I was reading this article about they are making a new movie about Walt Disney's 14 year struggle with the author P.L. Travers to make the Mary Poppins movie.

Well today I was just watching Walt: The man behind the myth and they were saying that Walt went to meet Travers and that he must of charmed her because by the end of the meeting she was ready to talk about the movie.

So which one is true? I would think the documentory but then why would they make a movie about something that is not even close to the told truth?

I was just wondering if anyone had some insight? If this is in the wrong thread please move me.

Thanks!

Well, it really did take Walt Disney 14 years to charm Travers into finally agreeing to give him the rights to make the movie Mary Poppins. She ended up hating the movie and refused to work with Disney after that, hence the reason there were no sequels. Hope that cleared it up a bit for you.

Being willing to talk about a movie and actually finalizing a deal for one are two very different things. Travers was very protective of her characters/stories and I have no doubt it took her that long to fully commit. There are many books in the Mary Poppins series but no others were ever made into movies because Travers did not like the first one.

FYI...If you go see MP on Broadway you'll see lots of scenes that were not in the film but were in the books.

I hated the movie, too, because it wasn't anything like the book except for the same names. Mary Poppins is not a cute person like Julie Andrews. Glenn Close might be a bit more suitable. Angular, a bit brusk, not a bit sweet and cute. It still bothers me. And I must have read the book 50 years ago or more.
