I'm off with 49 points (Ship Battle) when I happen on a gold cannonball set. I nab it then see the enemy ship coming near. So I blast the bejeezies out of him only to find that I haven't done anything. No points. No damage.
I get more ammo then do it again on the same ship. Still no effect.
It was as if he was using some invulnerability cheat. All of a sudden, my teammate shoots at me and does damage.
It was then that I realized I was playing as a Royal ship rather than a Pirate ship. I had been shooting at my own teammate!
Y'see, playing Pirates for hours does stuff to your brain! Try to switch sides regularly so your mind doesn't get set in shoot that color ship.
