The new stimulus finally does not ignore college age kids that are still dependent on parents tax returns and will award money for them. Will you keep this yourself or give it to your kids? I only know this because my kid informed me and asked where her money was. 🤣. I most likely will give mine to each kid, though I have not told them that yet. They definitely missed out on income last year.

I pay for my son's college so if we get it, it will go towards his next semester.....

Already given my 21 year old his! And he has already spent it on a new scope.

No, mine wouldn't even think to ask. She knows all stimulus goes to family needs, and this one went to our doors (which will help her since her hangout room is our daylight basement, which happens to be one of the doors getting replaced)...

It came to me because DD is a dependent on my taxes, and I pay for the vast majority of her expenses. It is a (advance) tax refund, so unless she's going to start paying half of my taxes, that refund goes to me.

But that said, my last one went 100% to the local food bank. Haven't completely figured out where this one is going yet, but probably someplace similar.

DD has gotten some checks from her college - they've been passing through a lot of the stimulus they receive to the students (don't know if that is standard for all schools or not). Those have gone to her college account for now, in case something happens and she needs extra years or wants to go for an advanced degree or a second degree. She protested that somewhat, but also gets the logic of it - she got it because she's in school, all costs paid for from her college fund that I 100% funded. And she is living at home, safe and warm and comfortable and well fed, with no bills to pay and that will continue as long as she needs - I know that's not true of all students (many at her school are struggling) but it is for her. Whatever is left in her account when she graduates and decides she is done with school I am going to split 50-50 with her. So in a way, she may get half of that back, just down the road. My 50% will probably really just get moved to a wedding fund.

My DD is a high school senior. She tried asking for it lol, I let her know it was going straight to her college fund. So yes, she will benefit from it, but I know better then to hand over $1400 to my 18 year old. (note I said mine, ymmv, but mine would have it spent at Ulta in a day lol)

Mine are 22 and 19. Both in college. Though we pay for mist things. They both pay fir some things in their own. I dont want them to work during the school year and just concentrate on classes. They have worked 2-3 summer jobs since they were 15. I will be giving them each the $1400. DS will be using his towards his car payments and DD will put towards college expenses.

DD19 pays her rent and groceries so I am transferring her share to her checking account. At the end of April, before she leaves her college town she'll be leaving a check for May-July rent which will take $1200 of it.

There's a similar thread on the Community Board, and it mostly comes down to whether the kid pays many expenses on their own or not, whether the parent is keeping or sharing.

I never even thought to keep DDs. Sadly Dh and I aren't eligible for based on this DD22 must be. She starts grad school in fall so it will be wonderful for her to have for cat care, her food, etc. She works part time while in school and is very appreciative and good with money. I assumed it would go straight to her but based on what is written in this thread maybe it will come to me? I will check my bank statement more closely!

I think (not sure) that if you are not eligible, your DD won't be either. I believe she qualifies based on your income, not hers. Please correct me if I am wrong as I am really not sure.

ETA - unless you don't claim her and she qualifies under her income alone.

Oh geez aww assumed since she files taxes due to job but is still claimed our dependent she would receive but dh thought would be deposited straight to her based on her 2019 back account.

I am really not 100% sure. I tried to google the info to see if my kids would get anything based on what they filed. But I do still claim them and assumed it would go by my tax return. Hope I am wrong.

If you claim them as a dependent, the money (If you fall within the eligibility range) will go into your account, not theirs. If they worked and had to file taxes, but you are claiming them, it will not make a difference. The money will go to you.

My 20 year old doesn’t pay any bills, lives at home and is in college. We pay for everything. So no I’m not giving him “his” money. He did receive stimulus money from his school that is his to keep and goes straight to him.

I’m also not giving my 15 year old “her” money either. When the first stimulus came out she did ask me if I was going to give her the $500 that was for “her.” :rotfl:

I also don’t give them a cut of child support I receive for them. I also don’t give them any part of my tax return even though I get tax credits for them.

My 16-year-old asked for his last time as well. I informed him it paid for his dual enrollment, which we paid after we got the stimulus. :o

My kid was joking....mostly. Lol. Had I said sure she would’ve been online shopping in minutes though. They both get it and understand that it’s not their money. They’ve never made a stink about it or mentioned it much.
