New Universal Commercial? Kinda Rude...

Thanks Feralpeg for being the voice of reason. ITA. I get so aggravated at the people on these boards that think "Universal" is a bad word. I always laugh when I see a thread or post where someone is asking if it is "cheating on Disney" to go to Universal. Come on people, it's a theme park, not a religion. :p I love WDW and Universal for different reasons. We go to WDW alot more, but that's just our choice. I thought the commercial was a hoot.

I agree too, as I said earlier, we like Disney AND Universal , it's just so may people appear sort of Disney obsessed like you cannot say a wrong thing about it, the recent 'cheating on Disney' thread quite frankly was laughable.

We visit from the UK every year and have always liked both sets of parks, some better than others.
Whilst we all have differences of opinion if there is healthy competetion between them both that ensures Orlando remains a popular place to visit, then surely that is a good thing not bad.

yes. good point johny

also i guess the universal parks are a nice change from the usual toy story or mickey mouse atmosphere of the disney parks

At least there are a few voices of reason around here :teeth:

I haven't seen the commercial, but based off of the recount of it on this thread, I don't have a problem with the commercial. It's just marketing...and I don't equate it to politicians' commercials b/c most of them are insulting their competition rather than just pointing out political differences. This commercial pokes a little fun in the process of pointing out the differences. I don't find it harsh or rude.

Well said.
Orlando is a wonderful place to visit and if the whole magic is because Universal AND Disney are such great places to visit then that's fine for everyone.
It is not a competetion for me, I have been to Florida 13 times and that will be 14 this coming August.
Us Brits love Florida, Disney, Universal, the climate, the people - it's a friendly warm place to visit.

These boards are about difference of opinion, it would be boring if we all felt the same way about things, it would be boring if WDW and Universal were the same, it's the differences that give us something to talk about - but come on guys, if the video has provoked discussion then great...but let's just accept both parks are part of the attraction for many many people....and they can sit side by side.

I don't get this whole loyal/disloyal thing, because as long as both parks exist it means more fun for me. However, I found the commercial lame. I actually winced because stuff like that makes Universal sound desperate, IMO. And I love Universal. I'm still very upset that we were unable to go and I was unable to ride the Mummy this last trip (darn that stupid illness I got!). A commercial showing the Mummy would be enough to make my haul my butt in Universal again and again. And the Jurassic Park river adventure is enough to get me back in IOA again and again.

I kinda wonder if people would get this worked up over their religion or race being made fun of......

Please, people, do us a favor and don't answer that last question. :rolleyes2

I have not seen the commercial yet, but my dad was telling me about it today. I want to see it- the one where they say "Fairy tales and pixie dust not your thing?" or whatever makes me sort of mad. I know it's just marketing, but grrrrr.

I agree, I don't think it's a big deal either, but I thought that the latest WDW commercial WAS poking fun at UO. The commercial where the parents can be superheroes just by taking their kids to WDW. I think that's a slant at UO since they're a lot about the superheroes. Maybe I read too much into WDW's commercial, but that's the first thing that came to my mind when I saw it. :confused3 I enjoy both parks so it's no big deal to me, but I also enjoy the commercials better when they are about what is special to their park and not so much about their competition.

I thought the same thing about the WDW commercial and the super heroes. I like both places. I don't understand why some feel to be a true lover of WDW you have to hate Universal???? They are 2 different things that just happen to be in the same city. We have 2 parks here fairly close together (BG Williamsburg and Kings Dominion), I appreciate each for different things. I don't have to hate one to love the other.

I haven't seen the commercial, but it does sound funny. I love Disney and have never been to Universal. Am I the only one here that agrees with the little girl? The princess overkill DOES make me want to hurl.

For those of you who haven't been to IOA or USO, imagine what happens when you take a bunch of ex-Disney Imagineers, give them much more freedom and a large budget to create their own theme park (and many new rides at USO), with help from the likes of Steven Spielberg...that's what you have.

Universal's improvement was a direct result of Disney's cutbacks

First off, I'd like to say that I don't hate Universal. I can't. I've never been there. But I personally don't see myself ever visiting there, as it doesn't look like it would hold my interest, and I find their ad campaign tasteless.

I haven't seen this new commercial, but I've see previous ones ("Sick of Pixie Dust?" I remember yelling at the TV during that one). I found them to be rude. It's as if they can't attract people to their "parks" unless they rip at the competition.

I've never been to Universal, but I've been to Six Flags, which doesn't seem too much different, except that Universal is bigger and has more of a "resort"-like feel to it. Six Flags didn't rip at Disney, they just tried to imitate it. "Westernland"? "Main Street"? Come on!

I wouldn't have any problem with Universal if they didn't focus so much on trying to beat Disney. Their ads should show their rides and talk about their good qualities.

I have also heard that at Universal they have fake attraction posters, kind of a rip off on the ones under Main Street Station. Like "Great Moments With Mr. Farquad". Rude so-called "humor", like that.

In all, stop knocking Disney and focus on yourselves!

UO isn't 'making fun' of WDW. it's a different kind of theme park. if it didn't make you want to go there, you're missing the point of the commercial. UO well knows WDW die-hards are never going to step in their gates. they're marketing towards the people in the 'grey area' of people planning to go to orlando that realize it's not just about Mickey. UO has never tried to face off against WDW. they just want to attract the share of the market that wants bigger thrills. Orlando is the biggest family tourist destination on earth. everyone wants a share of that pie. we have AP's for WDW, UO, SW, and BG because we know they all offer different experiences. it's not 'sour grapes'. UO is reminging you all families want different things on a florida vacation, and they're a very viable option. and kids will stay, dine, and get into the parks for free during this promotion. it's a hilarious commercial. :)

:thumbsup2 Good post Sly!

Universal is really nothing like Six Flags other than they both have some thrill rides. Universal is themed around movies. It has some great shows and some very good restaurants. It has many rides that are not "thrill" rides.

IOA has Suess Land, Jurassic Park, Toon Lagoon, Marvel Super Heros and The Lost Continent. Each area is very unique, with stores, restuarants and rides or shows.

I've heard many people say that there is nothing for children at Universal. That isn't true. When my DD was little, she loved Universal. There are three different children's play areas in the Universal park. At IOA, Suess Land is totally themed for little ones.

And yes, I've been to Six Flags.

I hate all the Universal commericals...my family hates thrill rides and the unimaginatvieness of those parks...we just avoid those parsk completley. We will take the princesses anyday.

I love both US and DIS...US has mucho imagination...have you ever seen shrek!!!

blows anything disney has to offer out of the park!

take another look

both parks have their great points!
I love both and will always visit both

My gf and I really like Disney but we also have a blast at US. Its nice to get away from the sugary disney. Spiderman is by far the coolest ride I have ever been on. I love the theming of Jurassic Park.

Disney is chocolate chip cookies and milk
Universal is burritos and tequila.

Both equally good but for different reasons.

we didnot like this commerical either ds6 saw it and went
then dont go to disney
mickey doesnt wanna see you either
i was like what LOL !! :lmao: :lmao:

I don't get some people. Disney and Universal are both doing fine and will continue to do fine. They are "rivals"...what is wrong with poking a little fun at the Disney image? Happens all the time with sports teams, etc. I'm sure Disney can take it and I don't know why some of you can't.

We took our boys to Disney when they were 3 and 5. Took them to Universal when they were 4 and 6. They loved both. They preferred Universal. It wouldn't bother me or make me happy either way. I have no personal stake in it! I like them both too. They are both fun places.

I can't believe the close-mindedness of some people who have never been to Universal.
