New survey .. proposal .. Tiered Ticket Prices

My husband works in Marketing and I am constantly disappointed as he points out the lack of actual "news" much of the time. Many, many stories, especially about corporations (except when it's a scandal!) it's actually PR written by the company and provided to the news outlets. It may not be the case here, but in the case of such widespread coverage about a not-yet-a-story, I wonder if it's Disney PR and if so, what's the motive behind releasing this particular info? Just to gauge reaction?

As soon as I saw it hit those national outlets, I thought it was planted. Why would Disney plant such a thing if they were really just quietly testing the waters? The fact that it hit those national outlets as fast as it did tells me this is not just a pie in the sky concept.

You know what's futile and unproductive? Being flippant, dismissive and outright rude of thoughts and opinions you disagree with (I'm looking at that tilting at windmills comment). If the very discussion bothers you so much, then don't engage in it. The rest of us will continue to ponder, speculate (for better or for worse), and discuss here on this discussion board.

Yep. As soon I saw it hit the news, I figured that this will hit with the next ticket price increase.

I just shelled out $409 for a five day park hopper pass. Bad enough they got rid of no expiration tickets. I can say that amount made me think a bit. If it goes much higher than that (I don't mean the normal incremental increases, but something like this "tiered" pricing) I will be going much less and definitely in the quiet times.

Someone may have already mentioned this, but the waterpark tickets are tiered now by time of year.

There have been multiple articles in the national media as well..time and the LA Times ar two I cab remember off the top of my head that had articles about this.
True, but as they're all responding to the same news of the same survey, there's no "it" for them, either.

Yes but the prediction I'm referring to was that FP+ was just the precursor to all reserved attractions. Since DL doesn't even have FP+, obviously that was wrong. And we can say "not yet" about a million things.

Disneyland IS getting FP+. It has been announced and is in the works. They have announced it for DLHK, too.

Indeed they are- which is kind of funny too since just a few weeks ago many on these boards were sure it wouldn't when the only thing to go on for that was a report that DL would not get the MB's.

This is no surprise. I imagine they feel pretty confident now and are expanding. I think a lot of people, including me, never thought fp+ was ever going to be exclusive to WDW.

eta- Assuming of course the unofficial reports are accurate.

do you have a link to Disney announcing this for dlr? All I have seen is a rumor on a blog post that isn't substantiated anywhere else . Nothing confirmed from Disney.

That's all I've seen as well- from a couple of sites, but no official word from Disney that I could find.

FTR, a Disneyland VP has said in an LA Times article that magic bands are not coming to DLR. This article came out after the discussions you are referencing here.

As I said in those discussions, I am. skeptical about what that means for fp+ as MBs arent required to use the technology. That said, if I'm taking a wait and see approach on a new pricing structure that came out of a survey from Disney itself, I am definitely taking a wait and see approach on unsubstantiated rumors.

Not sure how you know the discussion I'm referencing but....

Different discussion apparently. The one I'm referencing was a discussion of that article - using it as proof that there would be no MB's. Many people, including me, pointed out that no mb did not mean no FP+.

I was posting in and reading discussions on the dlr board that I recall you participating in as well. They were about the "no MBs at DLR" statements. I'm assuming those discussions are what you are referring to, as I haven't actually seen it talked about on the wdw boards. If I'm wrong, I apologize. At the time of those discussions I read on the dlr board, the no MB information was coming from the fast company article. I was simply adding by saying that has been further confirmed in the la times article. (There are also threads discussing the la times article on the dlr boards that I also participated in). I wasn't arguing with you, just adding more info for those who may not have heard that here on the wdw side of things. :confused3

I also said in those discussions, and here today, that I agreed that no MBs didn't mean no fp+. So, again, we are apparently in agreement.

Eta: since we have a dlr trip planned for this fall, I've been on the dlr boards quite a lot. The fp+ rumor would affect our trip if it were to.come to fruition, so I've been reading all the information I can.

I think this was planted. Nothing nefarious. But it spread very quickly. I think it was to get people used to the idea. My guess is that this is already a done deal, maybe the details still to be worked out.

Same strategy used for FP+. A flurry of news stories, features, and hype and then months of absolutely NO information at all. You know they have decided to move this direction, they must use the reaction of the public to see how to best navigate the waters.

I'm still most interested to see how their software works! Disney's track record is not very good.

Thing is, there's really no "it" yet to truly discuss.
The inferences being drawn from survey questions to future plans don't follow. Very often to glean information about "yyy", you ask questions that sound like "xxx". That doesn't mean you're planning, or even considering, doing "xxx".

Did you see the article from the Sentinal that I posted from 2012? This has been discussed in the Theme Park world for about 3 years now. Not really a secret. The model has be referred to as airline pricing. That doesn't take a lot of speculation...

It is pretty easy to see all the moves from the past few years have been leading this direction.

The force driving all this is...Finding ways to absorb crowds without building a lot of new attractions or a 5th gate.

Disney desperately needs more attractions to make all this work, but they still seem to be going about that in a weird way:
  • Replacing Maelstrom with Frozen ride - net gain zero
  • Taking 6 years to build Pandora ?????????? Nuts
  • Taking away Parades
  • Adding Playgrounds at DHS?
  • Adding capacity to TSMM and Soarin should help I guess - but not new locations - this doesn't help FP options
  • Building more interactive queues
This grand plan has been in works since 2011 (that we know of), and in that time period we have a net gain of zero rides in Epcot, DHS, and DAK.
