New Pentax DSLR!!!

Pretty cool. I'm not sure that there'd be a market for it, but it's nice to see a company that treasures its heritage. They should make a retro-digital version of the K1000. Incidentally, I actually saw a K1000 in use the other day.

In other Pentax news, it looks like the Hoya deal is official now. Here are some quotes from the Wall Street Journal article (link requires paid subscription).

entax Corp. agreed to a tender offer of 105 billion yen ($863 million) by Hoya Corp., bowing to pressure from shareholders who strongly favor a tie-up between the companies.

Pentax sought to remain independent, but was under pressure from investors such as major shareholder Sparx Group Co. to show it could generate equivalent value on its own. News of a possible offer by Hoya sent Pentax shares up 18% in early April.

Hoya President and Chief Executive Hiroshi Suzuki said in a news conference that his company expects to spend 105 billion yen to make Pentax a 100% unit by November. "For the time being, the unit's name will be Pentax, and naturally its brand will also be Pentax," he said, although a complete merger into Hoya "is possible in the future."

Hoya, the Tokyo-based optics maker, has long coveted Pentax's expertise in making medical equipment. But analysts and investors have questioned its plans for the company's venerable but struggling camera operations.

"I don't think there is any need for big changes" to Pentax's camera operations, Mr. Suzuki said. "The current scale [of the operations] is good."

By the way, I was reading on some Pentax-specific forums some more details.

Apparently some of the articles on DPReview have either been somewhat twisted or completely wrong. (Specifically, that Phil posted earlier than Pentax had originally agreed to the merger and that the entire board quit - none of which is true.) The Washington Post article is also a bit FUD-filled, calling the camera division "struggling" when in fact they're well in the black at this point, winning awards, and last month the K10D was the top-selling DSLR in Japan.

There's a Bloomberg article here also.

So far, any fears of Hoya jettisoning Pentax cameras seem to be unfounded, and the head of Pentax's camera division does have a seat on the new board I wouldn't be surprised to see the compact camera line-up trimmed, that's an especially brutal field to be in if you're not one of the top two or three companies, and Pentax compacts seem to mainly do well in the waterproof line, where only Olympus really competes.

We have to wait until October for the official press releases on their next DSLRs, but word from those who know is that they should be pretty impressive... I'll probably have to wait until then to decide if one of those is for me or if the K10D will still be my next camera of choice.

As for the camera itself... very neat, I'd consider one, it'd match my K1000 nicely, though I would want an integrated flash for when I don't have the big one handy. I was thinking about the Sigma DP1 the other day and that if you lopped the flash off one of the 6mp Pentax DSLRs and attached their "pancake" 21mm lens, it wouldn't be all that much larger than the Sigma, and give you more functionality for less money. OK, no Foveon sensor, but still awfully nice image quality in a relatively small package. The other DSLR manufacturers could do it too, but there's no comparable series of pancake lenses in any other mount, to the best of my knowledge.

and last month the K10D was the top-selling DSLR in Japan.

Kudos, but are you sure it was for the month? I know it was the top seller for a 7 day period but I am not sure it was tops for the month.

he Washington Post article is also a bit FUD-filled, calling the camera division "struggling"

I didn't see an article in the Post. It's entirely possible that the article in the Wall Street Journal is completely wrong about the state of Pentax's camera division. Perhaps the fans know its financial condition better than the business press.

Anewman, I think you're right... I should have written week, though for all I know, it could be two weeks now - the most recent list is all PnS cameras.

Mark, I was full of mistypes, I meant WSJ not WP. I don't think that the WSJ is necessarily guaranteed to be an authority on a Japanese company, especially in an issue like this where there have been all sorts of rumors and speculation flying around, including the "legitimate" press both here and in Japan. Again, the camera division is doing very well right now, including in pure profitability, and is hardly struggling. Were they struggling a year ago? Perhaps. Not today.
