I just called to make reservation for over presidents week in February and we thought we would go the week before so to take advantage of the value rate and I was flabbergasted to find out that the charge for the room on Thursday thru sunday spiked 25% from monday thru wednesday. The CM told me that it was not only the rate increase but the new "structure" for reserving rooms. Even if you were reserving for a week the rate could change and increase if there is a peak time over the week end.

This hasn't been common practice before has it?

You are correct - it's all part of the new pricing structure. You can no longer book the last day of value season and have the rate carry forward. Also, holidays may incur higher rates, as well as some weekends. It works out well for the people who were booking at the end of peak season, but not well for the people who were booking at the end of value season. It really narrows down the possibility of a reasonable rate.

I posted about this on another thread. We have gone right before President week to check in during the value rate in the past. Now with the new per night rates the same vacation in 2008 will cost us $875 more for a room at the Poly. Our future trips will be during value season now.

Not saying I agree with the change or welcome it, but the rest of the hotel industry has been doing this forever.

Disney is probably closing up that loophole that allowed people to check in at value prices and stay through peak season.

I am surprised Disney didn't change their "structure" many years ago. I have never stayed anywhere, with the exception of WDW, that the rates didn't increase on weekends and holidays. Even when we visited WDW and stayed offsite, we paid more for weekends and holidays.
