Why buy a new one? Don't they cost $1,000+? I guess I don't pay any attention to understand why the new phones are any better than the old ones.

You don't have to buy a new one. But if you do, you can get one that is unlocked.

I would get the 16 because Apple added a feature that you can get satellite phone capability if you were in an area with no service. It’s available on 14’s and up but if you plan keep your phone for years like you did the 8 it’s always best to buy the latest version.
