I couldn't catch it all on the news this morning, but for this new tax thing there is to be a rebate cheques sending them out this week from the government. Any clue how much?

We received ours yesterday! It was $330!! :cool1: From what I understand there will be 2 more - one in December 2010 and one in June 2011!

From the website:

Eligible families - including single parents and senior couples - with an annual income below $160,000 will receive three payments totalling $1,000.

Eligible individuals with an annual income below $80,000 will receive three payments totalling $300.

Payments are to come now, December and June 2011.

(If you didn't file your 2009 income tax yet, you won't receive it. You would receive it approx. 8 weeks after your tax return is completed.)

PS - This is only for Ontario - so don't get too excited, all of you in other provinces. LOL

Ours is going to our trip fund!

Not to rain on the parade but your wallets are going to be hit with an extra 8% starting July 1st on heating/cooling your home, gassing your car, subscriptions, memberships and many of the other goods and services not presently taxed by the PST. This is not "free" money, just a temporary bribe, er, gift, to offset the initial impact of this tax grab.

In one hand, out the other.

Dalton McGuinty---Worst Ontario Premier ever.

I realize it's not free...and that it's a bribe, but holy cow! Can I ever use that this month! I've been wracking my brains coming up with ways to pay my girls' camp bill!:cool1:

You could not have said it better. Dalton McGuinty will go down in history as the guy that helped destroy Ontario with all his tax grabs, extra health taxes...etc . This rebate is only good for one year so while our hydro goes up 10% plus HST along with gas, heating costs, it will be hard to recover. Its amazing that he let the tax go on all the essentials. Thats my rant...sorry

I know it's not free money but since I was counting on the HST and not on a rebate, it feels like free money!

My dd's (already expensive) dance lessons have HST now. I think it's nuts to get a Federal tax credit for children's athletics only to be taxed extra on them, especially since all the community centres, dance studios, soccerclubs, etc now have to provide receipts for the tax credit. Why not not give the credit but not charge HST on kids' athletics?

Don't get me started on Dalton McGuinty ;) I can't play nicely in the sandbox if he's invited.

I had no idea about this rebate. I was just looking at my account online and had no idea why there was a deposit this morning for $330.

Once again the Dis answers all questions. You guys just saved me a trip to the bank. Thanks. :cool1:

Here Here!!!

Don't forgot his platform 7 years ago - NO NEW TAXES! His Liberal Party will never get my vote again.
To add to that - there's been no rebate cheques received in this house yet.

I wouldn't play nice in the sandbox with him either Snickerboo ;o)

Ohhh, if I move to Ontario and get those rebates, I can upgrade to deluxe - maybe even the POLY!!

We have been paying HST on EVERYTHING here since it first started...
everything from electricity, phone, lawyers, music lessons, airline tickets - even the price of booking WDW vacations.....any goods or any services (except actual groceries)....it does add up but you do get used to it....:rotfl2:. Not sure what your PST is/was, but in the long run, we went from the 7% GST and then an additional 11% NB PST (and the 11% was added to the total of the product and GST together - i.e. tax on a tax) on a lot of things to 15% and now we're down to 13%.

On the brightside, the HST will not apply to books. So when you go buy the latest WDW travel guide, the price on the cover is the price at the cash.

Amazing how the current leader is always the worst in history, isn't it? You could always have David Miller as your fearless leader. Or a city Councillor who spent taxpayer money on a bunny suit. Now that is scary.

O.k I am still not sure about who gets the rebate and who doesn't.???
I saw the first posts about the "rules" but .....
I actually filed a tax return just for this reason even though i do not work and have no income......but I didn't get any info in with my tax return stuff and haven't recieved a cheque so I am thinking I won't get one?
My husband works and we have 2 kids....is there a limit to his income....I saw that single people and seniors can make up to 180 thousand!!!! and we definitely do not make that!!!

any ideas??

According to the Ontario Ministry of Revenue, to be eligible to receive the June, 2010 Ontario Sales Tax Transition Benefit, you need to meet all three of the following requirements:
  • Be a resident of Canada on December 31, 2009 and file a 2009 income tax return by April 30, 2011; or if you were not a resident of Canada on December 31, 2009, provide a statement of 2009 world income to the Canada Revenue Agency, by April 30, 2011.
  • Be 18 years of age or older or have a spouse or common-law partner or live with your dependant child on May 31, 2010
  • Be a resident of Ontario on May 31, 2010.

You can read more information on the Ministry of Revenue's website (f).

I remember when I was a kid, going with my parents to Ontario to pick up stuff (groceries, clothes, etc.) because the taxes were lower than in Quebec. Who'd ever thought I'd see the day when the situation was reversed, lol.

I wouldn't worry about it... they are sending these cheques out starting this week, but I'm sure it will take a few weeks to get all of the cheques out.

I filed our tax returns & we haven't got a cheque yet.

I'm not sure, but if you sign up for direct deposit for income tax returns I would imagine they would just deposit it that way? I never sign up for direct deposit as I like getting the cheque & putting it in our savings account instead of our chequing because I would never notice it there, but I checked our mail yesterday & there was nothing there.

We were talking to friends about this last night. Of the 5 of us, two had already received a payment.
