Hello! I just discovered this site yesterday and it has provided a wealth of information re: navigating Disney with food allergies! My dd5 is allergic to milk, egg, and peanut; but not so much that we worry about same factory/shared equipment.

I have a couple questions if anyone can help me, sorry if the answers are elsewhere and I missed them:

Where can you get "allergy-free" chicken strips/nuggets? What makes them allergy-free? I know they are GF but haven't heard if they're milk/egg free. Are they found at most quick-service places or just a few? Also, milk/egg free buns if she wants a burger/sandwich?

What about pizza? Can you get a pizza with dairy/egg-free crust, with just sauce and pepperoni? (no cheese)? We can get it pretty easily with the pizza places here in Ohio but haven't heard about Disney.

How about Divvies or dairy-free ice cream/sorbets? Do most restaurants have them, either table-or quick-service?

And finally, Mickey waffles! Can we get them dairy/egg-free and where??

TIA!
Amanda

My DD6 also has dairy, egg, peanut/treenut allergies. I can't answer about the pizza or chicken nuggets as she isn't really into those, but I can tell you where we get the dairy/egg free ice cream and Mickey waffles. The ice cream we get at The Plaza in MK (restaurant and ice cream parlor). DD loves it there, it's always the highlight of her day! As for the Mickey waffles, I know for sure you can get them at Chef Mickey's, I can't really answer about anywhere else, but I'm pretty sure you can get them wherever they serve them. We always tell them when we make ADR's and then again when we get to each restaurant and the chef always comes out to talk to us and will make her a special plate. You can't just go to the buffet and expect to get egg/dairy free waffles.

I know for most CS you can ask to see their ingredient book and speak to a manager and they will be able to help guide you. Good luck!

I just remembered that when we ate at Akershus, I think they were also able to serve the dairy free ice cream. (I'm pretty sure it was there, sorry my brain isn't working right now)

You can find a nice assortment of Divvies at The Seasons at Epcot - carmel popcorn, jellybeans, choc chip cookies and brownies. They also had rice milk chocolate bars. My daughter was in heaven!

As for tofutti, in addition to the other places mentioned - when we ate at the 50s Prime Time Cafe, I was told that they always have it on hand. My understanding is that with advance notice, any of the TS restaurants can make it available.

Also, in post #3 of the disABILITIES FAQs thread, there are links and other helpful information. You will find a link to the official Disney website page about special diets and also email addresses for getting more information.

The disABILITIES FAQs thread is near the top of this board or you can follow the link in my signature to get there.

Welcome! I can definitely sympathize. DD13 has those same allergies plus some. You'll LOVE WDW.

The chicken strips/tenders are free of gluten, milk, egg, soy and nuts and believe it or not, they're quite tasty. Special Diets will send you an attachement stating where you can find the chicken strips. As of August 2010 they were found at the following CS locations in the parks but you'll want to confirm with Special Diets. MK: Columbia Harbour House Epcot: Liberty Inn & Electric Umbrella (we prefer rotisserie chicken at Sunshine Seasons) AK: Restaurantosaurus DHS: Backlot Express, ABC Commissary & Rosie's All-American Cafe (part of Sunset Market on the way to Tower of Terror)
I believe that the allergy hamburger buns are free of milk, eggs and peanuts. They're by Ener-G and are also gluten free. I've never really looked at the eggs because we have to avoid them due to yeast. They do not have a "typical" bread texture so be prepared for the fact that she may not like them (though she may be so thrilled to just GET a bun on her burger that she won't care). Make sure to ask if they can microwave the bun for 20 seconds as that helps a LOT.

What about pizza? Can you get a pizza with dairy/egg-free crust, with just sauce and pepperoni? (no cheese)? We can get it pretty easily with the pizza places here in Ohio but haven't heard about Disney.
You'll have to ask Special Diets about this. We've had chefs at resorts (Pop and POFQ) make special pizzas for our kids because none of the premade ones are safe (crusts have citrus fiber plus you can't get gluten and milk free ones). DD13 prefers chicken tenders or mac & cheese (at resorts chefs make this for our kids) but DD10 loves getting her special pizzas. I'm really not sure if it's possible to get a pizza for her at a park.

How about Divvies or dairy-free ice cream/sorbets? Do most restaurants have them, either table-or quick-service?
You'll find dairy free ice cream and/or sorbets at every Disney owned restaurant. Restaurants that don't have Divvies usually have either French Meadow options (those have eggs so not safe) or maybe Enjoy Life cookies (we LOVE these and buy them at home as well). There will be SOMETHING for her for dessert even if it's plain dairy free ice cream. For CS locations, look through the attachments sent by Special Diets. SD will tell you which CS locations carry these things.

And finally, Mickey waffles! Can we get them dairy/egg-free and where??
We've gotten them at our resort's food court (they'll also be gluten free but they're still tasty) as well as at several TS restaurants. A few TS locations will only have Van's waffles but most can make Mickey waffles.

TIA!
Amanda

My responses are in teal. Welcome to the disABILITIES! board.

We have been able to get Tofutti at most table service restaurants and if they didn't have it they had a safe sorbet.

Divvies were easy to get almost everywhere during our August 10 trip.

Make sure you stop at Babycakes at DTD if you have time! We can't wait to go!

Thanks for the tips! I did get an email back from Special Diets which is helpful. I'm surprised that there are so few counter service places with those chicken tenders, but oh well--at least we can plan accordingly and she may be OK with the burger if they have the special buns. Hmmm, don't remember seeing anything about the buns; I wonder if they are available at most locations? Will have to double check.

Thanks again for the help--I'm sure I'll be checking out all the other forums too as we plan our trip for this August!

There is an allergy pizza that I know is gluten and dairy free, but not sure about the egg. It is at pizza planet (DHS) and Village Haus (MK) and it is tasty as well.

I am glad to hear about the chicken strips! I had asked about nuggets last year and was told by the manager at POLY that she did have them and would make them, but that no one ever eats them. DD likes strips better anyway... her only option at MCD when we go there.

There is also DTD Babycakes NYC in Down Town Disney that had vegan (and for your allergy level nut OK) cupcakes, cookies, and doughnuts that are not pre-packaged. They will also deliver to WDW hotels and restaurants.

I agree, you will LOVE Disney for their allergy-friendly dining! Did someone mention sending in an allergy form to the dietary folks? We mark it on the ADR as well, but have always completed a form. Then the Chef comes out and either makes something special for the kids or tells you what they can eat.

Have a great trip!

It sounds like it's going to be a real treat!! We went 3 years ago, but I don't think there were as many options then--or if there were, we didn't know about them. They did have soy milk and rice dream, which was nice, and the table service chefs always came through. It is the counter service that seemed limited. One idea I had was to just pack some hamburger & hot dog buns that are decent, pop one in my backpack each day, and then at counter service places we can just order a plain dog or burger and put it in our own bun.

We were there last Feb with the same allergies. It was great. My DS isn't really into hamburgers, but I THINK I recall the regular buns being not safe. I think you had to get an EnerG bun instead which is also gluten free. I think bringing a bun each day is a good idea. Since our trip my DS has finally gotten into hot dogs and I often do the same thing.

We did have a great pizza at Pizzafari AK. They had to use a different sauce as the normal one contains parmesan, but they did it and had vegan mozzerella too.

I'll try to find my trip report.

Seeing this made me think I had not put a link to Babycakes in the disABILITIES FAQs thread yet. So I did and then added a link to the nfceagles posted.
So, if you are looking for them and can’t find them, check out this disABILITIES FAQs thread.

Welcom to the dis it is a wonderful place to make new friends and share all kinds of info. My sister and especially my niece both have food allergies. Sis just shellfish and eggs. My niece is allergic to all nuts and most legumes, sesame seeds, milk, shellfish and ginger. There seems to be a new one every year. She turns 11 in April. They are dvc members and go to disney as often as circumstances alow. My niece is an elite gymanst and she is very concious about her eating habits. Anyway my sister loves disney because it is the once place the can vacation and know that they will acomodate their needs. I would also recomend a copy of Open Mouse by Passporter. It is a guide book for disAbilities of all kinds at Disney. I also have a copy. Not because of allergies but because I have 2 children with special needs. I will also use it if we travel with my sister and her family. Somehow we never quite manage though our schedules never seem to gel.

I am dairy free and I have had such good luck at Disney restuarants. Every chef, no matter where, will go out of the way to make you a meal that is safe. I have stayed at ASMU and POFQ, and all the chef's were so wonderful in making me safe food. We even ate at POR and that chef didn't flinch when I explained my needs. Just be prepared that it will take longer than a regular "quick" meal b/c they cook it to order and have specific procedures they have to follow to keep the food safe. I always had to wait for a manager or chef, even if I knew something was safe, b/c that is the procedure.

The Ener-G rolls for hamburgers aren't fabulous. Someone suggested maybe having them toast it to make it tastier. I don't eat meat, so I always have the veggie burger.

Years ago I went to the Beach club icecream shop/restaurant and the cehf made me an amazing sundae with tofutti, marshmallow creme (fluff), peanut butter sauce, and chocolate syrup. I was in heaven. I felt so normal. Disney is the only place I can go out for icecream to. Sorbet just isn't worth my time or the calories so I always skip it.

Mickey waffles can be made pretty much anywhere they make them. They are gf/df/sf. The only place I have never gotten them is Crystal Palace. They just serve toasted Vans waffles. Which I love at home, but not on vacation. Chef Mickey's makes them and they also bring you a plate of anything you want that they can make. MMMM....I can't wait to go back.

I hear 50's primetime makes gf/df fried chicken and milkshakes.

I am headed to the world in Feb and I will be hitting babycakes my first day there. I'll try to remember to take pics and do a review.

Overall, Disney is the only place I know I'll eat well b/c they are so fabulous.
