Hi everyone - I am usually on the Community Board - just found this one and you all may be just the encouragement I need. I have wanted to do scrapbooking for some time now - I have the pics (I want to do one of Disney of course) and have some materials - just don't know where to start.

Can someone give me a gentle nudge in the right direction??

Welcome Paula!

A really good place to start is checking your LSS (local Scrapbooking Store) or finding a CMC (Creative Memories COnsultant) for a beginner's class.

That will at least help you identify what basic tools you want/need. You can go MANY directions froma first basic class, but this will at least get you started. You will also find many links to LOs (layouts) on this board.

If you really want a nudge, join our March challenge. Whoever completes the most pages for the month wins a prize and then hosts and supplies the prize for next month's winner.

Let us know if you have more questions along the way!

Happy Scrapping!

Hi Carrie,
I actually went to a Creative Memories class over a year ago - since then I have been working on organizing 25+ years of photos and have bought some materials from Michaels.

I am determined to start this week!!

Carrie,

How many pages does the average person do in the challenge? I too am looking for motivation and always love a challenge.
Also, what does you '5 for March' mean?

Paula,

Welcome to scrapping, beware it can become an addiction (a good one).

Dyan -Let's see... I'd say 20 to 30 on avaerage. I think the max is about 100 and the min. is 0 (me in January). It's just a fun way to keep up on what everyone else is doing. Come on over!

5 for March is a WISH board challenge. I'm trying to lose 5 pounds this month (basically trying to get back on track for my sins of November to February).

Paula - So, you're organized and ready to go? Sounds like you just need to take that jump! There's no time like the present!

Wow are you in luck! THere is a terrific scrapbooking store in Attleboro, MA. Depending on where in RI you are, this shouldn't be too far! (It may actually be in N. Attleboro). It is called Right at Home. And they have a website. Maybe you could attend a class there. Also, ask around and see if any of your friends scrapbook. Maybe friends at church or work? It is helpful to look at other people's scrapbooks to get an idea of what styles you like and don't like. Also, check out scrapping websites and magazines. It will probably take you a while to find "your" style.

Last bit of advise... start small with a finite # of pictures, such as a particular vacation or party. Don't start by saying "I'm gonna start with 1965 and work my way from there!" You will feel too overwhelmed. You mentioned starting with a Disney vacation? Perfect! Lots of great Disney scrapping stuff available. Check our AC Moore craft store, as well as Michael's craft stores. Good Luck! Have fun! Don't get caught up in the details of making every page "magazine perfect"! Start simple and work your way up towards more elaborate layouts! And come back here to ask questions any time you want!...............P

20 -30 pages? You guys are my heros! I'm in, but will be thrilled with ten. I am on my way to the lss crop room so I will have no distractions!

Thanks for the info. :)

I've spent the past year thinking about starting. I've gathered materials, sorted my Disney pix, read countless threads on the subject.... DDIL had a CM party that was a crop. I went, but was still struggling with figuring out what to do, as the CMC was new & kept telling me to crop my pix - but DH fills the frame so there was nothing to crop. (Not her fault - I just mean that things didn't solidify for me at that point.)

Anyway, I went to the 2Peas site & did a search on Disney LOs. http://www.twopeasinabucket.com/pg....ivate_layout=0+and+title+like+'%disney%'&pg=1 Then I sat & looked through them. I finally realized that one of the things holding me back was that I didn't care for the CM style - too plain. Most of my pix don't need cropping - just mounting. Seeing the LOs there gave me a whole new idea of what I liked.

Determined to finally get started, I joined the "Everything Else Disney" swap. That forced me to work on elements for pages that I had planned. I found myself planning more & more pages while lying in bed at night because I was "thinking about scrapping."

But I'll tell you what helped me the most to actually take action....it was the Sunday that DDIL brought her cropping tools over & we did pages all afternoon. Well, she got 10+ pages done on her 6x6 Disney book. I spent 4 hours getting the stuff together for a single page. Having someone to bounce ideas off of & working together was very helpful!

An interesting thing happened. DDIL told me I'm too picky about getting things "just right" - but then she was still doing CM style. Since then she's started doing other things to her pages. She's been visiting sites I've been sending her, etc. I'd gotten her quite a few scrapping things for Christmas & I don't think she knew what to do with them until we scrapped together. Now we both have new incentive! ;)

ETA: I was rambling about finding my style....everyone has a different one that suits them. I don't think there's a right or wrong way to scrap & certainly didn't mean to imply otherwise.

I was looking to make a Disney album that was extra special. It may contain our only 2 family trips to WDW ever. I want to finish this before I start other albums. When I get to that point, I may be more interested in getting them done & use more of a CM style.

First off Welcome to the Boards.

I find that my problem getting started and staying going is that I was trying to hard to make everything just so perfect. Lately I have given up and I am basically just trying to get my Pictures to paper and tell my story. As I learn what works for me I think my style and skills will get better. But just like everything else in life, I will be able to look back and see where I came from. At least that is what I am hoping for anyways.

My DD (6) just started her own scrapbook. I am letting her do everything herself. So as the years go on she will see how much different her pages are as she grows up. Kinda like her Mom and her scrap pages.

Best of Luck to you. :cheer2:

I could never keep up with you girls on the Challenge Thread. :sad2:

I guess I should add that my total last month was 2! It's not just about keeping up, it's staying motivated and sharing ideas!

P.S. Your style is just that! Getting your pictures on the page and telling your story is the main point. Anythign beyond that is just personal preference.

My DD8 just finished her first album. I bought a lot of supplies for her at the dollar store and once a month we do Mommy & Me at the lss. She loves her album and I know when she is older she will appreciate her journaling. It is so funny, but I will not help and it is creative spelling.

I can do 2!!! :cool1:

I am a long time scrapbooker - used to be CMC - but fairly new to these boards. :teeth:
There are many different styles of scrapbooking - find the one that you like for the project you are working on and you will be happy. I have a friend who is into a lot of embellishments working on a family heritage album and another friend doing the same kind of album but doing it all with borders. Both books are very nice and each fits it's owner's expectations. Some journal a lot in their books others don't. Some people make really fancy pages with one or two photos on them others do fairly simple pages with mostly photos and maybe a border or stickers. Do what works for you. My office has had me do some scrapbooks for people retiring and the styles of those books have reflected what I thought would appeal to the recipient.
One thing about the cm style is that you can get a lot done in a short period of time. That was one thing I remember from being a cmc - help people "get it done" was almost a mantra. I mean, by the time I found CM I had many many years worth of photos in boxes that needed to be put in albums so spending hours working on one page wouldn't work for me - I still have many photos waiting for their pages though - don't have as much time to work on it as I would like.
I have another friend into the "bumpy" scrapbooking - this is just to cumbersome for me - she even has to put spacers between some of her pages because they are so bumpy. I also want my photos to be the main focus of my albums - sometimes I think the photos get lost on the page when there are a lot of frills.
I have really liked the links I have found on this board and go to those sites and look for layouts I like. Once you figure out what you really like, you can go through a web site getting ideas fairly quickly. Almost as soon as you call up the photo of the layout your mind thinks "that's a good one", "that's to busy", "like those borders", "that font is to hard to read", etc. I have been looking for Disney ideas lately because of some books I am working on.
We went on a trip with my husbands brother and his son in Dec 03. I wanted to do a little book for the nephew so I have been looking for ideas. We are also going on a cruise in April with a group and plan to do souvineer scrapbooks of that trip - you may have seen my other posts about getting prints from Shutters.
Anyway - didn't intend for this to be so long - hope it isn't to boring. :sunny:

Welcome to the boards and our little addicion. :goodvibes

Umm Miss Carrie? That maximum total was 134 pages completed in one month. (But then what's 34 pages between friends? )

Anyway, once again welcome and just start. Getting the pics down is the main thing, style will develop based on your personal preferences as you go about it.

My best advice though is to find a friend to scrap with. Not only is it fun but you have someone to help you get through those initial indecision moments.

 I am a bear of very little brain. That high of a number, must have just fried all of the fluff in my head!

PJLLA - Thanks so much for the info on the store in Attleboro - I will have to check it out next time I go that way to the mall.
