New refillable mug policy at All Star Sports

I think it's an excellent idea. It will help keep the cost of everything else from going up if people are using the program within the guidelines. :thumbsup2 It shouldn't bother anyone that's not doing anything wrong.....

as long as water is still allowed i have no problem with this!!!

This story has come up several different times in the past few years.

Basically Disney applied for a patent on the technology that they could do this, but they have yet to act on it.

Is the photo of the machine on the mice chat board not real or is the problem in the mug end of the technology??

The blog makes it sound like they have actually acted on it this time, and it's in practice at All Star Sports.

Look carefully at the pictures from the link on the first post of this thread. It shows a picture of the "new" refillable mug machine. Doesn't the machine show a picture of last years mug instead of this years? I know I have the mug shown in the picture and I have not been to Disney in more than a year. Just curious if what this article says is true why there is a picture of an old mug not this years.

Isn't that what they do at the water parks now? :confused3

Sort of, except I would assume this technology is more complex because of the nature of the two. Everyone's mug at the water parks are good for that day only, so the machines only need to recognize one barcode, but at the resorts people are checking in and out on different days and staying for different lengths so they can't use the same system the water parks do.

I can't see where to scan on the new machine either. The water parks have a scanner that is pretty visible http://orlandowaterparks.blogspot.com/2010/07/refill-stations-at-disney.html

I am also a bit skeptical because this rumor dates back to 2002 at least...

You can see more about the actual patent here http://www.disboards.com/archive/index.php/t-2472192.html

There is a bit more information in the May 2010 post on Disney Food Blog http://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2010/05/22/patent-no-refillable-mugs/

So, due to the numerous old rumors about this I am very much in camp "Need to see it to believe it"

They definitely applied for the patent, so it's possible. It's just a rumor that's "Cried Wolf" too many times for me right now. :goodvibes

Do you really think that this will stop Disney from raising tickets prices, room rates, and everything else that can withstand a price increase? I don't think so.

More likely RFID. A LOT harder to duplicate, readers are less noticeable.

I see... thanks. Like I said it really does not matter to me.. I have never reused a mug... (even though when I first bought one many moons ago I don't remember a stated limit... but who would expect free soda for life for just buying one mug ??:rotfl2:) (( I know some do and I am NOT trying to start one of those discussions!!))

But since we have had to go in July for the past 2 times we went, getting free water from the fountain is a plus!!

I remember after it was announced that WDW would be using the bar code system for the mugs at Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon that same article said that same system would be tested at the resorts, however we know that never happened. Plus since this article came from an unofficial Disney blog I will believe it when I hear guests actually using this who have stayed at the All Star Resorts.

How would a person fill and re-fill a "regular" drink purchased with the meal?:rolleyes1

Do they advertise free refills for regular fountain drinks? I don't recall it...but the article says that you can refill regular cups for a short time.

I would like to see the ability to refill regular cups, then I wouldn't need to lug around those mugs all day. (It would actually make the refillable mugs more appealing to me)

Like others, I have NO issue with them implementing this. However, I am still in camp "need to see it to believe it" or camp "wait until we get widespread reports from those staying at Disney this week"
