I see varying #s of points, usually for about $10 each, to stay at DVC resorts. How do I know how many points covers a night? We are looking far into the future, Oct. '07, likely for 8 nights, but could depend on when we can get the best flight costs. Am currently looking at Port Orleans Riverside for $1385 for 5 for 8 nights, AAA may better that rate. How would a DVC compare, costwise? And how far in advance can this be done?

You can definately use the charts to plot out how much it would cost per night. One thing to remember is that it is difficult to compare POR and the DVC resort. Also consider that with 5 people, you technically would have to get a 2BR unit unless one of those 5 would be staying in the pack-n-play crib that is provided in the room (I think it's under 3, but not certain). Otherwise you could get a studio or 1BR.

Another thing to realize is that staying at DVC over Friday and Saturday night is rather costly, so some people will move to a different resort for the weekends to save points/money. Here's a quick breakdown of what it would cost assuming you were going 10/7/2007 thru 10/14/07 at OKW (the cheapest route):

Studio: 82 points
1BR: 172 points
2BR: 232 points

Just cutting out the weekends and staying at DVC from 10/7 - 10/12/07 and the points would be:
Studio: 40 points
1BR: 90 points
2BR: 120 points

So, based on your original plan to stay at POR, if you are just looking to save some money by renting points it might not work out for you. The only way you would save anything would be to book a studio, which would be around 82points (minimum), but there could be an issue since the studios have a max occupancy of 4.
