We received a Keurig for Christmas and have been very disappointed so far. We've brewed about 4-5 cups of coffee and 1 hot cocoa. They've all tasted like plastic. I don't know how DS and DH drank the coffee, I had to dump the hot cocoa because it was gross. We've had beverages made with my in-laws Keurig and they were all good.

Anyone else have this problem?

Did you run several "pots" of water through before starting to brew coffee? If not, start there.

When I got a new Keurig (I'm on #2), I started with a mix of vinegar and water, and when I ran that completely through, then I ran 2 containers of just plain water through. Took care of the plastic taste (which is normal with new Keurigs)

I read that tip online when I was searching for solutions. Vinegar is on my grocery list for today. Thanks.

Well now.....my dh got me the mini Keurig. I didn't want one, but it seems that he did, so he got it for me. What a guy!!! Anyway.....I've made cocoa with it, and he has made tea...both with the pod and last night with just the hot water and his own tea bag. The only decent cup was the tea made with the pod, but that tea had a strong flavor to begin with. Other cups were very metallic, but it could have been a hard plastic taste!! I told dh I was going to come here and check it out.
Guess I'll have to run some vinegar through it today..then a few cups of plain water. I know the instructions say to use bottled water, but how important is that?? We have used bottled water and it hasn't helped!!!

I ran 48 oz of undiluted vinegar through the machine (used the descaling instructions from the manual). It was fine for a day, but I made cocoa this morning and had to dump it out again because the bad taste is back. :headache:

The cocoas aren't very good. I think they come out kind of watery and have an off flavor.

It says use bottled water, due to the minerals in your tap water. I use our tap water, but it has a low mineral content--doesn't taste horrible, unlike most FL water. ;)

I agree. We would brew a kcup and then add another kcup afterwards. Never bought another box of hot chocolate.

Those with problems, call Keurig. That company has the best customer service.

I called Keurig, they're sending a new brewer. I have a bad feeling it will have the same problem though. :worried:

We've never had a problem. Hopefully this next one will be perfect.
Thanks. :)

Just for the heck of it, I tasted the water straight from the reservoir - that's definitely where it's picking up that plastic taste. We're going to try putting fresh water in the reservoir then flushing whatever water is stored in the machine out. Maybe if we do this each time, we can still use it while we wait for the new one get here.

I've had bad experiences with Keurig cocoas. At least with the Green Mountain and Cafe Escapes ones. The Swiss Miss are fine. Dunkin, well my first wasn't great but we'll see what happens when I use the large cup option. What I've started doing is running water through into a normal packet of cocoa. That tastes fine. Not sure what it is but the cocoas always taste a bit off. Which sticks cause I don't drink coffee or tea!

Thanks. :)

You're welcome.

There isn't any packing material stuck in the reservoir by any chance? Ours has a little thingamabob where something might get caught.

no taste in ours, but I did everything as stated in the start up manual before brewing any drinks.

I was wondering about packing material too.

I have only used 1 box of Swiss Miss cocoa kcups, and then just use cocoa envelopes with hot water. No problems with either of those. No plastic comments from DH about his coffee or from company. We use water filtered from our tap.

Good to know about the hot chocolate before I buy any. I bought the mini Keurig on black Friday & used bottled water for the first cup but have since just used tap water. Haven't noticed any bad taste at all.

I use Swiss Miss and it's good. If you make hot chocolate you should run hot water cycle through to rinse out the sticky residue left behind.

There couldn't possibly be anything in the reservoir. We have cleaned that thing out so many times at this point.

We did everything according to the manual also.

If you do a search for "Keurig plastic taste" you'll be surprised by how many other people have had this problem.

My dear BFF got my DH and I one even though I only drink hot tea from tea bags and a kettle. I thought I was dreaming things about the plastic taste until DH made a cup of coffee and told me that he tasted the same thing. Maybe I should call Kerig as well. Hope your new one is better OP.
