New Preferred AP Rule

I just renewed our Preferred AP's yesterday over the phone. Total charge for four was as expected, $425 including tax. The only negative: They told me that, as of Jan. 1st of this year, the expiration date is no longer one year from the date of activation (first use), but it is now one year from the previous expiration. This means that, instead of the expiration being May 20, 2005 (one year after the start of my next visit), it will be Feb. 1, 2005 (one year after the old passes' expiration date).
The only positive is that now I can convince my wife we will need a third trip next January to get our monies worth out of the passes .

Does this rule apply to all ap's or just the ones purchased after 01/01/04?

I think it applies to all APs bought or renewed after 1/1/2004.

Won't hurt 'em too bad till they start building lots of roller coasters up here close to us, from our standpoint.
Get too nit-picky and we're done down there.

I hope Universal doesn't start taking away AP discounts.

Taking away AP discounts = disappointed AP holders = fewer purchases/renewals = less $$ coming through = bad business move.

I'm glad that I know this now as opposed to when I would have gone to renew. I was going to buy the voucher to redeem at a later date (and confirmed this with someone on the phone not long ago), but will now just hold off.

Of course Universal may be being short-sighted because the will not get the money up front, in advance from people like me. I was willing to buy 6 vouchers and hand them the money now, but now they won't get anything from me until in the future when we return (our current APs expire in April).

The definition of "renew" with respect to continuous privileges such as offered by annual passes or memberships includes picking up when/where the old one(s) left off.

All I know is that Universal used to let you renew your AP and the date would be the date you renewed it, not a year from the date the AP was issued. Am I not understanding this correctly?

Right, Universal let you get a renewal voucher and the year didn't begin until a year from activation of that voucher. If I had of know that they were going to change their policy I would have bought the voucher before the change.

Well, if you look at it another way....it only costs $169 to buy a brand new annual pass compared to $392 for a Disney Annual Pass (not the preferred pass which is $520). We are still getting an amazing deal.
