New Furnace Cost

How do I know if I got a good price? I have a quote that seems reasonable to me, but I have no idea how much they cost!!

We just had to replace our HVAC unit the week after thanksgiving. Ours is a 4 ton self contained unit. We have gas heat. It cost $6700.

Thats a good point. There are TONs of variables even depending on what part of the country you are in. I would get a couple quotes.

gas forced air. 2000 sq ft house, 96% efficiency. Not changing out the AC unit. Don't you get a tax credit or something for installing high efficiency units?

Our neighbors spent about 4K on one... I have no idea on what type of specs though, could be comparing apples to water melons.

We have a rental and the furnance went out Saturday, it was gas 80,000 for aprox.800 sq ft. Our first estimate was $2800 and the second was $1950, both were well known heating places so there is a difference, get at least 2 quotes!

It expired the first of the year, don't know about this year. Was $150 or $200 depending on what blower was in the furnace.

Normal upflow easy in & out 1 day job 3 to 4K no extras is what I'd get for your job. Add duct mods a high end air cleaner for another 800. Add a humidifier or a higher end furnace maybe replace the water heater at the same time (very common) could be at an easy 7 to 8K. Lots of variables.

I'm not getting rich on those prices either, 90% of those prices are my out of pocket costs.

All the HVAC companies that advertise are listing furnaces for $3995 installed. No idea if that is natural gas or electric or if it matters

Check with your local and state for tax credits as well. We got a new system a year ago.

We ended up qualifying for a state program here in NJ, details were found on the NJNG website. (NJ natural gas). It got us new high efficient HVAC, new hot water heater, and they installed it all differently to have the house now energy star certified. (furnace no longer vents thru the roof). The also put insulation up in the attic and reinstalled the dryer vent system. In all, $15,000 worth of work, for $10,000. The $5,000 balance is a grant. The $10,000 is repaid monthly, INTEREST FREE. So it costs us about $80-85 a month.

And here is the VERY best part. House is more comfortable, temperature is more consistent in the house. And our bills are considerably LESS. The AC bill was 1/2 as much as before.

Anything that anyone on here can tell you will be like comparing apples to hand grenades. The only way to find out if you're getting a good price is to get several estimates from other companies.

Definitely get multiple quotes for reference prices. Sometimes one place is really busy and so prices the work high temporarily. Some utility companies also do installs so you could get a quote from them too.
