My husband has decided that he wants to take me on vacation to celebrate in Dec. my getting my master's degreee. I checked the disney vacations and not much is left in Dec. and Nov. So it looks like maybe either a 4 or a 3 day cruise. There also was one 7 day cruise left.

No one in my family has been on a cruise before. I have two kids that are 5 and 8. Would the 3 or 4 day cruise be better? or Should I just take the kids out of school and go with the 7 day. Money is not really an object. I just want the best experience for my family and having never done this before, I decided to try and see what the experts around here have to say

Congratulations on your academic achievement...

I am sure many others on this board agree with me that a Disney cruise is the ultimate family vacation...

That said, I would recommend a 4-day itinerary as your first foray into Disney cruising...as you can tell from the posts, many of us are multiple cruisers....IMO the 4 day is a good trial to see if cruising is really for you without as much of the time and cost commitment....You can always add 3 days at the parks...

Please note that if you go on the 4-day, it embarks on a Sunday, so chances are you will have to take your children out of school anyway...that is unless you sail peak summer months or holidays-we've always taken our DS (darling/Disney son) out of school and saved thousands....kids are pretty resilient....especially smart ones (LOL)... some folks on this board wouldnt dream of taking their kids out of school for...perish the thought...a Disney Cruise...

Thanks for the quick reply. We were wondering if the 4 day would be the best option. I don't care about taking the kids out of school. Depending on how many degrees you get, this is a milestone that doesn't happen often.

Is the 4 day to short? DO you get to really experience the ship, and what room category would be best?

We chose a four day for our first cruise as well. We will be going back for the seven day - but the four day was very nice and a good "introduction" to cruising. If you turn out to not enjoy cruising, seven would be awfully long. You do get to experience the ship - it doesn't take but a day or two before you are settled in.

I would think three would be too short - unless that is what you need for your schedule.

We chose a category 6 with a veranda. A very nice room. Since money is no object, I'd opt for a room with a veranda - more expensive, but a nice spot to sit out and enjoy the ocean. Cat 4 and 5 have a little more room to them than the six...but the six was fine for the four of us.

Congrats. I just registered for classes today (finally bothering to get a BA after a 15 year "break").

4 day is perfect for first timers...allows you to visit each rotation restaurant, as well as Palo, have 2 great days at sea, and really enjoy all that the ship has to offer...

a 3-day IMO is just too short, especially since you will be traveling from TX....The 7-day is really the ultimate, but is a big commitment for someone who has never tried cruising....

I agree with above poster...if $ no object, opt for cat 6 or cat 5 verandah stateroom (same amenities, different decks)...

Also, I recommend the DCL planning DVD...just awesome...everything you need to know...

Sheree',

My family and I have never been on a cruise before, but I've been dreaming about Disney's cruise for two years, and knew the 4 day would just be too short for us.

From your signature it looks like you guys are Disney veterans and already like the Disney "product"; take a look around these boards and other info sites, and if it looks good - go for the 7!!! :Pinkbounc

We going in Nov on 7 day eastern, taking the kids out of school, and I don't believe we'll ever regret it!!!

Happy Planning!!!:wave2:

(p.s. oh, if you are like me, you may just go and get a couple more of those degrees; gotta love being a student! :yo-yo: )

I will add my vote for the 4 day. I am certain you will love it and wish you had booked a 7 day, but since you are new cruising it would be best to try the shorter cruise first.

Congrats!:D

Thanks a lot for all of your replies. They are really helpful in making our decision.

I do have a couple of more questions. Do they sell pins on the ships? How are the activities for the children? Do you need formal wear on the 4 day cruise?

yes, they sell pins.

take a look at the navigators posted at www.dcltribute.com. they have navigators (ie, daily itineraries) for all the disney cruise options, including the kids' navigators. Tells you what activities are usually offered:sunny:

Hi sm4987,

Congrats on the degree, excellent achievement.

We are booked on our fourth cruise, as you can see we're getting closer to the departure date and now I practically live on the boards.

Our first ever cruise experience was also on the 4 night cruise on the Wonder. While it is truly an excellent introduction, it went by too fast. We very quickly fell in love with the whole experience and wished we had a longer trip. As someone pointed out, you are already familiar with the Disney product, so you know the calibur of service and experience to expect. It is awesome. I would go for it and do the seven night. Since it takes a couple of days to get aclimated and comfortable with the ship's routine, you can really enjoy the extra three days.

We have three children and our youngest was 4 when we did our first trip. He loved it, big time! We think the kids programing is great, and while mine don't spend every waking hour in the clubs, they have totally enjoyed everything they did. The programs are well run, varied and just great.

They do sell pins on the ship. The cruise is where I got hooked on collecting. I got my first pin as a castaway club member, then a birthday pin when we went on our first 7 night cruise to celebrate my 40th. Since then, I've collected a few, many from the ship, which are exlusive to the ships.

I don't believe there is any type of formal night on the Wonder. You can get dressed up for dinner in Tritons and or Palo's but it's not full blown formal. While it is perfectly acceptable for people to not don formal attire on the Magic, it is a lot of fun when you do. We've gotten all dressed up, tuxes and gowns for the formal and semi-formal nights on the Magic. It's kind of like being in a classic movie.

We have also not had any problem taking our kids out of school, as evidenced by the fact all of our trips are during the school year. It's cheaper, less croweded and cooler. February has been our month of choice most years, so it is great to get away from the cold weather. My kids know they have to maintain at least a B in all of their core subjects if we are to justify taking them out for a week. So far they have done that. We also think the experience is far more educational than some of their time in class. We've even followed suggestions from the boards and taken special assignments with us. Our middle son was given a world map by his social studies teacher and asked to see how many countries he could meet people from. I think he ended up with 35! We also visited the Myan ruins. So they got to see and touch something they study about.

Ultimately we figure their time with us as kids is very short and passing by quickly. The memories we build on these very special trips are more important than a few hours of classroom time.

Good luck with your planning. Obviously you'll get lots of help from here!:earsboy:

We especially like the DCL themed pins...they are ultra exclusive and rare, especially limited edition and Artist Choice....Other than Ebay, virtually the only place on Earth to buy these pins are on the Magic and Wonder....

you all are great!!! Thanks for all the information and the well wishes. As soon as DH is free, I'm gonna let him read all the wonderful advice you all have given to me.

My children are really into the pins right now. They are trying to be good and do extra things just to save money to buy more of them:teeth: If we made the cruise during December, I thought a few would make great gifts for them. Hopefully the ship will be decorated a little for Christmas making for some great pictures.

Again thank you all:wave2:

The ships will defenitely be decorated for Christmas. Our first cruise was just before Thanksgiving, and the Wonder was already decked out, and it was beautiful! Awesome pictures for sure.

Just had to add my thoughts to the whole...3,4 or 7 day choice...We have never cruised before....but when we were looking into doing this trip...we went over the same questions.....which to pick..and we decided on the 7 day....because..we felt the 3 and 4 day would go way to fast. And if like you stated...money is no problem I'd go for the 7 day...and a verhanda cabin....What's not to like about crusing. From the sounds of it...kids programs are fun..and it sounds like there are a lot of activities..(less for older children though).

Good luck with your pick...and congrats on your degree. :teeth:

Thanks a lot all. We are looking at both the 7 day and the 4 day now for December. I don't care abot taking the kids out of school, hey it's Disney:teeth: . Plus I have some Annual Passes burning a whole in my purse screaming to get back.

Congratulations on your achievement. Hard work pays off.

About the cruise. My vote is for the 7 day. You can leave early evening on Friday, fly in to MCO, do the cruise and the day you get back and most of Sunday at the parks and return on Sunday evening and start the week exhausted after a MAGICAL time.

Your kids are the perfect ages for the kids clubs. The counselors are absolutely great (I should know since one of them is my DD). I would second the idea of checking out the Navigators at dcltribute. Make the trip a little educational and enjoy. The ships will both be decorated for Christmas and you will be able to get wonderful pictures.

If money isn't a problem, I'd choose the 7 night and a verandah cabin is it's available. Whatever you decide, have a great time.
