new to digital scrapping and using clipart

Ok, so i want to jump on the bandwagon. I have alot of clip art saved and would like to know how i can insert clip art to my digital without the white back ground of the image. see my sig-if i want to include characters without the white borders. Is this even possible. I will need a dummies explanation please

I use PSPX and use the background eraser tool, and I just click on the background and poof it goes away! Not sure of the steps in other programs. If it's a technique that is hard to do in your program, remember to save it as a .png when you are done... only .png's will save the transparency, if you save as a .gif or .jpg it will get a white background again.
