New spin on the Contemporary rumor

The Contemporary would stay filled if they reduced prices to a reasonable rate for a hotel in that condition.

A few years ago we stayed at the Poly in one of the remote buildings. The room had mold on the ceiling and smelled musty and damp. They moved us to another room that had less mold on the ceiling and smelled a little less musty. They also sprayed it with a horrid scent masking spray that hid the moldy smell for a few hours.

My point is that the CR isn't the only resort that has fallen below Disney standards.

We would be thrilled to have DVC at a garden wing at CR. We stayed there, along with Hurricane Charley, last August. Had no issues with the rooms at all. It was a quick walk to MK from our room. Granted we were pretty close to the entry into the wing. But I have to say that the time to get to the monorail at the CR from the North Wing was certainly comparable with the time it took to get to the monorail from Tokelau Longhouse at the Polynesian. And we didn't get as wet at the CR!! I would love it if DVC went in at the CR.

I just can't win. First, my dear home resort - SSR&S - is regularly abused . Now, my fav-o-rite non-DVC Resort - The Polynesian - is maligned. ::sigh::. For the record, the Polynesian has been undergoing serious rehab for the past 2-3 years; haven't heard of any mold complaints from the rehabbed longhouses....

this building was constructed using the modular units - I don't think they can be simply torn down - I think the entire structure would need to go down.

Now, now. It's gonna be OK. I know they rehabbed. They needed to, but the rehab came about 5 years too late.

I still love Poly. It's probably my favorite resort, too. Including DVC resorts.

Just the tower was modular wasn't it?

no the wings were part of the original construction - so they are modular too...

I was there in '73 (a callow youth of 12) and I remember reading all about the construction methods. Each room - Tower and Wing - was built somewhere else, brought on-site, and slid into position (I think I've even seen a picture of a room being driven on a trailer). The plan was that they would be removable for easy renovation; sadly, once all the rooms were in, the structure settled, locking them in place.

There's a good chance the Poly rehab got delayed by 9/11 and the subsequent drop in attendance.

The response: the CR has been having increasing problems with people trying to "game the system" by getting the cheapest room possible at the CR and then insisting at check-in that they had been promised a tower room. The former CM said that they were really/are really having some guest relations problems with the Garden Wing rooms and that the thought is that if they convert one or both garden wings to DVC then the guest relations problems will be greatly alleviated as the guest will clearly understand that their room will be in a "remote" wing.
Wow, that sounds really bad. It's like implying, "Oh I know! Let's give the cheap crappy rooms to DVC members. Then they can't complain about not being in the Tower. That's a perfect fit, since DVC members are so budget anyway." So we get thrown the leftovers that no one else wants?

Anyway, I hope it'd just be the North Wing. Then at least they could justify it by saying you can easily walk to MK. Otherwise, I do agree that the hike to the monorail would be a little far... plus if they don't entirely overhaul the wing, we as DVC members may really feel like second class citizens then. :sad2: The units had better be nice, as I agree w/ the speculation here that the price will very likely be over $100/point.

Thanks, DoctorP for posting this. :wave2:

The humidity also caused the steel supports to rust together.

I guess trying to be an innovator doesn't always pay off... :rotfl2:

No, I think you misunderstood, disneyberry. The way I interpreted the comment was that people wanted to be in the main building for location as much as the quality of the rooms. If they converted a or both garden wings to DVC, I would assume a massive rehab/demolition. The point is that when someone books a DVC villa they will know that they are not in the main building and would neither expect nor necessarily want a regular hotel room in the main building. Now, again, I will believe it when I see it, but it was an interesting perspective.

Actually, I would probably prefer to be in the wings at the CR. It just always seems to me that the monorail roaring through the tower can't be very quiet!!!!

In any event, my guess is that if they did decide to do a DVC there, they'd have to probably tear down those buildings and build new, to be able to include all the ameniites that a DVC resort has. I do like the idea of the moving sidewalk...that would be a fun addition!!!!

I'd like to see them change the "theme" of the CR to a "Jules Verne" idea of the future, sort of like they did at the MK. Or do it like "The Jetsons".

We stayed in the tower once and you really can't hear the monorail in the room. Even when in the concourse, like eating at the Concourse Steakhouse it's more of a whoosh when it goes buy, really not a bother at all.

DoctorP, LOL. No, I didn't misunderstand what you wrote. I do realize they would likely renovate the rooms. But I admit, I was being defensive and reading too much into the reasoning of why Disney is considering the Villas at Contemporary Resort. :smooth: Plus Dean's comments on stuff like "rebranding" to a lesser brand got me going.

My point was, the renovation had better be very nice in order to prevent some people from feeling like DVC members got the castoffs, or that the Villas are an "afterthought" (which they would be, heh).

BTW, I would love to see a Jules Verne "steam punk" type of theme. That would be really cool.

I may not have much company in this, but as far as theme goes, I'd like to see them build Polynesian Villas in place of the garden wings!

Why? Because I would really like to see Polynesian Villas built, and for various reasons it is unlikely that will ever happen at the Polynesian Resort location. There is only going to be one monorail DVC built, so this is the only chance.

For me the theming clash with the Tower would be a small price to pay for getting Polynesian Villas built. Of course they would be separated from the Polynesian pools and the GCH, but maybe we could get a small themed pool out of it, and the restaurants in the Tower would help make up for no GCH. The theming of the grounds would be the important thing. I'm hoping for a "home away from home" for us Polynesian fans in DVC.

I would love to hear the monorail going by. :earsboy:

FWIW,

I agree that the garden wings are not convenient to the Monorail. However, if you made a second entrance to the MK (similar to the back entrance to Epcot for BWV & BCV), then you'd really have something. It could easily be a separate entrance for use by folks coming from VWL and/or CR. Something that could put you right into Tomorrowland. It would alleviate some traffic flows through the main entrance and really make a DVC at CR desirable.

I would really like to own at a resort that close to MK.................but I really don't like the 'theme' of the Contemporary. Does anyone know whether they would make the North wing part of the resort with the same 'theme' or whether they would create a resort within a resort with a different theme?!!
Any time scales on this development?!

What has happened to Eagle Pines?

DEbsxx

Eagle Pines will probably still be done.

DI because it has the structure - electrical, water, sewage - already done on it got pushed away and became SSR.

the same would apply to the Cont if it happens.

It think the walking path right now to the MK from the Cont is pretty nice!!!

I would definitely walk in the morning - in the evening take the monrail!

of course if and when it becomes part of DVC.

I don't think the walk is that far to the monrail - both the Polyn and GF have a much further walk from their distance places.

Hey it is the MONRAIL!!!!
