Here is my scenario:

We just purchased a DVC contract with 100 points that must be used by the end of July.

It is a 150 point contract with an August UY. We have all 150 points for 2014 plus 70 points that were banked from 2013.

I would like to make a reservation for a 2 bedroom villa at WDW in June. IF I can get this I would have to "borrow" points from 2014 since 100 points is obviously not enough :-)

So, for arguments sake, let's say the req'd number of points is 210.

I would be using the 100 points that are getting ready to expire plus borrowing 110 points.

My questions:

Would the borrowed points be 2014 points or would the 70 points banked from 2013 be part of the 110 points I borrow?

If our travel party changes and I need to "downgrade" to a smaller unit, will I lose the points? If not, what happens to them?

Thanks!

once you bank or borrow pts, that is FINAL.

so you can borrow current 2014 UY pts, but any banked 2013 UY pts must remain in the 2014 UY.

you would not lose them instantly but you cannot bank them into the next UY in this case, so you'd have to use the extra pts for a stay by the end of july 2014 (for yourself, friends/family or renters) or they disappear into the void after july 31.

edited to add: this gives you a picture of why you generally do not want to be traveling late in your UY.

In your example, you'd be using 100 points from 2013 and 110 points from 2014 to make your June reservation. You'd then be left with 40 2014 points and the 70 banked 2013 points. The 70 points would need to be used by July 31, 2015, while the 40 points could be banked into your 2015 use year.

Thanks so much! We will normally travel in December but we have the 100 points that were part of the contract we just purchased and need to be used so we are going to try to pull off a last minute trip this summer...I wouldn't normally cut it this close to our UY for sure!

I guess if our plans changed we would just have a longer visit at WDW in a studio...awwww that would be horrible! Haha! ;)

Just be aware that if your plans changed, there may not be a studio available for a longer stay!

A better option would be to book whatever you can with the expiring points and pay cash for the remainder of the stay. That ways if your plans changed, you can cancel the cash reservation up to 5 days.
