New Security measures going into effect Dec 17, 2015 at WDW

I wonder if they will offer a pre-screen for annual pass holders or DVC members who go frequently, like TSA PRE-SCREEN at the airport? I would pay to bypass the disaster it is going to be getting into the parks when this goes into effect.

With the recent world events and a man recently found in the park with a gun...I am surprised this isn't already in place.

I think this may be something you will be seeing everywhere you go.

Movie theaters, shopping, malls, schools etc....

Was just in NYC this weekend and saw a couple of shows. Each one had a bag check.

Everyone at OIA (at the time we were flying) went through the full body scanner.

The world has changed.

I go to American Hockey League games in Hershey, and they have tightened the security for the games also. Two weekends ago they finally got the walk through metal detectors and it has sped up the process. Before two weeks ago, it was taking people over an hour to get through security (wanding people). It is definitely going smoother than it was the beginning of the month.

The world is definitely a different place, and I guess this will be our new normal.

It'll be a mess at first for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised or too annoyed by this. I know WDW has security that is unmatched (it must be if homeland security goes to them for pointers), but I always wondered how bag checks were enough. Then again I'm sure there have been plenty of instances were people were caught with firearms or taken out of the parks and we weren't told about it.

Reading the actual article makes me wonder if this isn't just "click bait". The story is pretty upfront at saying that these are rumors and that it could start as early as this week. The headline seems designed to get attention. And note that the motto of the Inquisitr site is "News worth sharing".

I don't mind it but wonder if they are still going to be manually checking the bags. That would mean you would have to somehow go through the metal detector without your bag, which would open the floodgates for that bag to get taken. I can't see them installing the rolling bag xrays like airports have, the cost of that would be huge. I'm guessing they could do like the courthouse, have you walk through the detector while someone checks your bag and then hands you your bag and the next person does not go through until you have your bag. Ours are just done on a little table beside the detector, it doesn't roll but there aren't usually more than 5 people in line.

Thanx for the update, Mike.

While 1 part of me is glad they're possibly doing this, and surprised they already have not been much more aggressive with security measures (at least the ones we CAN see!), I also think it's extremely sad our world has come to this! :(

At least the article does cite it's sources

I think it's important to remember that a large part of security measures are psychological. Seeing that you need to pass body scanners or metal detectors would be enough to deter most people from trying to bring a weapon into the parks, but it's the keen eye of a trained security officer that usually identifies even a small weapon, as was the case with the lawyer from Miami. I nearly always leave my bags at home/hotel and stuff my cargo pants pocket to avoid the lines for bag check. I have never been stopped or checked, and I am certain I would have been able to sneak a weapon into a park or DS.

I believe it was Pete that mentioned the officers in body armor with automatic rifles after the Paris attacks and around airports after 9/11. It made everyone feel more secure, but also puts everyone on edge and more alert. The bag checks and local sheriffs deputies on hand did that to a degree, this is the next step. That being said, Disney world is more than 4 theme parks, and no security measure is 100%. Any soft target will have the potential to be a target for violence or terrorist acts, so the key thing is for everyone to stay vigilant and report anything they may see.

The bubble of Disney has grown thinner, but I prefer that to the alternative of constantly looking over my shoulder. Now all I need to focus on is being run over by strollers and scooters or being trapped on Small World for 2 hours.

That was one of my thoughts as well. Could it happen? Perhaps. I guess we will find out tomorrow.

Intercot broke this story before Inquisitr. I've heard other rumblings from other sources that this is indeed happening and it's happening on both coasts.

The Orlando Sentinel has also picked up the story today.

What caught me about the Orlando Sentinel article was that those guests over 14 won't be able to wear costumes...even at Halloween parties. I am wondering how this will go over.

So is this just gonna be temporary for the movie premier/holiday crowds?

I hope it's not that 3D full-body scan like they have at some airports. One time I was selected for that, and as I stood there being scanned by that thing, I just kept apologizing to the TSA agents for what they were seeing.
