New to DL - where do I start?

We're seasoned WDW visitors, but we are thinking of heading west for the first time this summer. Where do I start?!

My girls will be 10 and turning 7 on this trip. We will spend a few days at DL and then explore the area, likely changing hotels. I don't know anything about CA, so I have some research to do!

There is a sticky thread for WDW veterans. It is very interesting (and I have never been to WDW). I would recommend staying at one of the motels across the street. Best Western Park Place Inn, Park Vue Inn, The Tropicana. Also, take your time and have a relaxing vacation!
