My wife and I just joined today. we are waiting for the paper work to and our cards should arrive the middle of next week the quide advised me. We got this years points but we have already had our trip this year. We are going again next June and will be needing 200 of our 300 points. We are wondering if we decided to transfer 100 points out will we still be able to make our June 2007 reservation. After the transfer will will have 50 feb 2006 points and will not get our next set of points till feb 07. I guess the main question is do i need to have the total points for my june 2007 trip before i can make the ressie or will the fact that the points will be there feb of 07 mean that I have to wait until feb 07 when the points are in the account to make the ressie.

The ressie you make are based on what will be in your account. So if you decided to transfer out your '06 points to another member, then you could still book your ressies for June '07 once that booking window opens (11 month out for your home resort) because the system will know that you will be getting your fresh allocation of points in Febrary (I'm assuming from your post that you have a Feb use year).

Hope that helps, and btw... welcome home!

You can make you June '07 reservation next month. They will take the points from your '07 use year when you make that ressie. If your '06 points are in your account now, you can bank them into '07 also, and have use of both years points together if you choose. That is assuming your use year is Feb. or March. Perhaps your guide already banked '05 points??? Not quite sure about that from your statement above. At any rate, WHEN you can make a reservation is always at 11 months from the date of check out. Memeber services will take it out of the correct use year's points. What DOES make a difference is when the reservation occurs. That's when those points need to be in the account. If they have given you your access to the members web site, you can go there and see your account in "my DVC". Remember that you can always bank into the following use year as well as borrow from the next use year. By using both of those features, you can essentially have 3 years worth of points available to you for one trip.

Vince,

Your initial post is unclear on several key points:

1. How many points did you buy?
2. When you say "transfer out," transfer to where? Are you talking about banking 100 points? Or, renting unneeded points to another member?

we purchased 150 points. we got this year points that we cannot use because we just got back a week ago. We have began working on next years trip and will only need 200 points. Out trip the following year to disney land will only require 150.

when i say transfer i mean I am hoping to find a current member willing to pay for our 100 points. I am too new to this to want to rent the points to non members so thought it would be better to find a current member willing to buy them.

Okay, following your assumption that you want to rent 100 points, here's the lay of the land.

With a Feb Use Year, you have until the end of July '06 to bank ALL of your points. You can bank up to 50% of your points by the end of October '06, so that would be the deadline to bank the 50 points you are talking about.

DON'T PLAY with the deadlines; do your banking well before so you don't forget. If you get Caskbill's excellent DVC Planner (free), it will show you your exact banking deadlines adjusted for weekends and holidays when MS is closed.

Whenever you bank, it would be in your best interests to bank before you make your ressies for '07. If you are only going to take one trip a year, you want to be sure you use your banked points, so you need to bank first.

I would try to rent/transfer your 100 points right away, because the later in your use year you wait, the less flexibility you have. Then bank whatever you have left over.

When you make your 2007 ressies, the banked points will be used first and you will not lose them. In your hypothetical example, your 150 point '07 ressie would come from the 50 banked points and 100 '07 points, and you would then have 50 '07 points left which you could either bank or rent.

Just a quick correction to the math... using Vince's example there would not be 50 points left over from the '07 pts because he'd be using 200 points (not 150) for his ressie in '07. (50 banked from '06 and all 150 pts from '07). Then in Feb '08 you would have a fresh 150 to use. But, as JimMIA said, you would have those 100 pts to rent from your '06 allocation and the sooner you get those rented the better and don't miss those banking deadlines!

How does one get Caskbill's DVC Planner? Thanks

Vince,
Unless you are really hard up for the money, I wouldn't rent out those points. If your first trip is any indication, you'll want more than 150 points per year. If you bank all of the 150 points you are getting in, and continue to use the banking system for a few years to come, for the next three years (starting in '07), you'll be able to take 200 point vacations, rather than 150 point vacations.

Bank 150 '06 points

Reserve/take '07 vacation using 150 banked points + 50 '07 points = 200 point vacation

Bank remaining 100 '07 points

Reserve/take '08 vacation using 100 banked points + 100 '08 points = 200 point vacation

Bank remaining 50 '08 points

Reserve/take '09 vacation using 50 banked points + 150 '09 points = 200 point vacation

Then you will *need* to add on to your contract because you are in love with 200 point vacations and don't want to "settle for less." :rotfl:

Perfect advice, Elaine!!! That's exactly what I would do--in fact I was thinking the best way to word it when I read your post. Honi :)

Bye the way Congrats and Welcome Home!!!
