New to DVC...need some help

We bought into DVC when we went to Disney March 2011, we were so excited now we are trying to plan our first trip to Disney as DVC members ...we want to go the week of December 16, 2012, do we need to request it on January 2012? Also we want to make sure we have enough points to cover our trip, when we bought into DVC we were able to bank 2010's points but I think if we don't use them before September 2012, we will lose them...so do we need to go ahead a bank 2011's points? This can be so confusing...I have read alot of post on here and they have helped alot but we want to make sure that we do this right...we also want to get like a 2BR as our family is planning on going with us as well

I believe I have this correct, but I could be wrong. So it sounds like you have an October use year. Your 2010 points were good from October 2010-September 30th 2011, but you banked them to your 2011 year which would run from October 1st 2011 - September 30th 2012.

Your December 2012 trip would fall into your 2012 use year (October 1st 2012 - September 30th 2013) which means you will lose your 2010 points if you do not use them by September 30th 2012.. You will have to bank your 2011 points to your 2012 use year and then you can book the trip at your home resort in January of 2012.

*** Update: You can bank the points you'll need when you make your reservation. The banking deadling should be 4 months before your use year ends, which I think is the end of May?

11 months out at your home resort, 7 months out for any other resort.

December is a very busy time for member services. Expect long wait times when calling in January, for December reservations.

You're confusion is confusing me! Let me recap to make sure I have it right. First of all, if you have a September use year and they banked your 2010 points into 2011, then you will have 2010 points that must be used BEFORE August 31, 2012. Those 2010 points will not enter into the equation for your December 2012 trip. They will be gone. They expire on the last day of your 2011 use year, which is August 31, 2012. Your 2011 points can be banked into 2012, and you will need to do that when you call to book your December trip in January. Just don't rely on those 2010 points when you make that reservation. You will only be able to use banked 2011 points and current 2012 points for your December 2012 trip with an October use year.
