Just saw this on the home page of my AOl.

I am thrilled that there is a new Princess, and that she is African American. After a brief search, I didn't see a picture or mention of the prince, (par for the course, lol) but if he is Caucasian, I am not sure how I feel about that. I would love to see an African American prince, but like that they are showing interracial relationships, too. Hmm...

She is beautiful...

He sort of reminds me of Gaston

Speaking as a caucasian Prince with an african-american princess wife...I think that it is great. Maybe it will get a lot of kids to ask some questions of their parents and when they see that the parents do really have a good answer as to why there is a problem, then they'll be fine with it. Way to go Disney!!!

OK, having thought more, and reading your response, I am glad that this couple is interracial. It will take FOREVER for another royal couple to appear, and showing them is better than making the prince African American. Maybe the next one can be?

I don't feel like I am articulating my thoughts very well. Hopefully what I am thinking is coming across like I mean it!

Disney is dipping its toes-the Prince's name is Naveen, a name with an Indian heritage.

So technically it's an asian/african romance. (People from the continent of India are considered to be asian.)

He looks kind of dorky though. If they're going to call him Prince Naveen, how about you make him look like the real Naveen- Naveen Andrews from Lost?

Yippee!!

FWIW, my kids don't bat an eyelash when people of different ethnic backgrounds are together, but they're insanely curious about when they see a really beautiful woman with an ugly guy-a la Julia Roberts and Lyle Lovett. Ah, girls, gotta love them...

:lovestruc I was absolutely thrilled when I heard that they were introducing an African American princess!

In the toy store at DTD last October there was a young African American girl looking at the princesses and her mom was saying, "Which one do you want?" and she just kept staring at them. It seemed like she was looking around for one that resembled her, and I felt so bad that there were none. It really broke my heart. It reminded me of that study of the little black girls that were asked to point to the "pretty doll" and given the choice most of them pointed to the white doll, not the black doll. That also breaks my heart. Little girls need to be able to relate to the things they idolize. So this is a really good thing for everyone!

After all, they have other "non caucasion" princesses such as Mulan, Pocahontas, and Jasmine. All I can say, is what the heck took so long??

As far as the prince being caucasion, I think that is great as well. There's nothing wrong with showing that love transcends all barriers including race!!!

i married outside my race.. i am white..
and my husband is filipino/ black.
i think its a great thing that disney is doing...
:lmao:

Is it just me? His look doesn't really scream white to me. Definitely lighter than her, but just kind of neutral.

i think he looks stuck up.. LOL that chin.
looks like some dude you would run into on the way off the sky lift :P
:rotfl2:

I belive that it is important for people to get over the idea that there is something wrong with interracial relationships...Years ago, the four year old son of my boss asked me (with my boss right besides him) why my wife was brown. I told him that is just the color that her skin is. I asked him if there was a problem with her color. he thought for a moment and responded that he guessed not. Suffice to say, his mom was quite embarassed.

oh yea.. i know.. been there done that..
my son was 3 at the time.. came home and asked me "why are you acting white" i was shocked. and explained to him that i was.. and so was he...
i found out that the church ran daycare (such a good price, was all black )
one of the other kids asked him that.. so he asked me..
needless to say i got another day care the following week..
so this princess thing is no big deal to my family.. she is very pretty.
she is just as classy as cinderella or snow white

I didn't even catch his name! They could have made him look more Indian, then. But cool, anyway. :)

I think it is truly great that Disney is presenting an iterracial couple. My best friend is white and her husband is hispanic, and I really upsets me sometimes the things I hear people say. I am however upset that Disney felt the need to completely revamp this story to make it more PC. I thought the original was going to be a great story about overcoming prejudice and adversity. Now all of that has been removed for fear of offending someone.
