Hi Mouseteacher - Actually, given the choice, I would not voluntarily swim in January - but the look on my kids face always convinces me to go with them for a quick dip. During our last January trip, my then 5 year old DS convinced me to go for a late night trip to that "bubbly warm small pool" (aka hot tub) at the CR. Disney does not keep the hot tubs too hot, more like a warm bath, and the two of us just hung out there as he giggled that he was in a pool and it was dark out. We got out to watch the electrical water parade and then ran back to the room shivering. He included our hot tub trip in the journal he did for his kindergarten class and still talks about it.

On topic -- The Swan has a lovely hot tub I think, although we did not get a chance to try it out.

I am still inundated... next year will hire a CPA if I don't get a better system!

Hello all posters and lurkers alike.

DF Thanks for the info about CL...that's what I thought...could you tell me what floor and room you had and if you were able to see illuminations at night from the windows in your room?? I believe the East does face Epcot...right?

I also agree that every family, child, and financial situation is different and will dictate what the "car" status is when a child is old enough to drive.. Well I was able to be given a TR6 when I was sixteen that will not be the case for my kids.....there are 4 of them in 6 yrs....and the first 3 were in 3.5 yrs....they will be lucky to share a car if the help with there insurance....I just don't have the financial luxury my parents had....

Lauren I like you to know that I really enjoyed reading your posts about your trip with your mother in WDW...how special that must have been....I'm hoping my Stepmother (currently struggling with Breast/bone cancer for the second time) will be physically able to join my family in Dec for a few days. My dad keeps saying we will have to see....things are sort of gray right now as to whether she will make it that long...I'm sure she will surprise everybody and live another 20 yrs....:D :D :D

and PS....I wouldn't be swimming with my lovely children in Dec....too cold...I'm a wimp....LOL

I have my computer back! No more fighting for time on one family computer when I have no time to wait!

On topic>> The chocolate croissants in the club level lounge are absolutely delicious! Be sure to ask for some bottled water to take to the parks.

Now on to the good stuff!
WOW, lots of posts! On the car issue, we didn't buy dd a new car, but we did buy her what we considered a much nicer car than either of us drove at her age! She has a 98 red escort GT, and the cell phone to go with it. Her cell phone is pay as you go, though, since we knew if it wasn't we'd be paying way too much. We usually pay, as long as a reasonable time has gone between payments. Like JGates area, there are deer everywhere! With me being in the wrong county most of the time, it was impossible to get her to her afterschool activities and cheerleading. I am home maybe 15 minutes a day before I hope back out the door for DS's sports. His football is local, and I am able to drop off and come home and get a few things done. Hockey is anywhere from 45 to an hour and a half away depending on where the games are. I don't want her driving to hockey, yet, as that is going into the city/construction, and not near a "mall" she normally knows the area for.

On Disney topic>> Has anyone else tried www.live365.com? I can finally play the stations w/o my computer crashing! I am on "Buena Vista Radio" and currently listening to the church music by the stave church in Norway. I found a good way to search is just put "Disney" for the search term, and select from there.

Purses>> I am in total awe of those purses. I even had a dream about them last night! Thank you again for sharing your collection with us!

*room wave to everyone!* I need to reread and really catch up!

Mouseteacher~You always make me feel better about things. Thank you, so very much. ^_^ I can assure you, if we had another (especially close together) child...the "car" issue would be another story indeed. DD is practical, and has decided on the VW beetle (almost 100%). It gets GREAT gas mileage, is low-maintenance, and has a high safety rating. Besides that...it is comfy to ride in (she took me for numerous "test drives" yesterday, making me feel like the child and she the parent...w/o her even noticing!), and cute as a BUG! (LOL). I love your perspective, "necessity vs. luxury", which I agree with all the way. DD has so many "obligations" from Steel Drums to Volunteer work, to clubs, sporting events, etc. It would be much nicer if she were able to go directly from school, instead of having DH or myself drive to the school, then to the event, etc. It just seems so much more logical and practical. I also, do not want any of the headache or hassles associated with a used car. She will be in college for a minimum of four years...then possibly 2 more, with even MORE if she pursues her Doc., so the BUG has to LAST! I feel confident this car could do 10 years w/o a sweat. So...from our viewpoint, it seems to be a steadfast investment.

Our neighbors refuse to buy their DD a car (new or used). She is the same age as my DD, and they also have a 6 YO. She is going to drive the 1985 Nissan Sentra they have kept in the drive, rotting, for the past 7+ years we have lived here. She is so unhappy about this, as it has no A/C, no power steering, and no ABS or Airbags (unsafe). She would like something newer, but they do not feel the same. They are well-to-do, so $$ has nothing to do with it. They just feel she should not "receive" a nice car, as neither of them did when they were her age.

We have talked about this, as they have asked about our DD's vehicle "situation". I feel badly when DD drives up to the house with DH, to show "mom" (aka=moi) a nice car they are "test-driving", as I know this young girl can see them from her home.:( But...DD tells her friend she should be happy to have a car at all. Some young adults do not get ANY vehicle, and must work to buy their own. Yes, DD wants to pay for the insurance and even the car. Yet, we want her to concentrate on school at present, and school-related activities. Her GF works at Red Lobster as a hostess, and doesn't get home until 11:30 some school eves! NO WAY. Not with H & AP classes. She needs to focus, and also have some "free" time.

I too, LOVE Annette. She lives in So. Cal (central valley area of Shafter), and is doing okay. Her health steadily declines due to her disease, but she remains in good spirits (from what I hear). Remember her and Frankie, and all the Beach movies? They are true classics!

I swim Year-round out here. I guess I've acclimated to the ocean being FREEZING, and just jump in the pool and "warm-up". The air temps never get that low, and the water is heated. Try the Jacuzzi in the winter months at the DOLPHIN/SWAN...very refreshing.

Thanks again. Get some rest...you begin your THIRD week tomorrow!

zurgswife~I'll PM you with the suite details. YES...EAST WING directly faces EPCOT!!

Thanks for the kind words about the "car" situation. Whew...I would not even be thinking of buying a CAR for DD, if she had another sibling "close" in age. ^_^

Disbug~You poor kid! You're still not finished? I hope you get through this by tonight. Sending you extra pixie dust~**********************************************!

#1hockeymom~Mmmm...Chocolate croissants on Club Level! You have me wanting some right now. Those are the BEST treats there in the am. And especially LOW CAL, as they use dark chocolate...LOL. :p He He...DD knows the MALL area well? Cute. I like the C-phone "pay as you go", but in La La Land...most that "work", where you can actually place the call and have it go through, are all contracts. We are w/AT&T~Verizon. The phones do everything imaginable...take pics, check/send email, PDA, etc.
All this, in the size of a microchip! Our phones aren't much larger.

I LOVE live 365 radio, and listen to it all the time. Great Disney tunes.

I'm glad you liked the purses, and other stuff. A dream? HEY...A DREAM IS A WISH, YOUR HEART MAKES! KEEP DREAMING, as THE DREAMS THAT YOU WISH WILL COME TRUE.

Here's some of my FAVORITE KB's...to help you drift off this eve...

well, hopefully my insurance agent doesn't read this!!!

Just because he is insured on the oldest, cruddiest vehicle doesn't mean he drives it! (l.o.l.)

Other than the herds of deer around here (I'm talking about being able to see 35 on one side of the road and 25 on the other at the same time!!! - I keep hoping that mad deer disease will get into our area!), I have complete faith in his driving! At least they classified him as 'married' during his college years because he can't take a car there so rates were better yet!

I can't conceive dropping $80 grand on a car for a kid......Do you know how many nights we could stay at the Swan for that???:p :p :p :p

Watching Conan O'Brien's anniversary show......cracking me up!

Here's what we did about cars....my dd got a used red mustang conv. for her 16th because 1)her mom and dad loved it and it was a great price 2)she is spoiled rotten
She drove it until we thought it was unsafe, and then we found a 98 Breeze. She drove that until she went to college and we didn't think she needed it while in a dorm on campus, so her bro got to drive it to HS and all over during that time. She got her car back her last two years, as she was in an apt and bro was in a dorm. Worked great for a while. Then bro moved to an apt, dd graduated and so we found a good used Impala, which he loves and still drives. He is spoiled rotten also. Amazing that spoiled rotten kids can turn out so well! Hmmm. We are still paying insurance and they help when they can. They also have cell phones, which we got on family plan when they started driving for my peace of mind. We also got the national plan so we can call anywhere from anywhere, but only have so many minutes per month, but plenty. It is the only phone we have for long distance. Cingular(dh works for SBC) It has worked for us and I think everyone has to decide to do what they feel comfortable with, but I hope every parent remembers that driving is a risk and you don't want your child out there in a piece of junk. OK, my $.02 is over!

On topic......wish I were going to the Swan this Christmas. There are good rates all over WDW resorts and the S/D for over Christmas day and all you need is to be checked in by that date. Love WDW at Christmas. AND yes, we swim in Dec when we can!

Hey Lou, where is your sorority bro avatar? Come on now, I know you can do it.

jgates...can't believe the herds of deer. I heard they were around Chicago, but wow, what a danger.

DF....And the purses...I had no idea. Have never seen those. I live a sheltered life. But I know Annette and Frankie. She was my favorite mouseketeer too. I have Frankie's autograph from a long time ago in Chicago.

 Night all. Busy day tomorrow.

Hi there.
I just booked the Dolphin on Hotwire for $111 Night. Did I get an okay deal. I was just adding on a couple of days to our vacation starting the 31st. So I booked two nights the 29th and the 30th. I know this is "holiday season" so I thought that might be the best I could do. The ASM was $124, so I thought this was a better deal than that.

Try these on 365

D-Magic (RadioCIHL1)
Florida Project Radio
E Ticket Radio
Park Hopper Radio
Mouseinfo Radio
Sorcerer Radio: WDW
Radio Buena Vista
Disney Music
Laughingplace Radio
Disney Rob Radio Live
MouseWorld Radio 1
MouseWorld Radio 2
MouseWorld Radio 3

They are all excellent. I play them all the time even at work. I drive the people around me nuts. Because, they say how can you go there so often and still listen to that all the time. They just DO NOT GET THE MAJIC like we all do. Anyway, ENJOY!

Oh yeah, right now I am listening to the Old Horizons ride "CHRYSTALS SCENE"

Hi Everyone,
We did swim this past Jan as we had some very nice warm weather while in FL. You really have to prepare for all kinds of weather in Jan. You can need gloves and a jacket one day and shorts the next. Fortunately we stay long enough to usually hit some nice weather.

DS drove a new Acura while in high school and college. We also wanted him to have a reliable/safe car. The Acura was just about matienance free! He sold it in 2001 and bought a new M3 BMW. He works full time and goes to grad school at night. He graduated 4th in class from high school and recieved "most deserving senior boy" award. He is now a scientist and soon to have his masters. He has no plan to stop there! Biogen is going to let him do research while he gets his Phd.

I have 3 more years before DD gets her license. Today (sunday) she went on a 3 hr bike trip with her friend. She is very reliable but I still worried. I know that all of us worry when are children drive off, weather in a car or on a bike! But we have to give them wings.....

 to Disbug, Mouseteacher, Ozzie, DF, Hockeymom and everyone! Have a great week!

Muffy

LadyRose ... you got a great deal ... good job!:D You might want to join the Starwood Preferred Guest Program and you can accumulate SPG points for your stay. It is a great program, look for it at www.SPG.com

Have a magical trip! I think you will love the Dolphin! We all do on this thread:D

I thought I'd pop in quickly. I have a week full of nearly all day meetings so I doubt I'll see much of DIS this week. This thread will be up to 50 pages by the time I get back!

Lou - you must have a whole database of pictures indexed by topic. You throw them in like verbal quips. You've got a great sense of humor. And don't worry about age, I probably have a few years on everyone here. (My username is not my age, but it's close).

#1HM- I love Florida Project Radio on live365 - park quality sound without the crowd noise - I wonder where they got the music from? I once heard the whole "Small World" and it felt like I was on it, becuase it went from one land ot another. (I could even see the mysterious green door to the right). It's great - but we block streaming video and audio at work (it's a large company and it would choke our network) so I can't listen at work.

ozzie - well, maybe the Cards can help the next series. If Houston keeps this up, I'd have to say (reluctantly) that they deserve it. Cubs should have done better earlier in the season.

DF99 - we bought our oldest a car just after he turned 16. We had two, but one was very old and one was a mini-van (not cool). It was his choice (within our budget); and we did it more for the safety and peace of mind. It was a Pontiac Sunfire; later, when #2 son got his license we bought our oldest a Blazer and gave the Sunfire to him. Now my daughter (the video producer) drives the Sunfire and we bought my #2 son a Grand Am for his 18th b-day. Actually, the cars belong to us, and the kids know that, but unless there is a real need, they kind of "belong" to them. We will probably buy one more new one when my daughter turns 18. After that, it's our turn again!

We do this mainly because the kids are very responsible and do not take it for granted. But also, living in the 'burbs we all need a vehicle (except me - I take the train in to downtown Chicago). Well, certainly not "need", but it has it's advantages. And I feel like you - it's better to have a new car; I had a "beater" when in college and it broke down in the winter in the most remote areas. We didn't want to have to worry about car breakdowns - it's tough enough when they go out late at night.

Let's see - what to say for an on-topic post? I wish I was relaxing at the CL enjoying Mama T's hospitality instead of heading off to the first of a week's full of all day meetings. Oh well, I'll be in my second favorite city in a couple of weeks (In case you've forgotten, Mouseteacher, that's Boston).

Have a great week - I'll pop back in when I can.

I need to be clued in here :

I don't know what website this is ? Can someone help me out, I cannot believe I have been missing this :)

On topic: The Dolphin has a seperate check in for Starwood members. There was no wait when I checked us in and was very efficient.

BTW: To try and answer Bob's question. I was an original lurker on the original thread, but I don't believe I posted until the 2nd. thread, but not sure. The originals that I can remember were Dreamflight, DisNurse, KellieR and Loving the Mouse that are still with us. Then there was "Jen" and I believe "Happy trails" but we have not heard from them in ages. Any thoughts on this Dreamflight ?

Have a great week everyone :)

On-topic: Did you know that there are rental car agencies at the Dolphin? It is worth checking into if you want to take a day trip or drive yourself to/from the airport. Watch out about refilling it though. One time I heard a discussion at the return counter in the airport from a Dolphin customer who was disputing the nubmer of gallons it would take to drive to MCO from the Dolphin based on actual mileage. That was one smart Dolphin stayer who knew what he was talking about. They reduced his fee! :D

Other Random Car Thoughts:
I didn't get a car until my junior year in college. I didn't need one prior to that but was moving off campus so that I could cross register at another college. I bought a used Datsun 210 Hatchback with cassette player and sunroof. It was an awesome car and I sold it 4 years later for $100. I think it had 120,000+ miles by then. The front seat was tilted from the previous owner always turning to talk to her friends in the back seat. I was lol about KelliR's car.......as my friend had a yellow bomb (something like a dodge dart I think) It got us to where we needed to go in High School and I'm sure she equipped it with the finest 8 track player that money could buy. :D We'd all chip in for gas, and away we'd go.

My son won't be getting his license for another year and a half or so. I always tell him that our neighbor's car is sitting in the driveway next door..........just waiting for him. It's a Red Ford Tempo............probably 10 years old! He said he could probably put a nice stereo and speakers in it. I don't know what we'll do about a car. We live in a rural area so it's a good 20 minutes for him to get to/from school. So, whatever we get, it will be a family car that he will use. I'd also like it to have 4wd because we live in the snow belt. He will have to help with insurance though. His sister will drive a year later. That just complicates matters but we'll deal with it when the time comes. My plan is to not let them take their cars to college. Our neighbors made a deal with their kids. If they stayed home, they'd get a new car to drive to college. If they went away, they wouldn't. And, when my youngest starts driving in 11 years (yikes!) - who knows what we'll do by then!

DF...I'll await you PM thank you...PS we are out of Soap :) I'm loving those little purses they are fantastic.

Ozziewags....I was able to get my dad a room while we are there for a few days at a AP rate of $150 with view upgrade(not sure what this is) not bad for christmas I thought..

Ladyrose...WOW Hotwire $111 that sounds like a great price..mine was $150....I'll have to check out the cancelation policy..I need one I can cancel late without penalty. My stepmother is very ill and might not be able to make the trip...

Bobump...got to figure out how 365 works...great songs listed..

ww52...I feel your pain..I read 24 pages this weekend to catch up...

I am on "Buena Vista Radio" and currently listening to the church music by the stave church in Norway. I found a good way to search is just put "Disney" for the search term, and select from there.

I'm listening to "Mouseworld Radio" as I type....I love www.live365.com :) had NO idea there are so many other choices for stations, though....I just have 2 in my pre-sets. I'll have to check that out!

on topic: check out my countdown....I'm going to the Dolphin in 12 sleeps!

"AMEN"~My "core" sentiments exactly. Thank you, Ozzie, for your wisdom, thoughts and experience.

Sheltered? Conan O'Brian? Those two are definitely "Oxymorons"
(LOL)!!

jgates~LOL! :teeth:

LadyRose~Astounding deal! I just don't think these will be available for long, or certainly not year-round. That's a GREAT DEAL for the Dolphin, anytime of the year. You posted yourself the ASM was $124, and I certainly think the Dolphin is better than the ASM (JMOHO)! Kudos to you...for a great find.

Bobump~To those naysayers at work...I say, "kill them with kindness, and a large dose of laughingplace radio on live365!" When you have live365....the MAGIC NEVER ENDS!
Thanks...for all the info. ^_^

Muffy~You sweet girl...I worry too. DD used to ride her bike almost daily to the park a mile down the road. I would stress while she was gone, until she arrived and called. Then...I'd worry (especially after dark) until she was home. DD drove the truck last eve, and when she left...I watched her drive away. In fact, I literally RAN upstairs to watch her drive by off the back balcony (I've got it BAD). I told myself repeatedly (you have to let her go...let her fly), but the words seemed empty, and lacked the consolation I felt they should have delivered.

DH was doing some things at work. So alone, I waited. I never knew...the sound of the GARAGE DOOR OPENING was SUCH a LOVELY SOUND! Like a symphony, singing: "She's HOME...She's HOME!" The funniest part is....she never knew, for one moment, I was worried. Good Lord, is this what my parents/mother went through when I would dance out the door to drive off into the sunset with my friends for a weekend eve of fun? They too...never let on one bit. I feel I've entered the realm of a "SECRET SOCIETY", one where adults worry over their young, without revealing the anxiety. Whew...now I know why we AGE so rapidly when our children reach this plateau. We KEEP IT ALL INSIDE, and SMILE on the OUTSIDE! How much longer must I do this? Is there another plateau somewhere, where I may remove the SMILING MASK, and expose my furrowed brow and wrinkled forehead? LOL....I believe this one never ends.

Wow...Your DS is doing extremely well. I recall the accolades he's achieved, but didn't know about the Beemer (M3). He must be feeling independent and accomplished. You definitely have reason to be proud!

ww52~AGE? What's that? Here on the DIS, and especially on this thread...we are ALL the SAME AGE==YOUNG (at heart). :)
"Fairy tales will come true, it will happen to you...if you're YOUNG AT HEART..." ^_^

Oh, takin' the train to DT Chicago...what a nice way to commute. Mass transit is a foreign concept here in the LAND OF CARS. Everyone in California has their own car. Even with the introduction of the "car-pool" lanes years ago, (which are empty), folks STILL refuse to relinquish driving their own cars (alone). San Francisco does much better with public transit than any other city in the state. Still...they pale in comparison to your city, Boston or NY.

Thanks for the info w/regards to vehicles. I drove a used car in College, and experienced some trouble with "battery" failure, etc. It was always a hassle, waiting around for AAA to help. Most of the time, I relied upon the kindness of strangers. Yet, after reading about the recent lawsuit involving AAA, and the details of the matter, I feel even more indemnified about the "new" car decision. Some strangers, especially nowadays, are anything but "kind", (even though our children in their naive state of distress may believe this to be the case). I appreciate your input.

MOM POPPINS~ You are correct on your list! I forgot you were a former "lurker" too! I'm so bold...I jumped right into Posting! Yes...you mentioned many originals, and can add KIMMAR (before she began the WL thread). Jen was a hoot, and Happytrails pops in once in a while (but I have not heard from him in ages either).

What's your take/ideas on the "CAR" thing? :)

YES...I too LOVE the STARWOOD check-in desk at the Dolphin. It makes it so much faster to be able to bypass the counter and check-in at this convenient location!

marymrg~I use the National/Alamo Car Rental service located near the lobby of the Dolphin (across from the Disney Ticket counter), at least 5 times per summer! We love the convenience and service. Be sure to say hello to "Melissa" (usually works M-F), the National associate manning this counter for more than a decade~!

What's the logic behind the "Not having the car for college?" I'm not getting it. I used my car in college all the time, for a NUMBER of things. Looking back, I would have been LOST without it (or certainly hindered beyond belief). It was my own personal "link" to my home. Whenever I sat behind the wheel, I could literally "hear" the voices of my mom and dad (telling me to drive safely, and their "I LOVE YOU" seemed to echo all over the interior). I also felt "connected/closer" to them, just by sitting in the car. It was almost a santuary, a place of comfort and peace. It would permit me to leave the world of school, and enter the REAL world. I know...it probably sounds corny and sentimental to most of you. But, for me...it worked wonders.

zurgswife~Would you like another shipment of the suds? I'll pm you asap. I have to RUN right now (literally), but will post when I return.

The baby ducks are growing so fast. I'm reminded of the solo baby w/mommy this past summer at the DOLPHIN. We would watch them each day, outside the window and on our way to the friendship dock. She would "huddle" over the baby, and protect it from any/all threats and danger. When the storms approached, she would "usher" the tiny ball of fluff under the nearest shrub, with tender loving care. Nature, is such a wonderful place to see reflections of LOVE and NURTURING.

mousteacher~Where are you? You must be having a BUSY morning, as I'm sure all MONDAYS are in your profession!

I managed to escape the meeting to check email and thought I'd check the DIS also.

Mom Poppins - hope you got enough info on live365 from the other posts. I think you need a high speed internet connection for it ot work well. (Anyone have success with a dial up connection?) This is a must for any Disney addict!

Off topic, but I'm curious. I usually read/post early morning and lunch since I rarely get any computer time at home. Only one of our computers has internet access and the kids (including our 21 year old) take up most of the time; plus there is much to do in the evening anyway - and I start dozing off earlier and earlier it seems. (DF - even though I'm young at heart!)

Anyway, I've thought of setting up a wireless network, but the only other computers are in the kid's rooms (and there really is no room to set up another one anywhere else. So similar to DF's question on cars - what about internet access for the kidsin their rooms? I trust them, but they are normal kids and I wonder if the temptation to explore would be too great? We've already had a long talk and an "uninstall" session on music file sharing.

OK - back to the meeting. On topic - by this time we'd be back at the hotel after a great morning at one of the parks. Which reminds me that walking to Epcot from S/D is always faster than taking the boat. If you're at the Swan, then coming back we take boat to the Boardwalk, then walk.

Later,
Bill
