New to the wheelchair scenario

Hi All,

DH recently had a stroke and will be in a wheelchair when we visit in three weeks. We are only coming for a day to MK. I was reading some of the threads about ride accessability and just want to be clear, so I know what Im doing. He can already walk a few steps, so I expect he will be able to walk short distances when we are there (he is only 41, so he is progressing extremely well). So my question is, it seems that all rides are accessible, will we use the normal entrance on all the rides and wait in the regular line? I don't want to create any faux paux. I will more than likely push him in the chair through the line, then leave the chair while on the ride, how will I retrieve it if the ride ends in a different spot? Also, I think I remember splash mountain having a lot of steps in the line, is there a different way around this?

And lastly, what is the better way of getting into MK in the morning from the lot, monorail or boat?

Thanks!

Hi and :welcome: to disABILITIES!

Most of the lines are accessible and you wil use the regular line. If the line is not accessible you will be diverted, either at the start or at a certain point, to the accessible entrance. The CMs will handle transferring the chair from load to unload if he does not take the chair onto the ride and load and unload are at different locations.

And with a manual chair I would definitely recommend the ferry instead of the monorail as the monorail ramps, at both TTC and MK are very steep.

Thanks for your response. Good point about the monorail/boat scenario!

Most lines at MK are accessible, and those that are not will have a CM directing you where to go (i.e. around the stairs at Splash).

You can have all moving walkways slowed or stopped to help with boarding except Peter Pan and the TTA.

You will likely want to skip the stretching room at the haunted mansion, as that is NOT wc accessible. He would have to walk and stand for 5-10 minutes in a dark room in a mob. to use the wheelchair, they will pull you out of hte main line right before going in the main doors and bring you to the exit, where they can bring the chair right up next to the ride car.

I suggest staying in the chair as much as possible, especially when getting in and out of boats. You can use the accessible boat on Small World and Jungle Cruise, so he can roll right on. With balance problems, those boats can be really hard (trust me, I almost took a header out of the log at Splash Mountain last time).

Check out the FAQs for more info :)
