NEW TSA rule: make sure that your electronics are charged before you leave home.

I can't even begin to describe my anger if they take my phone away because the battery died.

As for why I could have an electronic divice with a dead battery:

1. My DH's phone had a bad habit of just powering off randomly. Sometimes it would power back on easily, other times he'd have to remove the battery completely. It's now been fixed, but we did fly when it was like this.

2. DS has an old iphone that doesn't have a service plan, but we let him play with aps. It's ancient and doesn't have a long battery life. If he plays with it in the car on the way to the airport, it very well may drain the battery.

3. In the midst of planning and packing, I decided to throw the ipad in the backpack at the last minute, and simply didn't realize it wasn't charged.

Well now you have to add making sure all your electronics are charged to your to do before flying list. Just as if you have to take liquids out of your purse and put them in a baggie.

Knowing the rule ahead of time, the only person to be mad at for having an uncharged electronic is yourself. And that goes for all of us.

And that would be my point...but stated better!

Stuff breaks. Some stuff is worth repairing. If the repair can not reasonably be accomplished on the trip, people plan to bring it home for repair. Surely most of us have had that experience, not necessarily while on a trip, with an expensive piece of electronic equipment.

For years, the security people have claimed they can detect explosives. Suddenly the IED makers have figured out how to make non-detectable explosives? That defies credibility.

I don't sit and worry about their credibility every time they ask us as passengers to follow a new security measure. I want to fly, so I do what I'm told. The minute they do something that offends me, I won't fly. Simple.

If something breaks, I would pack it in my checked bag. Or mail it home if I was worried about it getting stolen.

As to mine, data use sucks the battery dry like nobody's business; last week I drained it from a full charge in 15 minutes, just getting directions to the rental car return from Google Maps.
Using GPS on a phone does put a lot of load on the battery. DH always brings a car charger along when we travel so he can plug in his phone when using it for navigation, just as he does at home.

Having said that, 15 minutes from fully charged to discharged sounds on the short side. How old is your phone? It might be time to replace the battery. I tend to keep my electronics (phones, laptops) for so long that the battery no longer holds much of a charge and I have to replace it at some point.

Just believe, take them at their word and follow what you're told. Sounds familiar . . .

And being angry about it, and arguing would do what exactly????

They offer a service. I can choose to spend my money on it or not, following the rules they have in place. Seems pretty cut and dried, no matter what service that refers to.

Seriously? I'm a child of the 60's...I get the whole 'us against them' mentality. I get the whole govt sucks thing...I truly do. I took part in all that fun back then. Now, the older, wiser, more mellow me says 'who cares if I have to have my phone and iPad charged'. It's just not a big deal. Not to mention that not everyone is going to have that issue....a small percentage! Can you imagine how long it would take if every passenger had to stop, turn on all electronics and then be allowed to pass thru? Just isn't going to happen.
But you just keep believing in your conspiracy theory..or whatever the heck it is. I'll wait to get perturbed when something really inconvenient happens. Doesn't make me a sheep or a cow or stupid or naive...just makes me smart. Go with the flow dude!!

Isn't this for flights originating in Europe? I don't think it applies (yet) to domestic flights around the U.S.

It doesn't apply to domestic flights (yet).

At most airports, tablets no longer need to be taken out of your carry ons, only laptops and your 311 bag.

Oh please...don't bother us with logic and fact!!!!:rolleyes2:rotfl2:

Yes, this is for flights originating overseas, into the US..right now. Some feel that it's only a matter of time before we see this for domestic flights as well. Could be so....don't know, don't care. My electronics are charged.

It won't apply to every one? Wouldn't that be one gaping hole in security?

I guess if one will put up with "anything for security," nothing is "really inconvenient."

I can't imagine that they will stop every single person with electronics...not unless they hire a lot of new people! Just isn't feasible. I imagine it would be an 'every few people' or every 15 or whatever.
I don't have a 'anything for security' mentality. I just prefer to choose my battles. My time in security is not that long....if I have to sometimes take off my shoes and belt. Lately, I've been lucky enough to get a preferred boarding pass, that allows me to keep those things on, just breeze through. And yes, it's nice. But I really don't want the TSA to start allowing everyone to do that. Those of us who fly a lot, aren't on any 'list'. those that don't fly often are probably going to have to go through more extensive security...shoes off, belts off, etc. Big deal. For most of us, it's no issue. However some, like you, seem to think it's a big ole slippery slope where our rights are being shaved away. This is America...we can have different beliefs. But we don't get to belittle other's beliefs because they are different than ours. Just saying.

Earlier in this thread I posted this link to an article from the LA Times reporting that the policy will be extended to some passengers on domestic flights: http://www.latimes.com/business/tra...sures-domestic-passengers-20140709-story.html. Quoting from that article: "the new security measure won't be imposed on every traveler but will primarily target passengers on a federal terrorism 'watch list.'"

Haha well mine are always charged too! I don't like flying with electronics that aren't charged.

I can see this can be a problem for my kindle and nook. Those batteries just don't last and take forever to charge.

The kindle shouldn't have a problem like that. You're making sure to put it in airplane mode whenever you're not actively using the connection, yes? If not, do that. Especially while charging.

The problem is half me. I set it down intending to pick it back up but life doesn't work that way. So it sits there on but unused and the battery runs out within a day.

However, it usually takes overnight to fully charge and that isn't me. I picked it up dead the morning we had to leave and kept checking it. It was taking forever to charge. I finally had to pack it at 50%

Today I have been through security at FCO, MUC and ORD and was not asked to turn on my iPhone or iPad at any of these airports.

Assuming MUC was your flight to the US, not surprising. Angela isn't likely to play the lapdog after we bugged her phone. ;)
