good grief, I moved half way across the country to live near WDW. That doesn't mean I can't appreciate a little friendly competition between Disney and Universal. I have an AP to WDW. I also have an AP to Universal. They are both terrific and enough differences between the two to make them both fun. Even when my DD was little, she loved Universal and WDW. There is plenty to do at Universal for all members of the family if you are willing to look around. IMHO, there is plenty of room for both Disney and Universal in Florida and the healthy competition between them keeps them both striving to improve.

You are not being disloyal to Disney to laugh at them a little!

Actually that was a 3 month period not for the whole year. You stated that Universal lost 25% in revenue for the year which is hardly the case. I will say it once again: Universal increased their revenue last year according to the president of Universal Orlando.

Where are the many of us who were talking about it on IOACentral? I am a moderator there and I don't recognize many names on that thread that participated on this thread.

All I'm asking is that you back up your statements with facts. You have stated the 25% drop in several threads only to be shown that it isn't accurate.

You don't have to like Universal---that is your right. Just don't pull stats out of the air to try and prove a point or you will be called on it everytime.

The stat was not pulled from the air. The stat is fact I only made the mistake of thinking it was for the year rather than for the quarter. For that I apoligize. However it doesn't change the fact that the 25% drop was accurate for that quarter, and was not pulled out of the air. It may very well be true that Universals profit increased for the year.

There was at least one person who posted in both this thread as well as the one at IOAcentral. The fact is I do like Universal, however I don't like it when companies (any company even Disney) chooses to attack another in its marketing. Afterall that is what this thread is really about.

Thanks Feralpeg for being the voice of reason. ITA. I get so aggravated at the people on these boards that think "Universal" is a bad word. I always laugh when I see a thread or post where someone is asking if it is "cheating on Disney" to go to Universal. Come on people, it's a theme park, not a religion. :p I love WDW and Universal for different reasons. We go to WDW alot more, but that's just our choice. I thought the commercial was a hoot.
