New DVC member here. I made my first reservation using points from the first resale contract I've purchased.
Just wanted to add to the current information pool for those who are in the middle of the various steps.

Of course I would have liked to stay at my home resort, Polynesian, but it's my 50th birthday January 7th. Just looking to celebrate anywhere down there in Orlando during WDW's 50th.

Welcome Home! Where is your first stay at? Happy 50th in advance! I’m also turning 50 next year (Sept) and taking a trip just before that to celebrate. Woot.

Stalk the RAT (resort availability tool). If you’re willing to split stay, and move the dates you’re staying a day or two around your birthday, you’ll probably be able to get a Poly reservation between now and then.

Find an edge and work it.

Let’s say you’re staying 5 nights. Keep looking until a Poly date opens on day 1 or 5. Swap it out.

Let’s say it’s day 5. Now. Relentlessly search for day 4. Find it, swap it.

Let’s say you only find 3 days. Then you’ll be stuck with 2 where you are now, and 3 where you want to be. I call that a partial win.

This far out from January, with the inventory Poly has, odds are favorable you’ll be completely successful. I am, more often than not.

When I’m stalking, if I’m playing on my phone, I’m checking at least hourly.

It works. I almost never use the waitlist, it’s too slow to notice open dates and I don’t want to tie up my points there if I’m stalking it in my own.

It works. I almost never use the waitlist, it’s too slow to notice open dates and I don’t want to tie up my points there if I’m stalking it in my own.

I've never gotten a waitlist filled. I've filled a dozen myself by stalking.

I've had a few small waitlists filled. Never anything more than 3 nights.
