Here is the quote from The Mickey Monitor about the card...
"This summer, remember to pick up you Walt Disney World Resort Shopping & Dining Gift Card and load it up with amounts from $5 to $1500. It makes a great gift for family and friends! This new card can be purchased and used at select merchandise and food & beverage locations throughout the Walt Disney World Resort."
I was thinking the same thing. I made a purchase at a Disney store recently with several Disney dollars and they stamped the Disney dollars. I had never seen this before and asked why they stamped them. The response was that they have to stamp them after they are used. My thought was that seems odd, now they will have to destroy them. I always thought that they were put back into cirrculation. Guess not and if this is true, that can get very expensive. I mean print "money" just to be used once. At least with the card they can be reloaded.
I agree that they should keep the Disney Dollars. We'll see, right?
I'm leaving for Disney at the end of the month (cross your fingers that this happens please) and will ask about this new card. My real question is can I add more $$ on the card while at a disney store or just add it over the phone have to be in person at the World?

I am thinking that because DS is now TCP, they have to "redeem" the to disney to get paid since it isn't the same company. I have a feeling Disney Dollars in the World don't get stamps and do still get reused.
I have never used Disney Dollars. The stores didn't have them when I needed them. But stamping them makes sense. The are just paper. From a retail aspect, you wouldn't want anyone getting a hold of some that had been used, then reusing them. Retail theft is bad enough, why give anyone another way. Would you want to go "buy" DD$, and them give you wrinkled, dirty used ones? Our legal tender is more of a "fabric" then paper, but even those that get "badly worn" are to be taken out of circulation. Although it appears to never happen. Proably a lot of paperwork involved.
I buy Disney Dollars every week (seriously...I know it's a problem ) from our local Disney Store. I guess we are lucky, there are 5 Disney Stores within 25 miles of us, 1 within 2 miles.
Anyway, I buy them for our trip. I find that buying a little here, and a little there, add up to big bucks by the time we actually go! Having bought them for years, the CM always stamps them! Never thought about it, but don't worry about this being a sign they have always stamped them.
The gift cards are great too! It was pretty silly as adults counting out tons of Disney Dollars for high priced items, this will make it more "adult" (do I really want that...nah... )
Anyway, I have a great rapport with the Store manager, and she told me they just minted the new 50th Anniversary bills which are good for distribution until June 06. I guess we're ok till then..
hope this helps!!
Can anyone find out if it might be possible to get them online? As I dont get Disney Dollars here ( there are no more DisneyStores at Germany) and dont get the Disney CC I would like get such a card for our WDW savings.

When I was a cm at TDS (many moons ago) we had to stamp the disney dollars as they came in and they were never reused. As far as I know, no store or WDW property was ever supposed to reuse the Disney Dollars. The reason given for this was because they were frequently given as gifts and who wants to get a bunch of abused and crumpled Disney Dollars for a gift? So Disney always sold them neat and new and just destroyed the used ones.
How does this differ from a pre-paid VISA card? You can get pre-paid VISAs (to use as gifts) at the bank with a variety of pictures on the front;some are travel-themed, and they can be used anywhere -- not just at Disney.

There is no difference (except I think some of the prepaid visas and amex's have set up fees) but w/the Disney card, DISNEY gets your money and they know it. With a visa that can be used anywhere, Disney doesn't get the $$$$, necassarily. They want you to give this card as a gift or buy it for the "convenience" so they get the $$$.
Keep in mind with Disney Dollars you get cash back when you redeem them and are good at WDW and DS. The WDW shopping and gift card is only good at select locations throughout WDW. So, you're kind of limited to where you want to spend your gift card since its only good at WDW. And, you will not get cash back like the DD.
