New mommy help needed!!!!!!!

Congrats! I second the Always Overnights. And if you have any, um, "soreness" from a v-birth, pop a few of those babies in the freezer! :thumbsup2

Thanks guys! I went with always overnight, but without the wings as I hate those things. So far they have worked just fine. I was having more of a problem with coverage area instead of absorbancy, so these are great!

I'm glad to hear that breastfeeding helps, we were able to pick that up pretty well after only about 2 days. If I could get the pain and uncomfortableness to lessen, I'll be a happy camper. I have a bobby pillow and haven't used it once to nurse, but am sitting on it all day.

To the "nosy" poster, she was born late Wednesday night and weighed 7lbs 2oz and is 19 1/2 inches long. Her name is Harley and she has already been told all about Disney and that we can't wait to take her again (we went in November while I was 8 months pregnant.)

Thanks again for the help and any recovery tips are totally welcome!

Thank you all so much for the quick replies and congrats. Should have gone shopping for these myself before she got here instead of sending the husband. I knew I could count on my wonderful Disfriends. Anyone else?

What a great husband you have. My dh would rather die than buy me pads. I remember when I was pregnant for dd he kept telling me that I needed to remember to by "those things." He is too funny. Congrats on the new baby.

The pain of breastfeeding can be discouraging but it will lessen. I remember one night crying with ds because it hurt so bad and my poor "girls" were bleeding. My bff got me some cream I can't remember what it was called but it is in a purple tube and it worked great.

Congratulations on your new little Princess!!princess:

My daughter was the exact weight and length of yours. She is 5 now.

Enjoy every minute with her. It goes way too fast!

As far as breastfeeding...I had a horrible time with DD(now 11) but with DD(now 8) I learned a trick. Count to 30. I am all about time and I slowly counted to 30 and sure enough the pain was over. It does get better AND BTW...congratulations

Congratulations on your addition to the family!!!

Try searching for la leche league...this is a pro breastfeeding organization that can offer tips and suggestions on just about every aspect of it.
Find a comfy place to nurse and way to hold your daughter...you being relaxed can help tons.
Relax in a warm bath (over your chest).
Try to be positive about it...even when it hurts! I know nursing doesn't always work out for every mother, but it seems like those that have a negative view or just see it as feeding, not bonding have a difficult and give up (my sil).
If you are having soreness with getting too full before she nurses pump a little. Date and save the milk for that just in case you may need it time.
Good Luck!

What a beautiful name! Congratulations on the new addition to your family :wizard:

Yeah I have the Lansinoh and it does work really well. I'm glad to hear about pumping a little first, I have been pumping after and making a mess. Does anyone have advice about preventing sticking to the nursing pads? I seem to stick to the reusable ones, but not the disposable pads. I don't want to continue to use disposable, but the pain of pulling them off is too much sometimes.

I've always used Kotex Overnight Super pads - I don't know what they are really called LOL - but they are the longest and most absorbency LOL.

I didn't have that issue with the nursing pads but I only used the disposible and actually after a month or so I didn't need them. Did you try putting some cream on after for a barrier with the pad? That may help.

yes try the cream first, besides the cost, disposables are actually better for you, cleaning and washing the others no matter what detergent you use could actually make you worse, as far as drying, or even mastitis.

Glad to hear that you got your pad situation taken care of. I can understand how uncomfortable you must be feeling. Don't worry because when you look back a year from now hopefully you will think that all this discomfort was well worth it watching your kiddo complete all those awesome milestones.

As far as the nipple pain, use the cream and just remember that it should subside within a few weeks. If it doesn't get better you might consider trying a different technique.

I agree on the comments about using disposable nursing pads instead of washable. look for ones that have a liner, kind of like pad or diaper, that keeps you dry. Other than that the leaking should go away after a while.

Have you talked to a lactation consultant? If so then that's great! If not, then you may want to see if there is one available for you, they can be a great help.

Just remember that there is a lot of advice to be given and some of its good, some might not suit you, and some may seem crazy. In the end you are the mommy and you will do what's best for you and your family. Everyone is different and approaches parenting differently. No matter what you do, as long as you do it out of love you will succeed.

I have two DD and I nursed them both, each until about 2yrs old. I remember the pain, the leaking, the engorgement etc. But then again I also remember the ease and portability and the awesome feeling that I alone was supporting life.

Many congratulations! :grouphug: princess: :cloud9:

You just can't beat those throw away undies and the HUGE pads they give you at the hospital. Didn't they tell you to take everything in the room (exc the bed LOL) with you when you left? They just chuck it anyway. I didn't need to actually buy anything after I had my kids :-)
I'd go with overnight pads that have wings and shop at a discount store for some cheap irregular undies
Congrats on the baby!

I second the lactation consultant idea. Call your hospital- they can be really expensive but since it's so soon, they'll probably see you for free. Most have nursing mom groups too (nice to have some support). If it's painful, it could be a bad latch, which is usually easy to fix. Make sure you change your breast pads OFTEN. I only used them for a couple days with DS (been nursing him 2 years and still going)
As for recovery, if you tore at all- use witch hazel. Stick them right on your pad. Totally soothing. I had fourth degree tearing with DD (what a peach she is) and put ice packs in my undies. With DS it was totally easy, only two stitches, but i did use witch hazel.

Nipple pain- using cream will work but you can also just rub on some breast milk and let it air dry. Breast milk is pretty amazing stuff.

I have an appointment with a lactation consultant, but it's not until Thursday which seems years and years away. I do think that we are dealing with a bad latch every other feeding, because sometimes it hurts way more than others. Hopefully I'll get some great info on Thursday.
I have the witch hazel pads that they gave me in the hospital and I did take everything, plus I asked for extras but somehow I managed to go through everything. We still have a few of the wipes for the baby, but that's it!
I am already able to look at her and know that everything is and has been worth it. Recovery is so much worse than labor and delivery was.
My husband will be thrilled to know that I may end up sending him BACK to the store for more supplies since it sounds like disposable nursing pads are the better way to go. I thought leaking was just a part of breastfeeding no matter how long you had been doing it. Thanks for sharing that that tends to go away, I love learning something new!!

I have heard this too. Something about the proteins and fats in the milk, etc. I think. :scratchin

Disclaimer: I'm not an expert. I'm just recalling my own personal experience. Nothing is set in stone. :wave2:

It's more like your body syncs itself. Like right now your body is still getting used to the changes; dramatic change in hormones, producing milk and adjusting the supply to meet the needs of the baby. Switching the composition of the milk you are producing. Stuff like that. Leaking is like a side effect of all that.

I just remember my body getting used to nursing and somehow I just didn't leak like in the beginning. But man if I heard a baby crying in a store or something, I'd feel my milk let down and leak a little. It was not any major leakage like in the beginning, however I may have had to change my shirt.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that the potential for leakage was always there.
