New scam with returns

Granted it's been over 10 years since I worked there, but the standard procedure was to refund to the original form of payment (as long as you had a receipt, or if it was charged to the Macy's credit card we could pull it up with the card).
Macy's always tries to keep the sale and push me into a gift card that shows up in the mail weeks and weeks later when I think the return went to my card, they never ask permission because I despise how they handle the gift cards and would always refuse if asked. With them, the whole gift card thing is terrible because there is no accounting of them whatsoever, as in there is no email that shows up or spot in the website which identifies the gift card as linked to a transaction or return, they don't even have an accounting of gift cards linked to my credit card and outstanding, which would force accountability.

I really should have been more forceful with my skepticism of the person at the register, now I know.

kept the other for themselves since Macy's avoids putting return money back on the card and routinely creates gift cards without asking
I'm a bit confused on the details. If someone is always getting a gift card it usually leads me to believe it's either because that's what they qualify for based on the return policy of the store or it's the method of payment used to purchase the item, whatever the store has for their certificates (like Khol's Cash for example), etc. It would not be normal practice to push a gift card onto a customer when they qualify for something else.

Are you using your Macy's credit card to make these purchases? A combination of credit card, gift card, cash, Macy's certificates, etc?

These were items you purchased on Macy's website correct? If so what do you bring with you to return to reflect you purchased those items?

Before I unload a bunch of information from Macy's website it would be helpful to know the above.

It is weird.

I usually buy with ny card for points and then return expecting the refund to go back to my card like every other business out there does. However, maybe about 4 years ago Macy's started to just create and send me gift cards instead of putting the money back to my card. I suspect this is to inflate sales numbers, if they refund the sale is gone but if they send a card instead that sale to the store probably stands, it's likely tricky accounting.

I always make Amazon returns at Whole foods, I make so many returns, the lady and I know each other. But you're right, whole foods never gives you an Amazon receipt. But you can look on your Amazon app and tell right away that your return is in progress.

With Amazon I always initiate the return online, then depending on where it has me return to send (which I always select free) I get a QR code. They scan the code and that's that. I get a refund whenever Amazon tracks it as being in their warehouse again. However with Khol's and UPS (the two places I've returned them to) I always get a shipping label receipt. That prints automatically at Khols IME and with UPS they asked me both times if I wanted a receipt and I told them yes.

I track the progress of return but at least I get a shipping receipt showing when I shipped the item back to Amazon.

I wish I had known ahead of time that Amazon/WF returns are processed by email (or app.) I don't like to have extra apps on my phone that I usually don't use. I would have downloaded it ahead of time, to make sure the transaction went through.

Same for email. I use a different email account for my online purchases, so that all the sales emails aren't spamming my other account. Half the time, I don't remember the newer passwords that accounts sometimes make us change to. So, I was standing there trying out a couple passwords before I remembered the right one. Gmail will lock the account if it senses the password tries are coming from a phone it doesn't recognise. I would have set my phone up via my home wifi (which Gmail recognizes,) before I left home if I knew I had to access that account and try out different passwords.

I had that happen at Macy's too. I HATE shopping and having to return things there. The sales clerks at Macy's, especially their NYC 34th St flagship store are NASTY pieces of (bleep.) One tried to push a gift card on me when I paid cash. I had to demand to see a manager before she processed my CASH back. So there never was a real reason to push a gift card on me a gift card. Another asked to see my physical Macy's charge card, NOT because she needed to swipe it, but she wanted to look at it to indicate I didn't have one of their premiere level charge cards or whatever and that I was returning the items because I couldn't AFFORD them.

Another time, the clerk was making comments like I was a costume shopper for film production, where the shopper usually buys extra items for the star to try on and only keeps what the production actually uses, and returns the rest. Not that I could afford the items and just didn't like what I had ordered online. I played so dumb, acting like I didn't understand what she was inferring, she was ANNOYED her insult couldn't land. :rotfl:

This is really weird. I posted the above at 6:00pm ET and I received THIS ⬇️ in my email at 6:04pm from Amazon. Amazon never sends me emails, except confirmations when I order stuff. The timing and the subject matter is a little too coincidental for me. :rolleyes1 Maybe I should post how I'd really love a discount or gift card from Amazon. ;)
