New Owner Question--Do Upgrades Exist in DVC?

A year or so ago we were waiting to check into a 1 bedroom at BCV for 2 nights. It was after 5pm. There was a problem with the room so they put us in a 2 bedroom suite at the Yacht Club. In addition to the living room it had an octagon shaped sun room. It also included the free food and drinks for the concierge level. Pretty cool.

I watched a YouTube video last week where someone was upgraded from a studio to a 1BR at BLT., so I guess it can happen. Has not happened to us, though.

Another with virtually no experience being upgraded. In the 18 years as members, we were upgraded just once-at Jambo, we had a 2 night reservation in a Value studio, got savannah view on the other side (Arusha Savannah) because they said that there'd been an unexpected maintenance issue in the Value Studios.

In over 22 years of owning DVC, we were upgraded one time and it was a single cash night we added to our points stay. We booked a studio on cash and had a seven night reservation on points in a one bedroom. They upgraded our studio on cash to a one bedroom so we didn't have to change rooms.

Looks like a rare occurrence with just enough chance that one can dream :)
Even a 1-in-200 shot is a decent lottery chance. Good luck, lol.

You're going to need a maintenance issue to pop up. Or a guest failing to vacate and they have no place to put you. Those don't happen very often.

They gave us a two bedroom lake view instead of a studio standard view and some food surprises when we checked into GFV for our 50th Anniversary celebration. We have friends who were around and we shared the treats with them. Unfortunately, they already had paid for the night somewhere else, so they did not join us overnight.

Our “bill” included a line for the two bedroom but showed no charge. I have the screen shot!

I seem to recall receiving a "near hospitality" studio at OKW a few years back when I was booked into a regular studio but I would not necessarily call that an upgrade as the point values are the same.

In 2013 on a week long trip to Aulani I wanted a 2BR but was only able to reserve a studio and a 1BR. When we checked in I asked if they had a 2BR available and was told yes. The CM merged the two reservations and we were given the 2BR. Interestingly, the total number of points for the 2BR was less then the 1BR studio combination so points were credited back to my account. Otherwise, we've always gotten what we reserved. In short, it doesn't hurt to ask.

Typically, it happens when the room reserved is taken out of service for some reason,

Definitely my experience.

We were offered a grand villa when our 2 bedroom was a mold extravaganza. My then-husband let me make the decision, but I lose my brain-power when I encounter mold, and said no, that I just wanted the 2 bedroom we paid for. Oops.
