I've just posted the lyrics to 2 songs --Till There Was You by the Beatles and Some Enchanted Evening by Jay and the Americans -- which were orignally part of Broadway musicals.

can you name another top 40 song that started life in a Broadway musical?

I'm putting my thinking cap on......do I get credit for naming the shows those songs come from???

I don't know if this counts but many songs from shows made it to the top 40......the versions from original soundtracks......like "What I Did For Love" and "Cabaret"......

I was lucky enough to hear Rebecca Luker sing "Till There Was You" in the revival of "The Music Man" 2 years ago....the original artist was Barbara Cook.

soundtrack versions get 1/2 credit -- it is top 40, but after all, it's from the show itself, not another artist or group.

I saw "Music Man" with Luker twice -- lovely. (though I liked her better in "Sound of Music"). I saw Barbara Cook in concert a few months ago at Lincoln Center, but she was doing mostly Sondheim and didn't sing anything from "Music Man".

Darn, these boards are slow tonight!!!! "Some Enchanted Evening" was sung by Enzio Pinza in South Pacific starting in 1949...(before my time!)

Was "Street Where You Live" ever on the Top 40? I thought there was a popular non-Broadway version of it...long shot.

"Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" was a number one hit for the Platters. It was originally from the Jerome Kern musical, "Roberta".

Here is an obscure one for ya Briar---if anyone can get this you can

The 80's song----------"One Night in Bangkok"

which show, who originally sang it, it what movie did he appear as a very famous womens hubby

One Night in Bangkok was by Murray Head and I think it was from a play entitled "Chess". I kinda remember him in a movie...but I have to think some more about that one.

I saw "Chess" on Broadway, but thought the London version (I had the CD) was better.

Barry Manilow and Barbra Streisand each did a cover of "Memory" from "Cats." both were top 40 hits.

Now, are we forgetting the obvious? This IS the Disboards for heaven's sake.

"Written In the Stars" was performed on Broadway in Aida by Heather Hedley and (UGH!) I can't remember his name. Elton John wrote it with Tim Rice and made it a top 40 hit.

This was the only Broadway musical that I have seen so far that still had its original cast. AND... they even showed up for the performance. I hate getting my hopes up only to find that an understudy is performing for that show.

Hello Dolly was a big hit for Louis Armstrong (and for Herb Alpert too).

to my knowledge, heather is no longer with the show...which is sad cuz i really wanted to see her in a show on broadway!! she does have a cd coming out this week though, if anyone's interested...i went to high school with her!!

hmmm...i'm a broadway musical nut and i just can't think of any songs!! lol...

Was Can You Feel The Love Tonight in the Broadway version of Lion King? If so, I would think the Elton John version was in the top 40.

Were any of the songs from "Guys and Dolls" hits for Frank Sinatra? Maybe "Luck Be A Lady Tonight"?

I just thought of a bunch -- "Mamma Mia" is on Broadway and has a soundtrack of ABBA Hits. "Dancing Queen", "Waterloo", "Take A Chance On Me."

(Although I'm sure that's not what you meant.)

Just thought of another one -- there was a pop song out recently called "Dance the Night Away", which clearly "borrowed" From Hernando's Hideaway" from "The Pajama Game."

Are you thinking of "Dance With Me" sung by Debelah Morgan? Yeah it does sound like Hernando's Hideaway doesn't it?

Indeed Satchmo had a #1 hit with Hello Dolly. Herb Alpert and his boys recorded it too, but I don't know if it went to the top 40. Striesand had a top 5 hit with "People" from Funny Girl at about the same time as Louis's hit on Dolly.

Thanks for reminding me...didn't Streisand also have a hit with "Somewhere" from West Side Story on her Broadway album?
