New member question

We just bought DVC this year and this will be our first stay as DVC members. We reserved a one bedroom at OKW with our points but we're thinking about a two bedroom. However, I really don't want to borrow points so that we can vacation next year. Does DVC let you use points for part and then pay for the balance if you upgrade?

Okay I am going to give this a shot and someone can post and correct me (and they probably will, people on this board are REALLY good). But..as far as I know, you cannot use points AND cash for the same room for the SAME night.

So, if you want to upgrade to a 2 br....I would think you would need to use the points for the first couple of nights, then pay cash for any nights the points did not cover....

For example:
if you used 160 pts for a week in the 1 br. Then, if you switch to a 2 br, which is 22 pts/night, 54 on the weekend.....you would have enough pts for 5 weeknights, leaving 72 points. Then it would be 54 for Saturday, leaving 18, which is not enough for the second weekend night, so you would have to pay cash for that night.

Now I confused myself!! LOL But I believe you have to pay EITHER with points OR with cash for each night, you cannot book a night with a combination of pts and cash.

Above is correct. Points and cash do not mix. Any cash nights would be separate. Also, getting a cash night through DVC at its 25% discount is not that easy for many times of year and often you have to wait until closer to a date to even try to get them.

Can you book a reservation with a combination of cash/points if you don't get the 25% discount?

If it were me I would rent (actually I would have points transferred) from another DVC member to your account.

Check the rental board.

It would be better all around IMHO.

You cannot EVER pay cash/use points on the same night. As mentioned, you can rent one night on cash, pay the next night on points, and have them linked in the ressie. You can rent thru MS or you can pay cash thru CRO, either way. You can rent points from a member, too, and your ressie could look like "your points/rented points/MS cash/CRO cash". That's at least 4 nights. You can't even mix points from 2 different contracts that you own, unless you do a transfer.

Think about buying the yearly pass to WDW. its like 25 percent off and when you renew it its even cheaper. anyway, its worth it if you plan on going 2 years in a row.
