New high end hotel...

From the article:
It would cost more than $160 million to build the hotel, financed in large part by a 70 percent return on bed taxes collected there over 20 years under a relatively new economic incentive aimed at encouraging developers to build hotels that meet AAA’s guidelines for four-diamond ratings.
Those type of incentives should encourage Disney to build another "Deluxe" hotel.

I'm happy to get another nice hotel, but a little sad about losing Anaheim Plaza. It's cool in a very kitschy way--totally 60's--and affordable. Affordable is probably a word that will not be around much longer near Disneyland

it is my go to place and I am so, so sad. not surprised... but sad

I am a bit surprised that more of the older hotel have not been bought and torn down. Seems like there is a big void at the upper end of the hotel market.

I am excited to have a new hotel coming to the area as well! Its about time in my opinion!

I think until recently the "conventional wisdom" was that Disneyland was just a locals park with little demand from high end tourists. But with DLR hotels often topping $500/night there's clearly a niche for upscale hotels in between the outrageously priced onsite properties and the lower end motels.

Yeah, my go to place too when going solo. Would be nice to have a nicer place to stay though that is easy walking distance.

Exactly! Something modern, and that has not had years of cigarette smoke embedded in the walls...
Something Mid-Level.. this is a Good thing!
I stayed at the DLH this last Sept, and while it was great, for nostalgic reasons, it was so hot, the Monorail was not running, and the HIKE through the concrete jungle that is DTD was less than appealing, and left me wishing I was on Harbor, because it IS CLOSER!!
Just my 2 cents...

I work the company that bought Anaheim Plaza last year. The plans are amazing! It's the same group that owns The Anabella and owned the Carousel before Disney bought it.

I'm glad that there will be nice alternatives to on site. I'm not a motel girl but sometimes that's my price point because there hasn't been anything in between unless you are farther away than I want to be. The recent additions and this new hotel will offer me a better choice. My one regret is that the nearby properties will likely all become higher-end with this trend, and many families will be priced out of the walking distance accommodations.

If you are looking for "high-end" / "luxury" hotels.....wouldn't you go to the DLR Hotels??? Yes, many of the Harbor Blvd. places are older motels, but they are a nice alternative. If I'm paying the prices at the high end, I'm going to the DLH or GCH.!

Well for me personally I would appreciate something very close to the parks that is somewhere between in price from the motels on Harbor and the on-site resorts. As it stands, if you want to stay close to the parks you either have to go all out and pay a lot to stay on site, or stay in a motel with far fewer amenities. Sometimes I would like the choice of something nicer than the Fairfield, without paying $400+ a night. It is such a huge price difference!

I believe a resort like the article refers to would be in the middle. They couldn't necessarily charge what Disney charges because people will just stay on site. But they will charge more than the motels and hopefully have all the better amenities that go with that.

Yip. Another way to get the family close to the magic is going away.

I wonder if the competition would bring down prices of DLH and GCH.

Hmmm...wait....uhhhhh...Wahahahahahaha!!! That will never happen. If it did, they'd be full all the time and we could still never get in.

I'm just hoping this isn't the trend of the future. We need more affordable accommodations, not more luxury suites.

When they start talking "luxury" and "high-end", I assume it will be pricey and NOT moderate. Sure it would be nice to have hotels in the middle, but even now the new Marriott next to Hojos is similar in price to PPH....so, hey, I'll stay at PPH.....pretty much the same walking distance and on-site.

I guess it depends on what dates you are looking at, but whenever I look, the on-site hotels are significantly more than the motels on Harbor. It isn't even close. So for me it is do I want to spend $1200+ or $600? That is just a huge gap.

If I were a hotel owner, I would put myself firmly in the middle of that gap and exploit it.

There is obviously a market for the high end hotels in the area as the on site ones sell out very easily and I don't believe it's JUST for being on site.
I don't think a majority of the motels are going away but there has to be some balance obviously.

When motels are running rack rate of anywhere from $120 to $160 and selling out easily , it's easy to see where the need lies most which is close by.
There are few full service hotels that aren't extended stay type and except the new Courtyard that are close by.

Disneyland and the surrounding area has evolved and with that so have the times and what people want and are willing to spend. I happily welcome another higher end option but also enjoy some motels too.
It just depends on my particular wants and needs per trip.
