New phrases that grate on my nerves...

What IS the new teen usage for God is beast? I'm not old, but I'm definitely out of the loop when it comes to those new phrases. You just don't really hear them (or I don't at least) on a college campus.

"Beast" is apparently the new word for "cool" or "awesome."

So whoever wrote "God is beast" meant "God is awesome," but still...I guess it's better than when the word for good was "bad."

I remember a thread like this awhile back in which someone mentioned the phrase "drinking the Kool-Aid" which came out of the Jonestown tragedy.....

So last night I was watching an episode of the new Degrassi series-- yes I am 34 and watch Degrassi -- in which one of the characters used the phrase "Ground Zero"......"Jenna was Ground Zero is spreading the rumor about your surgery..."

So my question is......offensive or not?

I can't stand all the abbreviations. Prolly, souvies, ressies and the newest one......embies! While I wish anyone that's pregnant all the best in the world, but really, embies???

The timing of this thread is perfect! My kids won't stop saying the following phrase which they learned from my nephew:

"that's so random!" I added the exclamation point because that is how it is used when they say it. They say it constantly, and I can't stand it!

The other phrase DH and I hate is:

"you know what I mean" - my SIL says this phrase ALL THE TIME. She will use it 10 times in a 5 minute period (yes, we actually counted).

I'm guilty of using aim/text speak when texting or messaging someone online; it has its place. As someone who teaches at the college level, it's irritating to see it used in formal assignments. I had a student turn in a paper that included "lol" at the end of a sentence. I wanted to give him a zero, but unfortuntely wasn't able to.

Anything beyond 100 percent. Percent means per 100. So you did not give 300% or 110 %. You gave, at most, 100%.

Everytime someone (like on the restaurant board) posts that something was "to die for" it makes me cringe and want to hold them to it

OK, I understand not liking some of these words and phrases (I don't like some of them either), but reading this kind of thread really gives me a complex! I mean, there is absolutely nothing a person can say that wouldn't offend somone here. Do we want people to never use new words and phrases? Wouldn't it be boring if we spoke nothing but perfect English and our language never changed? And if you don't like a new word or phrase, don't worry, it'll eventually fade out to make room for the next annoying one anyway!

I think it's just a place to vent and commiserate. There are tons of other threads I find annoying/offensive but I generally just ignore them.
