OK, I have read so much about pin trading and how much fun it can be. SOOOO, can someone tell me what I need to get started and how this procedure works?
HI and Welcome!
If you haven't already, check out Dizpins.com and Dizneypins.com.
They are chock full of info for pin trading/collecting!
Are you most interested in trading at the parks with Guests or CM or trading online?
First, you might want to get some pins before you go to WDW to use as CM lanyard traders. The Disney Store pins are great lanyard traders, and you can also find some deals at cheappins.com. Also, keep an eye on eBay. Sometimes people will have lots of pins that will work out to a fairly cheap per pin price.
Second, ask questions on internet message boards like here on the DIS. Pin traders are always happy to help out newbies to our hobby.
Third, when you're at WDW, definitely check out Scoop's seminar at Expo Hall in the Magic Kingdom and the Friday night pin meets at the Contemporary. Scoop gives a fantastic talk on pin making and pin trading etiquette daily at 1 PM Sunday through Thursday (unless it's changed; if it has, someone please correct me). The Contemporary meets start at 7 and officially end at 10 but I understand it goes on and on. It's a great trading environment with plenty of helpful and experienced pin traders (and Ed).
Fourth, this is most important. Have fun and make friends.
There are also pin trading seminars at Epcot each day. In May when my DW and I were there they were at 1, 3 and 6 (I believe). They were not long -- maybe 30 - 45 mins. -- and they covered the basics of pin trading. They were located by the Pin Central Station behind Spaceship Earth.
One warning: pin trading is very ADDICTIVE! Having said that, when you start, look over the pins available and think about what you want to collect (keep) and what you want to trade.
I keep only the pins I am willing to trade on my lanyard. Pins I want to keep I put in a book. It's tempting to wear pins on your lanyard you want to display, but others assume those are for trading, too. I learned that lesson the hard way.
Like Obi said, HAVE FUN! (But keep one eye on your wallet!
