Hi, We will be going to NO for Mardi Gras and I would like to be able to get ashes on Ash Wednesday. Can anyone recommend a nice Catholic Church in the area of the French Quarter. Thanks
Yes, St. Louis Cathedral is the heart of Jackson Square and walking distance from anywhere in the French Quarter. We go there whenever we're in New Orleans and walk even from the Loews Hotel which is about a mile away. After Mass, go across the Square, cross the street and have coffee and beignets at the Cafe du Monde unless you're fasting.
ETA- LOVE your avatar! The cupcake castle was a favorite because it was decorated that way fr our daughter's first WDW trip.
You can't swing a cat in this city without hitting a Catholic church, lol. We have a lot of repenting to do. But yes, I agree that St Louis Cathedral is the way to go- very historic and beautiful.

I'd forgotten about that little extra. Almost makes me want to be religious again.
Mmmmmm...Beignets! Go before lent...all partying sort of lightens up right after Ash Wednesday anyway.
That is the one thing that always amused me about New Orleans. Go to Bourbon Street on Saturday night and it is absolutely wild...head into the French Qtr. on Sunday Morning and it seems like a monastery. Such a contrast and part of its charm. There is no other city like New Orleans.

Former NOLA native here. St. Louis Cathedral is super crowded on Ash Wednesday and many people assume that the party lives on the day after Mardi Gras. If you are visiting assume that you are going into mourning the day after Mardi Gras. Many places have been open non stop for Mardi Gras and are closed on Ash Wednesday, so plan on it being a very peacefuly day in the city.
If you want to attend a less crowded mass plan on heading over to Immaculate Conception, a Jesuit church. It is a beautiful building and is right across from the Roosevelt (A Waldorf Astoria Hotel) and after mass you can a engjoy a wonderful meal at the hotel.
