New DVC Member--Can I Still Do This?

We just joined DVC in the middle of April. We purchased 270 points at BLT. After gaining knowledge from these forums, I requested that we change our UY from February to September. My guide sent out new documents. We currently have those documents in our possession and have not signed them.

We've made two sets of reservations and have borrowed some points from our next UY.

After reading more, my wife and I are now considering that we would prefer to have two 160 point contracts instead of one 270 point contract. Would it be possible to change this? I'm hoping the fact that we'd like to add 50 points might make it possible. Thanks for your help.

Yes, you can make whatever changes you want to your purchase and contracts, as long as you do it before the contracts close. I had to have my contracts rewritten 4 times!!!!

Since you haven't signed them, contract your guide and ask that they be changed. Mine was always very accomodating to me, especially since it resulted in my buying more points!!!

You would have to ask your guide..
I never heard of (not that I know it all) DVC allowing a UY swap, but I guess since your contract does not begin until July (BLT occupiable)...
Chances are, your existing reservations will technically have to be cancelled with either new contract (unless you somehow keep the same member #), you could ask your guide to honor those existing reservatons for the added 50 points...

Buck, I could be totally mistaken about this, but I *believe* that, since there is a second "tier" of incentives at 200 points, that you would have to break your contract into a 200 and a 70 point contract. Either way, you're still breaking it up, but I think I recall my Guide saying that you had to hit the 200 point mark and then break up from there. Since we only bought 220 points, it wasn't worth the hassle for us at that point so we didn't explore our options further, but just keep in mind that that might be the case with your contract. Also, your member number (and thus your reservations) should stay intact, but definitely confirm with your Guide so he/she can make sure to keep an eye on it and get it transferred immediately if they issue a new member number. Either way, congratulations!! :goodvibes

Since they are new members, I don't see why they can't ask for a different UY while asking for an increase in the points. They haven't signed contracts yet and my guide told me that contracts can be rewritten anytime before closing. When the new incentives came out April 1st, there were a lot of buyers who called and had contracts redone with the new deals.

When I just went through all of my changes, I had reservations in place and they were all transferred over without any issues. I did not lose any of the reservations that were in place.

Good point, Crystal, about the incentives. I have heard, however, of members who have gotten DVC to give them the higher incentives based on the total points so there is a chance, they would let them do 160 and 160 and still get the 200 point level of incentives.

Yes, I totally agree that the OP should definitely ask his Guide, but I know my Guide told me that I could only split my contracts up after 200 points due to the incentive tier at 200 points. But, if they will let him do it at 160/160 (or, maybe even better, 160/100/60 - LOL), that's even better for him!!

Thanks for the information. One point of clarification: I already switched my UY. That resulted in the second set of documents. I'm all set with the UY, but I'm thinking that I would like to have two separate 160 point contracts instead of one 270 point contract. It will give me a few more points which would be helpful and it also makes it easy to divide between my two sons someday. I figure DVC might be willing to make the change since it's more money for them. Of course, I will ask my guide, but I wanted to know if anyone else had a similar experience. Thanks.

Yeah, you scratch their back; they scratch yours. Good luck and please come back and post what happens - - I'm curious now!

Since you haven't signed your contracts you currently don't have anything binding with DVC so yes, you can still change the deal.

Even if you had signed as long as you were within your 10 day recission you could change - it just might require formal cancellation of your first contract in that situation.

I have done both a UY change and point change even after signing - just not after closing.

hmmmm this has me thinking should I do two different contracts as well. We just purchased 240 at AKV.

Just wondering on how much of a pain it would be to book at 11 mos and then trying to book the rest of the trip at 7 mos with the rest of the points. Or do you borrow from the next yr and bank the other points.

Any suggestions?

Unless your planning on buying at two different resorts you have the 11 month priority with both contracts. Are you thinking about changing to AKV and something else?

Well, I am guessing I would purchase for two different resorts just to have the variety and booking option of 11 mos out. I have some things to think about this evening before I call my guide in the a.m.

Gotcha! Yes, in that case many people will use banking and/or borrowing for the 11 month booking priority and switch between the resorts every other year if your plan is a WDW trip once per year. OR - you could do split stays each year between the resorts if you don't mind moving. Either way I would try to make ressies in the home priority booking period and then you could always try to change part or all of it at 7 months.

I know that Disney will allow you to do a 160 and 80 with your 240 points at AKV. And some have still gotten all the incentives that go along with the higher point levels (though you might have to push your guide to take it to a supervisor to get approval).

I am not sure how it would work to do two separate resorts, since your first contract of 160 would be the master contract and the next one would be the add on contract.

And, sometimes things that are reported as not possible, can be done--if you can get the managers to approve it.

Good luck!!

We did a 100 point add on at BLT and split it into two 50 point contracts. We still got the 100 point incentives (this was at the travel show). I'm sure they can do it, and I bet they won't give you much problem about it especially since your initial contract meets the minimum (160) and you are going to end up with 50 more points... it's win/win for them!

Good luck!

So it seems probable that I will be able to move from a 270 point contract to two 160 point contracts. I calculate that as an additional $4,800 to do this. Are there any other things I should consider about whether or not to do this? I see the up front cost and the increase in MF's. But I also think that I will have two smaller contracts that would be easier to sell if needed. And hopefully, we would keep them and give one to each of our two sons. Thanks for the feedback!

Buck, since you're asking for feedback, I'm just curious about whether you really *need* the extra points. In other words, will 270 not do it for you or are you trying to buy enough at the outset so you'll never have to add? You can easily add on points at a later time if you need to at 25 point increments. That said, if you really want to buy 320, if it were me, I'd break them into 3 separate contracts: 160/100/60. Remember that for resale purposes, the 100 point or less contracts are what draw people. Also, that way if you find that 320 point are too many, you can sell off just the 60 point contract and still be at 260. Again, the above is just my personal opinion, and it sounds like you really are looking at every angle here, which is good. :flower3:

Crystal makes a good point. I'd love some additional feedback. My original thought was that we do need more points (I'm already borrowing points and we haven't even gone as DVC members yet!) and that with our two sons we'd like to be able to divide up the contracts evenly. I think Crystal is right on about having the three contracts for reasons that she has stated. Again, feedback on those particular perspectives or anything else I haven't thought of would be appreciated. Thanks!

on 5-1-09, I purchased 240 points (BLT) from DVC. I had them split into the three contracts being, 100, 70, 70. The reason is if I had to sell some of them I could do that without selling it all and if I one day deed some of the points to my children. Disney did it without any probelms and it actually saved me a $100.00 because the "closing fee" is $350.00 but when you break the contracts up it brings the fee to $250.00. Like everyone says smaller contracts sell fast and for a little more than the big contracts in the event you do need to sell.
