The same goes with the princess hat. It is called Princess Hat. It is very feminine looking. And yet the boys can and do wear it.

Now that I have also seen the bandana, I don't think it's overtly female looking. Both hats could easily be made unisex.

It is NOT a Princess ITS A GNOME HAT!!!!!!!:lmao:

BTW for the record I think both hats should be omnisex.
If i wore the bandana with earring I would look like a gnome version of an NBA star

DISboards.com Guidelines

The forums are a part of Pete Werner's Unofficial Online Guide to Disney World (http://www.wdwinfo.com), also known as "The DIS". The site is owned and operated by Werner Technologies, Inc., and has no affiliations with the Walt Disney Company or any of its subsidiaries.

The DIS is designed is to give Disney fans a place to share their experiences with each other. We welcome visitors of all ages and it is our number one goal to keep the DIS friendly, fun and informative. With this in mind, we have created guidelines that will keep the DIS a site that anyone can enjoy whether they're a child or "child at heart."

The following guidelines/rules are in effect for our message boards:

1. FOR SALE posts: For sale ads are strictly prohibited on any of the DISboards. Anyone posting such ads will have their post deleted. This same policy applies to links to your ebay/auction listings . "For sale" posts includes requests for donations. If you are participating in or wish to promote a charitable event, please email the webmaster at webmaster@wdwinfo.com for permission first. (You will be asked to provide proof that the organization is legitimate.) Until your request is approved, we ask that you do not post about it on the boards.

2. NO PROFANITY: Simply put, don't use swear words and don't post or link to suggestive or inappropriate photos. The boards are equipped with censoring software. If you try to use a profanity, it will be filtered and appear as all asterisks. Please don't get creative in an attempt to bypass the filters. This is considered the same as using the word itself and will result in an infraction. If you post or link to pornography, you'll be banned from our site.

3. NO FIGHTING/SARCASM: While we'd like to think that a Disney fan site is always lighthearted, there are times when there are disagreements. Let's face it, there are certain topics that can transform any of us into a raging "Donald Duck." When you sense this is happening, we ask that you step away from the discussion before it escalates into a fight. Just like Mom always said about fighting, we don't care who started the argument and we don't want it on the DIS. (Okay, she didn't say the part about the DIS, but you know what we mean.) No attacking others and no sarcasm please. Either will result in an infraction.

4. NO PERSONAL MESSAGES: The types of posts that we like to see on the DIS are those that everyone can participate in and benefit from. When a post is intended for an individual, it creates a problem and can be very awkward for both the person you're publicly contacting as well as others. Did you know that you can easily get in touch with almost anyone via the DIS Private Message system? Simply click on the name of the person and you should see a link for sending them a private message and/or email. If you come across a situation where the person has blocked these options, sorry you still can't use the boards to get in touch.

5. ADVERTISING: The advertisers/sponsors who you see on the DIS are carefully chosen. While we welcome discussion of them as well as other businesses that you have information or questions about, if its determined that you are using the DIS to promote a commercial venture, you will lose your posting privileges. In addition, links to the company's website will be blocked.

6. STAYING ON TOPIC: Each of the DIS boards focuses on a specific topic. Please look the choices over before posting on the wrong board. For instance, you don't want to ask about park hours on the Restaurants Board or tell everyone about your stay at the Caribbean Beach Resort on the Disney Cruise Line Board. It makes it easier for everyone to find what they're looking for when the boards stay on topic.

7. MODERATORS: The DIS has a wonderful group of Moderators who have volunteered to assist our visitors and monitor the boards. Part of their responsibilities is ensuring that our guidelines are followed which may require that a thread is edited, deleted, closed or moved. If these decisions impact you, we ask that you respect them. Should you have any questions, please direct them to admin@wdwinfo.com. Any discussion about a Moderating decision that takes place on the boards could result in an infraction.

8. LINKS TO OTHER SITES: You are welcome to link to your website on our boards provided that a) you are not promoting a commercial service or for-profit venture, b) you don't post primarily to promote your site and c) that you place a prominent link back to the DIS on your website. Before posting a link to another site, we ask that you please first check to see if the same information is available on www.wdwinfo.com. We take great pride in our website. While we make the boards available for your enjoyment, our focus is Disney travel planning.

9. DISCOUNT CODES: As mentioned above, the DIS is all about planning a Disney vacation. On occasion, Disney does release discounts which usually can be obtained via a code. This information will be available in our Discounts section. However, Disney also sends mailings to specific individuals/target groups which contain a discount that can only be obtained with a PIN (personal identification number.) If you receive one of these offers, please do not share your PIN/Code on the DIS for others to use. We respect the fact that these offers are not for the general public and will remove any posts that include this information. Understand that this action is for your protection. For example, say you use Mrs. Smith's code. When you check in and are asked to produce proof that you are Mrs. Smith and cannot do so, you will be charged the full rate.

10. SIGNATURES: Your graphics may not exceed 550 pixels in width in total and or 200 pixels in height individually.
There is a limit of 3 graphics not including smilies.
Clipart may not exceed a cumulative size of 50,000 bytes (50k)
You may have up to 12 lines of text maximum in your signature inclusive of any code required to post your selected graphics
Links that lead to other sites must follow the rules stated in Guideline no. 8
The DIS reserves the right to remove any clipart, even if it meets these standards, that causes technical problems with the boards, or that we deem inappropriate.
If you have any questions or need help please visit our Tech Support Board
Please note that the Official WISH clipart is exempt from these rules as are the Official Sponsor graphics.

11. INFRACTIONS: The DIS guidelines are an important part in keeping the site family friendly. While the majority of our visitors abide by our rules, there are times when problems develop. In order to handle these issues consistently and fairly, we have developed an infraction system.

As you can see, the infractions have different point values. The majority of offenses will result in a warning via private message accompanied by infraction points which will expire according to schedule. Providing that you do not accumlate more points during that time, no further action should be needed. The more serious violations will result in additional penalties or an immediate banning.

If you do incur an infraction, you will be notified. If you wish to question or appeal this decision, please keep in mind that your correspondence is subject to the same regulations. At anytime you may contact the board administration at admin@wdwinfo.com.

There may be times where a situation develops that is not covered in our infraction system. For those cases we reserve the right to take whatever action is needed in order to ensure that our guidelines are followed.

Now let’s go have some fun!

Let's keep it nice please.

Wow! I have to say I'm amazed at some of the responses here. We girls have received MANY girl-only costumes or pieces, whereas the boys have received maybe 5 items that are exclusively boys? Goodness, let the boys get an exclusive item now and then; it's really not the end of the world. Girls DID get a special "hat" today, so it's only fair the boys do too. I just don't see the problem. :confused3 If you love the hat so much, make a boy character and wear it. :thumbsup2

Nicely said and I couldn't agree more.

I personally wish the hat would have been made for everyone. I grew up having birds, and I would definitely like to have this little birdie. :) Of course it's silly to imagine that Disney would ever make real costumes for their stores that only girls or boys can purchase...I could just hear the rants. And I know this is only a virtual game, but I don't see why there has to be boys-only this or girls-only that -- to me, it just causes hurt feelings. :( Then again, maybe I just want everyone to be happy. :goodvibes Just my opinion...

Aye!!! I'm off for several hours and what happens to my thread?

Let's try to remember that this is the DIS community. Let's try to solve this problem...

I remember seeing several pages back, a letter-writing into the Black Hole. Let's try to get both hats to be Unisex. Both GUYS AND GIRLS. Both sides have to give a little...

Same goes for if this doesn't work. First, I think the Baby Hat should have been Unisex. Second, I don't think it should have been released (poor Baby...).

However, I've been roaring for several weeks now that there was a Girl-only suit. It was totally not fair that girls get SO MANY girl-only things without a GUY SUBSTITUTE. That's the main thing. There has to be an OUTLET. During the Halloween Weeks, there were Unisex things and Girl-only things (with the exception of the King Crown). I slightly notice a problem there...

It is true that there aren't many guy-only costumes, and this is slightly unfair. It would all be alright if there was an ALTERNATIVE. If there is a Blue Dress, then release a White Prince Suit with Blue Tie/Outline/Pockets.

With the Alice Dress, they released the Smee Outfit. There is an alternative.

If it turns out that there is no "rest of the suit" for this 'Baby Hat,' then I don't see what's unfair. Girls WILL get a FULL Pirate Suit. This has been confirmed for several weeks now. Maybe VMK thought it would be equal to release a much desired costume (The Bandana Pirate Princess) along with a much desired hat (Pirate Hat with Parrot).

Hat vs. Full Suit

Now, that doesn't look fair? Four articles of clothing vs. One? Both have been desired for more than a year.

So really, I don't see what's the big deal? Girls get a suit. Guys get a hat.

However... if there is any more to this Parrot Hat suit, then I will join the girls in uproar. The Parrot Hat is equal to the ENTIRE Pirate Princess Costume, in my opinion.

So, as you see, I don't have a problem with either argument. The Parrot Hat should have been unisex, but that is only if the Bandanna Hat was unisex. That way, it would have been fair. But those of you that want the Parrot Hat to be unisex, but don't think that there is a problem with the Pirate Princess costume, you should change your outlook. I don't mean to start a riot, but that is my opinion.

Ok I have to post, as being a VMKr since Beta where we had limited items for a really really long time, so be it if we have girl items vs boy items. What is the big deal? If I want boy stuff, my boy character gets it. If I want girl stuff Dis gets it.

Lets all remember the game is created for kids 8-12 in range. Mind you we all have become collectors of VMK stuff. But lets get off writing and complaining of your VMK injustices. Just like in real life, we sometimes have to deal with it.

Lets all remember the game is created for kids 8-12 in range.

That's actually part of my problem with this, and I have to respectfully disagree with your post, Dis. Gender bias in kids starts showing up as early as age 2. The research is by the boatload about how kids in this age range are thinking in restrictive terms of what boys and girls can be, how they should act, what they should wear. I do not see why VMK needs to add further to this mess by saying only some players should wear one hat while only some should wear a bandana. I work in an elementary school. I see this all the time. Kids I work with play VMK. Putting myself in the girls' shoes, I can see how upset they'd be over finding out a hat they had looked forward to for a long time is not allowed for them.

As for me, I don't have time to run more than my main character on anything remotely resembling a regular basis. I use my lone boy character when something boys-only comes out, I play some games to get the credits, and I buy 2 or 3 of whatever that item is. But I never get to wear the stuff except when I log in briefly when the next boys-only item comes out. I simply do not have time to alternate back and forth between characters when I can't even run 2 characters at once on my computer (hence why earning credits on the boy character is largely pointless since I can't transfer items to my main character anyway). I also feel like why should we have to play a secondary character that is not even our gender just to get certain items other than things like suits, potential prince outfits, etc.? Why should I have to play as a male when I am a female just to get a hat, something that has no point in being gender specific? :confused3

Typically I would agree with you. However, the difference here is that the girls only outfits have been very clearly meant for girls (i.e. the Alice outfit). We've had a hat similar to this one in the past, sans parrot, and both genders could wear it. So it does seem very odd that all of a sudden VMK would prevent girls from being able to wear a hat with a parrot...especially when other pirate hats are wearable by them (hat no parrot, Jack Sparrow hat). And then of course there are other hats that are more "feminine" or "masculine" in nature, but both genders can wear them (football helmets, pink beret, feather mask, Princess Minnie, witch hat, to name a few). Why this one? It just doesn't make any sense. And I think that's what's the most frustrating...to me at least.

Hi,

My theory is that in pirate movies I have seen girls do not wear hats like the hat with parrot and no matter what VMK does there will be people not happy. They made sure both boys and girls got something new. By the way you can win the old hat with no bird from the gold treasure chests I did this morning.

Bug

In POTC2, Elizabeth wore a tricorn hat. ;)

Ok... I totally agree with complains here about why?
So I say lets all get our letters wrote to "Contact Us" and maybe just maybe if they get enough letters from all of us..Yavn just might change his mind and make both hats (Bandana pirate hat/parrot) available to us!

I just sent mine in to the Contact Us...so if you can write here and complain then why not send one into them! Thanks all!!

Sorcerdonald, I agree, gender bias does starts early. But as does who is rich vs. who is poor, who is skilled vs. not skilled, who has freetime to spend playing around ;) vs not. But unfortunately it is a fact in life and VMK displays those similarities.

For my girls and I, it leads to conversations in general about life and helps us to build my kids to understand the facts in life. Which leads me to sing a line to a favorite song, that they hate to hear. "You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you get what you need." I know I am probably unique in the fact that I play the game with my kids, but also teaching them lessons and learning from the game.

...But lets get off writing and complaining of your VMK injustices. Just like in real life, we sometimes have to deal with it.
I mean no disrespect or insult... but wanted to say that just like in real life one of the ways I deal with it is by talking/complaining with and amongst my friends. That's what I'm doing here. :)

...If they want to please the boys and have male only costumes, where the heck are the princes?
Here here! I've been saying this forever. Where's my Prince Charming costume!?! Everyone knows how charming I really am, but they can't tell in game until I wear the costume, right? Seriously. I really want to be able to wear a suit and get all "dressed up" like the girls do as princesses.

.... Women, historically, do not wear those same types of turbans. It's very male looking. But they chose to make it unisex (omnisex for Goofy). The same goes with the princess hat...
Good points about the turban/princess hats. Again, it's understandable that VMK "needs" to draw a line between girl/boy somewhere. But it often just makes no sense where they do. And thanks to you and No.me for the use of omni- :cloud9:

well I also sent a letter the VMK hope it helps.......
I hope it does too. I feel bad for you and the other bird-loving female VMK players. I promise not to wear the hat in front of you. Anyone else write in?

(singing) One of these is not like the other...

Same goes for if this doesn't work. First, I think the Baby Hat should have been Unisex. Second, I don't think it should have been released (poor Baby...).
Forgive my ignorance on this matter... but who is Baby and why should I feel sorry for him (her?). Why shouldn't this hat have been released?

...If I'm not mistaken, that would make it even in terms of gender-specific clothing when you take into account the king's crown vs. the tiara. Actually, the boys already have one more hat than we do-- the blue baseball hat. ... Release a dress, release a corresponding boy's suit or some such thing. Choosing what type of pirate outfit is or isn't right for girls or boys is plain silly....
:teacher: Let's do the math:
- First, let's say crown/tiarra cancel each out. Score 0/0
- Girls get 3 princess dresses. Boys get nada. Score 3/0
- Girls get cheerleader. Boys get blue baseball. Baseball had hat, cheerleader had shoes. Fair? Depends on your opinion of clothing accessories. :confused3 Still, both were 3-piece costumes. So I'll count them the same... Score 4/1
- Then HSM red dress for girls. Wildcat sweatsuit for boys. Score 5/1
- Girls get pink superhero. Score 6/2.
- Girls get Alice, boys get Smee. Both are two-piece costumes, but Alice is released with matching hair-do, nearly a "hat" for free. Also the full Alice costume cost 1000 credits. The full Smee, 1500. Fair? I personally don't think so, but 2-piece is 2-piece; I'll count them equal. Score 7/3.

With today's hats the current score is 8 to 4. Girls have twice the gender-specific items than boys. I'm not arguing the quality/asthetics of anything. Which is better/ugly, etc. Just the quanity. How "even" is that? VMK should release 3x boys-only Prince suits (May I suggest the formalwear from Prince Philp, Prince Eric and Beast) and instead of a superhero, how about a knight armor (like Phoebus) to use with the crown. Then things would be even.

:headache: <sigh> :upsidedow

Well, fact is that VMK is propogating gender bias. They really should not be doing this. Personally, I can understand certain things to a point. But, it should really be teaching kids to break down those old barriers and stereotypes.

100 years ago, it was improper for females to wear anything but a skirt. Today, it's still considered unmanly for a male to wear a skirt. But guess what? They already do. They have for hundreds of years. It's called a kilt.
Besides, hasn't anyone ever watched Bosom Buddies? Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari wearing dresses.
Ever seen Tootsie? Dustin Hoffman also wears dresses in that film. And won an Oscar for it.
John Travolta is playing Edna Turnblad in the new film version of Hairspray.

Why do we really need to persist with and perpetuate gender discrimination?

Forgive my ignorance on this matter... but who is Baby and why should I feel sorry for him (her?). Why shouldn't this hat have been released?

Up until today, Baby WAS the only player that most people know of that had the pirate hat with bird in their possesion. It WAS the rarest item in VMK, because, well, only one existed. So therefore, Baby's hat ain't special anymore. Just put yourself in his shoes...

Good points about the turban/princess hats. Again, it's understandable that VMK "needs" to draw a line between girl/boy somewhere. But it often just makes no sense where they do.
I agree, the line seems to be randomly thrown in. Previous pirate hats have been unisex, so it seems odd they would all of a sudden say "nope, all but this one!!"

Girls did get the Alice hairdo, but boys also got a new hair style as well...so I'd say those canceled each other out, even if the boys hairstyle wasn't "costume-y" like the Alice one was. But yet girls DO get a lot more items, of course in real life girls tend to be the bigger accessorizers anyway (I work at The Disney Store and you'll always find more girls clothes/accessories than boys...same goes for our costumes). Now I know this is a virtual thing and I know there are always exceptions to the "rule", but IMO it makes sense that girls would get more stuff in the end. But still, it would be nice to see more things for the guys. I think it would be awesome to have Prince outfits!!!

I think what VMK was trying to do was balance it out today - give the girls a new hat and give the boys a new hat. :confused3 Face it, no matter WHAT pirate hat they released to the boys today, everyone would have been up in arms that they couldn't buy it with their girl character. What kind of pirate hat can you create that looks totally BOY? It doesn't matter what it looks like, girls will want it and cry unfair. But I see it as TOTALLY fair today - we BOTH got a new hat. Be happy! :thumbsup2

Do you think Baby is mad or that he is relieved that people will stop bugging him?

Do you think Baby is mad or that he is relieved that people will stop bugging him?

Who knows? Unless you ask him, you really can't know. I do think he was probably told about it before it was released.

I look at it this way. He's done all the testing for this hat for almost 2 years. ;)
