New holiday traditions

Our first holiday in our first new home in nearly 30 years (moved to Florida from Chicagoland). No kids for Thanksgiving -- DH's aunt is coming. DSIL and DMIL are coming for Christmas. No kids for Christmas, either. It's a little melancholy.

Right now, not really looking at traditions more than figuring out shipping gifts to the kids for the first time. And having to shop early enough to do it!

When we moved to a new state, didn't know anyone other than our family. Our adult children had a few friends with nowhere to go. So we started including anyone without family to come over. Makes for a fun Thanksgiving as the invite list changes year to year. Of course we love the company, but I"m always happy to hear that our young friends get to go home to their families.
We've always had an open invite to friends around us for holidays (Thanksgiving and Christmas) if they didn't have anywhere to go. We have a small family, so we're always welcome to have more people over. We usually have a couple people take us up on the offer for Thanksgiving, our next door neighbors have come for Christmas Eve the last 4-5 years (I make prime rib, so it's not one they ever want to miss ;) ) and Christmas usually has an assortment of extra guests. :goodvibes:goodvibes

I live near a pretty large university that has a large student population that doesn't go home during the holiday breaks. I've thought of starting a new tradition and hosting a Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner/party. My biggest concern is that I wonder how it would be perceived being hosted by a lone, unmarried male. I'd love to do it, but I worry that it may be perceived much differently than I'd hope.

For the last 2 years we’ve decided to do a family trip for Christmas instead of presents under the tree. We don’t necessarily have to travel in Christmas but the trip whenever it is will be the kid’s gift.
