I just got this email. I have 5 different upcoming resort reservations (yes, I have a problem), so I don't know to which resort it is referring. I looked at MDE and all of them still list the normal room designation that matches what I booked. I wonder what they are planning on changing. Has anyone heard anything about this?

Dear Guest,

We wanted to let you know that we are making some changes to our resort room type names in order to make it simpler for you to choose the room you want in the future. Please note that your plans in My Disney Experience may now show your upcoming resort room type has been renamed, however you will still receive the exact room type you originally booked. There is no additional action required prior to your arrival.

We look forward to welcoming you on your upcoming visit and wish you a magical stay!
Sincerely,
Disney Destinations, LLC

On another forum, they are posting that "pool view" rooms at AKL will now be called "water view". AKL rooms with a king bed will now be a separate booking category and no longer just a request. These are the only two changes being reporting currently.

Curious, what are your 5 resorts?
Port Orleans Riverside (Royal Room, standard view), Contemporary (Garden wing, standard view), Yacht Club (standard view), AKV - Jambo (1 bedroom value), BWV (Deluxe studio- garden or pool)

Did you look at your resort reservations in MDE? Did the room names change on any of them?
I did and they didn't. I'll update if any of them do!

I heard about this on a podcast on Friday but haven't seen anything about it at all. Am curious because I figure if the Poly is part of this we should be getting an email given we're booked Pool/Marina view in a couple of weeks.

I know reasonable minds may differ but I don't really care for a pool view (too noisy!) However, I love a water view. To me they're not really comparable or worth the same amount of $$$ and lumping them together is a big UGH. You cannot see the Electrical Water Pageant from a pool, for one!

I stayed at Pop recently and put in a room request for one overlooking Hourglass Lake. We got "upgraded" to a pool view and the room assigner was SO CONFUSED as to why I was asking for a "downgrade" when the front desk called to see if we could switch rooms.

It might be the same. I know BC/YC only have maybe 10 rooms for standard view (parking lot). The rest are garden/woods or water view. I'm hoping they don't lump the standard and garden together and I get stuck with a parking lot view!
We have a split stay in 2 weeks. Our YC reservation still says Garden/Woods and our Poly one still says Pool/Marina. Looking at further dates on the website YC seems to still have Garden/Woods as a separate category from Resort View.

There was a small write up this morning on WDW Magic….

Disney simplifies room naming categories at Walt Disney World resort hotels

Disney is renaming its resort hotel categories at Walt Disney World to provide a more straightforward description of the various room options.

In most cases, Walt Disney World deluxe hotels will now offer three categories of rooms - resort view, water view, and theme park view.

Existing room categories include lagoon view, pool view, marina view, standard view, and more.

Port Orleans Riverside (Royal Room, standard view), Contemporary (Garden wing, standard view), Yacht Club (standard view), AKV - Jambo (1 bedroom value), BWV (Deluxe studio- garden or pool)
It could actually be either your Contemporary or Yacht Club reservation. All Deluxe Resort (just Deluxe, at least for now) guest rooms now have three categories: Resort View, Water View, and Theme Park View. Resort View will now cover any rooms that were previously in non-water view rooms: Standard View, Garden View, etc. Water View will be any view with any type of water: Lake, Pool, Bay, etc. Theme Park View is the same as before.

ETA: Room categories have already been updated in Disney's system and in the TA portal, but not in MDE. So when I pull up a client's reservation in my portal, for example, I can see that they now have a Resort View Room when it was previously listed as Standard View, but my clients' MDE accounts still show Standard View. Disney is saying that guests who booked before the switch will have the exact room type they booked (so if they booked a Garden View Room, they will get a room with a garden view), but moving forward people who book a Resort View Room would get either a Standard, Garden, or anything with a non water or non theme park view).

Ugh I am really not liking this change. They are showing both rates for December, but I assume the standard view will be phased out because now the Resort view shows Gardens or Rooftop or Parking area. Here's December:

Standard View

Views of Disney's Beach Club Resort Rooftop or Parking Area
1 King Bed or 1 King Bed and 1 Day Bed or 2 Queen Beds or 2 Queen Beds and 1 Day Bed
Sleeps up to 5 Adults
Standard Rate
$738.33 USD$73833USD
Avg/Night Excl Tax

Resort View

Views of Disney's Beach Club Resort Gardens, Rooftop or Parking Area
1 King Bed or 1 King Bed and 1 Day Bed or 2 Queen Beds or 1 Queen Bed and 1 Day
Sleeps up to 5 Adults
Standard Rate
$791.67 USD$79167USD
Avg/Night Excl Tax

Oh yes, 800 dollars a night for the potential (however small) of a parking lot view 😬
