new jersey?

People that live near the shore don't actually say "down the shore". We say that we're going to the beach. :)

"Down the Shore" is a phrase reserved for bennies ;)

Actually, people who live north of the beach say "down the shore." :thumbsup2 True bennies live in Philly (crossing Ben Franklin Bridge). Maybe we northerners could be shoebies. (people who brought lunch in shoeboxes to the beach) :beach:

Usually people up in Northern NJ and NY say "down the shore". Benny's are from northern NJ and NY-B E N NY-this is the abbreviation that was on train baggage tickets way back when the train first started running in NJ-it refers to the train stops:

B-Bayonne
E-Elizabeth
N-Newark
NY-New York

Shoobies are what people from Philly are called.

Now I'm dating myself majorly...but check it out...that's the history. The Asbury Park Press even ran a story on it a few summers ago.

Hi. Not sure if I am late here. If you can get to LBI or Cape May while in NJ that would be your best bet. We go to LBI (Long Beach Island) every year. Avoid Seaside, it's nasty.

LOL Only us Northerns say "down the shore".

Just so you are aware - you have to pay to get onto the beaches in NJ. They aren't free like the rest of the country.

One of the few free beaches is Wildwood, but that beach is in the southern part of the state and quite nice.

All of the places recommended are great - love Point Pleasant but Cape May is great too.

We are North - we say we are going down the shore -in fact it is a point of pride around our area that we don't call it the beach - everywhere else has beaches but only Jersey has the Shore!
- never heard of Bennies or Shoobies.

Thanks for telling me what Benny means. My husband is from Toms River and every year when we get home he refers to all the Benny's at the beach. I've never heard that term for tourist anywhere else. Now I know what it means.

No problem...DH has been around since WWII and he tends to collect a lot of useless knowledge like this. I'm a tad younger you know so of course I can only relay it second hand! ;)

Hey, I'm a fellow Toms River resident! Good to know there are other Disney addicts in the area!
Anyway, my beach of choice is Island Beach. But for a vacationer Point Pleasant probably offers the full range of NJ Beach experiences! Boardwalk, beach food, pretty good beaches. It's a fun place for kids & adults! Long Beach Island was the beach I always went to as a child & is still lovely, but quite a long ride from New Brunswick. I've never been to Sandy Hook, but hear it is similar to Island Beach and it is definitely the closest beach to New Brunswick.
Wherever you go, have fun. I live 10 minutes from the beach & have definitely not gone as often as I'd like!!

Well, you want to decide what you want to do for that day. Pt pleasant is nice, and has a boardwalk. But it has alot of carnival rides and games. If you just want to enjoy the beach, and you have kids with you, they might drive you crazy all day asking for $$, etc. If you want just the beach, avoid Pt Pleasant. If you want the whole experience, you might like to combine beach and swimming with games and rides. Pt pleasant also has a cute aquarium right on the Boardwalk.

I sometimes took my kids to Avon, Manasquan, Island Beach State Park, so we would focus on the beach instead. With Avon you can still walk on a nice Boardwalk. No whining and arguments that way. Other times we would go over to Pt Pleasant in the evening to walk around an ride the rides, and play the games. (we live 20-30 minutes from the beach)

When I lived north, I went down the shore. You are right, if you live at the shore, you don't say that, I did not even realize it.

My explanation came from some "clamdigger" (Northerner speak for beach dwellers-at least when I was a kid in the 60's!;) ) friends of mine back in the early 80's. So I looked it up(come on, I'm a teacher:teacher: ) and all the sources I found said that the origin of Benny is uncertain. The train ticket explanation was given, as well as references to $$, BENefitting financially from Northerners' spending, and also a reference to Benjamin being a common Jewish name at the turn of the century. That IS more common in the northern half of the shore towns with shoebie/shoobie being more southern/Philly. That explanation did match what I had been told about the shoebox lunches.
