NEW...DOLPHIN/SWAN..."questions and answers"...tips and hints!

I knew I left something out in my last post! Welcome to the thread Lauren!

Lauren>> I do hope for your mother's recovery. Cancer is scary and tough for all those involved. I will add her to my prayers, along with your family. I hope your trip happens and that you all have a wonderful time!

I love the grumpy dance! I bet it does work!! I have done something similar on a much smaller scale in my classroom and I think I might need to expand it to your "dance". :)

Our family is up and out after a quick bite at the Royal Beach CL and introducing Mama T to DD8, DD2, and DH who arrived yesterday. We're taking the boat to MGM Studios, but I keep wearing a path between our room and the elevators "remembering things I'd forgotten"! (I still end up forgetting the Ponchos and the squirt bottle fans! Thank goodness we didn't need the ponchos, the fans would have been nice, though..) Just as we get outside, lo and behold a boat is waiting! We wave our arms and run to get aboard! They wave their arms, honk their horn and depart! No matter, another boat is right behind and we are the only family to board! A private cruise to MGM!
fb703991.jpg
We wait for the rest of the family to arrive at Guest Relations where we will exchange our vouchers for Annual Passes. DH is able to get DD2 her morning bottle on a bench in the shade.

The day before during our "errands" we dropped off a schedule for the week so everyone would know which parks, what days, where to be when, etc.. and allow those who sleep in to catch up later! We also got a GAC (guest assistance card) for DD2 since she is in a wheelchair stroller. *(These really are priceless for families with disabled members. They allow the strollers to be entered into attractions which usually exclude them and also admit up to 6 guests in the Fast Pass line.)

Our group of 15 is supposed to consist of my crew plus Disney Parents (mine), DB, SIL, DNiece9, DNeph9, DNiece5, DS, BIL and DNeph13.
Everyone has 2 way radios programmed to the same frequency, so to test the waters I call out "Hello,Hello! Disney Family" and shocked to receive a response, They are HERE, *(except for last 3 who are late sleepers)! It's about 8:35 AM. This is GOOD! We manage to get separated again after getting through the turnstiles. But I find SIL and ask where is DB?She replies he's up at the front of that line with the kids (pointing towards the rope drop for the "RnRC/ToT" Sprinting Foot Race" which begins in precisely 5 mins)! I grab my radio, "Brother, what are you thinking? Do you know where you are??" He waves his arm in the crowd so I can find him, while I apologize my way to the front..."Sorry, Sorry, Excuse me... Mission of Mercy! Child Rescue!" We point the group that doesn't want that much of a thrill this early in the morning to "The Great Movie Ride" and promise to meet up at PlayHouse Disney for the 1st show. Okay, everyone who wants to RIDE, follow me! (MY group shrinks to 3!) Chuckle!

After "screaming" our way through the RnRC and then the Tot ... (IMHO, both are rides not to be missed) we regroup at PlayHouse Disney where the elementary set is staging a mutiny! "This is a BABY show!" Well, of course it is! :p Luckily, Grandpa is not in the mood for sitting on the floor, so they are off to a reprise of "The Great Movie Ride", while we are charmed by Rolie Polie Olie, Winnie the Pooh, Stanley, and Bear in the Big Blue House. Love watching all the kids jumping around dancing! I am the family photographer so I have a digital camera hanging from one arm, 35 mm from the other, while operating my videocam...(Hmm this could explain some of my digital picture problems?)

We have time for one more ride/show before lunch, so we opt for "Muppets 3D". As we are taking our seats, we realize one row up is DS, BIL, and DNeph13! (How about that? And no, it was not on the schedule!! Deja BOO!) We enjoy the show and head over to SCI-FI Diner for Lunch as it is DD14's FAVE and everyone had a voice in planning this vacation! They are able to seat us in 2 cars side by side and the front seat of a 3rd car nearby! This is COOL, folks! If you've never been it's worth doing! *The food is "Out-of-this-World!
fb773264.jpg

I had a wonderful spring mix salad, with roma tomatoes, gorgonzola cheese and spicy walnuts dressed with a balsamic vinaigrette! I saw others with BBQ ribs which I heard were YUMMY! and assorted sandwiches... Everyone enjoyed what they ordered! Even the teens had no complaints (that's saying something!) The "Specialty Drinks" come complete with a glowing "ice cube" that turns on and off if you rap it on the counter. But it gives the drinks an eerie glow. See my DH with his "Space Invader"!

After lunch, we try to make it to the 1st show of "Beauty and the Beast". Too late, unless we want to sit in the back bleachers in the sun... so we opt for grabbing fast passes for "The Little Mermaid". The elementary group is guided to Star Tours by DH while I recommend the "Walt Disney: A Man and His Dream" exhibit for everyone to wander through to get out of the heat. We enjoy strolling through and learning all kinds of new things about the man behind the marvel! Catch up to everyone at "The Little Mermaid" (Again, a not to be missed attraction!). By now, the baby and I are ready to head back to our "heavenly beds"! I call the Swan on my cell phone to ensure the room has been serviced. They are very accomodating about this, and our room was always ready when we needed it! We are in nap mode, so we leave the group to their own devices and promise to see them later at OHANA's for dinner! Back soon with tonight's conclusion!

Awww... gee thanks for the wonderful compliment, Lauren, about this thread. I post here regularly b/c it is such a wonderful group of people. I lurk over at the CB and post only when I have something of worth to add. I must say I lurk once in while at the DB but too chicken to post there!
Besides, I learned so much here for my first trip to the Dolphin that if I can now help others, I like to return the favor.

Disbug ~ going with family is truly a great experience. 3 years ago, my entire family (parents, DBs and DSILs and DNs and DNs - all 14 of us) met up at the BWI for Thanksgiving week and last summer DBro and his family were with us at the Dolphin. Good Times - Great Fun. Even though DH and I enjoyed our time together this trip, we kept saying we wished the family was with us. We all keep saying - next summer!

Mouseteacher~ That is too funny what you said about the volleyball game on Sunday, afternoon! I think that was them. About that time I moved all of their things from my lounge area under the falls over to where they were playing volleyball in the pool. I then went back to the room to get a shower before dinner! I must have just missed you!

;) LOL - I didn't want to look like a stalker staring at people to see anything lime green - so I strolled through "casual-like" as if I was looking for my family - so silly - like anyone even noticed me!

ROFLOL! I am SURE people were looking at me! I had on my "not so lime green" visor, but I took my DISBUG name tag and clipped it to the top to make it more noticeable! I know I saw some smiles as I passed! I know what you mean about that stalker thing. Trying to look without looking like you're looking!

Thanks for all of the good wishes - a little pixie dust can go a long way!

Today was a much better day - we decided to go to Blizzard Beach. We had never done one of the waterparks here. It was very crowded but about 1ish a HUGE thunderstorm blew in and they made everyone get out of the water. What a scene! We huddled under a shelter for about 45 mins and had lunch then they gave the all clear and we spent the rest of the day having fun.
It was much less crowded after the storm and we had a great time.
About 5:30 we went back to the Swan so we could pay a visit to the CL. I enjoyed the snacks and a glass of champagne. There was plenty of food - crackers, cheese, fruit, a hot dish of little mini chimichangas (empanadas), cookies, milk, etc. It was well stocked until right before 7:00 pm.

Tonight it is totally raining so I guess we picked a good night to not go to a park.
We went down to the lobby and there was a wedding going on - it was really elegant and the bride and groom looked so festive. My ds told them congratulations - that was so cute!

ANYONE MISS ME?!?

We are B~A~C~K at the Dolphin...after the BEST time on the DISNEY CRUISE (surprise for DD), and our adventure in KEY WEST!
It feels like we are "HOME" here...same suite, etc.

The cruise was truly "MAGICAL", and DD was completely thrilled by the surprise. We had a suite two numbers away from ours on the MAGIC. Our table-mates were from Cali too (SF), and the 8 of us got along famously. Our servers were wondrous, the fare incredible. We saw PIRATES/NEMO & two musicals. We shopped Naussau...played in Atlantis...and enjoyed every second.

We had the best time in Castaway Cay too...and bought all the NEW Cruise PINS, (as well as ALL the 4-packs for successful trading!). Like last summer...we did not want the cruise to end. We were the last folks off the Wonder. ^_^

We hopped in the Dodge Durango (only 40 miles on it...NEW), @National...and we were OFF to the KEYS! We were traveling LIGHT, since we "stored" most of our CARGO at the Dolphin. They are GREAT about this.

We stopped along the way, (Turnpike all the way down to US1), Key Largo, Duck Key, etc. IT was definitely MORE fun/adventure than we imagined. The 47-mile bridge is truly something to see/drive. The water is aqua-blue, and the sunsets are mythical.
We pulled into the Sheraton suites...on Smather's beach. They upgraded us to a lovely pool/ocean view suite, w/private balcony and the NEW sweet sleepers! AWESOME! The place had 16 live plants in it...very comfy!

We rented an electric car for two days from Tropical rentals on Duval street. They have the new Ford THINK cars, 4-seater w/sunroof! DD drove us all over the town. We dined at Benihana's, and Shula's...as well as abbondanza's italian eatery (#1 for pasta). We saw the MAGIC in port...and recalled our venture there just last summer. We had a wonderful time!

We are heading out now (Olive Garden), so I'll write more later.

Hope everyone is enjoying the summer. ;)

TTFN....moi! :sunny:

Ah, Disbug, love the photos. I would swear that cereal display is different since last year. I think they had the boxes, instead of the built in bowls? I can't remember! But I was sure there was a full tray of fruit on both sides. And this is a DUMB question, but was Thabo there last summer? When Mama T wasn't around there were only a couple of other gals and one quiet older fellow at nite.

Mom Poppins - time is flying! That little dude will be racing around the room in no time! And you will be fine driving! If we made it 26 hours from Wisconsin, Texas should be a breeze. (And most of it was in one day on the way home! Ack!)

Oh Tag Fairy!!!!!!!!! I'm whining again - One for Mom Poppins pleeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzze. Seriously I can't figure out how you have gone this long with no tag!

Any Atlanta folks on here? Have a convention at the Hyatt in Atlanta in October. Looking for info!

Oh, Thank you Tag Fairy! :teeth:

~MomPoppins! Post over on the "Who the heck is the Tag Fairy" thread! I know you'll get one!

~DREAMFLIGHT! Welcome back! We've been wondering about you! Looking forward to all the details of your great cruise (we're planning one for 2005)... Thabo said he saw you over at the Dolphin's CL one afternoon. Asked him to wave HI from me!

~jgates! Thank you for your kind words about the photos (I've seen the ones posted here by others and I know mine are rather poor. But I vow to practice until I am good!) The morning fare had one tray of fruit (had to double check my photo to confirm!) They were next to the tray with the chocolate croissants and special pastries. The breads, cereals, yogurts, muffins and juices were on the other side. The cereal bowls were very handy, although porcelain bowls were available if you chose.

~hookedup! Enjoying your posts from inside the magic! I can identfy with the grumpy issue! Our middle daughter is not a "morning person" if you know what I mean, and when she was younger, we sometimes had to get ready leaving her to the last possible minute! Then we'd have to be silly, tickling and giving her kisses while being overly cheerful to degrumpify! *(I, too, would like to know what room you were staying in on the 12th floor that has a balcony. Did you say it was a king bed or 2 queens? The CM's told me there were only "Presidential type" suites on that floor. Good to know!

~Mouseteacher! Thank you, Thank you for recommending me for a tag! I do feel warm and fuzzy!

~Ozziewags! #1hockeymom! GOOD MORNING OUT THERE!

~Lauren, WELCOME, also from me!

~judirain! WON"T BE LONG!

Dinner at OHANA's

We are running late and a storm is threatening so, we decide to drive over from the Swan. Valet parking is great for this. They bring the car around while you stay dry. We zip over to the Polynesian and are greeted by Jack, the Security Guard (with a definite Boston accent, Mouseteacher)! he is a regular here and "Aloha's" us through! We arrive on time, and I swing by to drop off a birthday package for "Soltwischfamily" (another DISer), at the front desk. The bag contains some "pixie" bubbles, a glow necklace, and a handmade crown *I gave our Fireworks Cruise to the Soltwisches to celebrate their daughter's birthday.

I have made laminated nametags for everyone in our group with different colors of Mickey heads and different Disney phrases on the back. (Ex: "To Infinity and Beyond!"; "Hakuna Matata", "A Dream is a Wish your heart makes....") The girls also have a fabric bow glued to the top of the head for that "Minnie Mouse" effect! I also have bright red silk hibiscus flowers for the girls to place behind their ears (*left ear for married women, right ear for single girls!) We are seated at a long table right in the middle of the room, center of all the action and before we can sit down, the first coconut broom race is starting. So, we grab our cameras (me the videocam) and they're off! DNeph9 comes in first, followed by DNiece9, then DD8. Gummy Worms in hand they return laughing to the table. But Wait! Now it's time for the Hula Hoop Contest! (I'm thinking these kids are really going to build an appetite here before dinner!) Imagine the walkway all around the room filled with kids and their hula hoops! The CM with the ukelele starts singing and playing a lively tune and the hips are a rolling! I am ROFL! This is so much fun to watch! This is one thing my DD8 is able to do well (don't know how, I can't keep it going faster than gravity can drop it to my ankles!)

Now for the food and service portion of our report: (serious business). I must stress we had a marvelous time and our "cousins" who served us were mostly very friendly, but not at all efficient. It took 10 to 15 minutes before anyone even approached our table for a drink order (although we had been told our table would have 2 to 3 "cousins") It was probably 1/2 hr before we saw our 1st course and drinks which arrived back to back. The offerings on the family style lazy susan were very good. grilled BBQ chicken wings, wonton wrapper appetizer, vegetables, rice, salad. The meats were another story. The only moist flavorful meat was the turkey. The shrimp were burned, dry and tasteless on every skewer until my DSis asked for one that was just "barely done". The flank steak was okay, but needed seasoning. The wonderful sausage which used to be included was not offered anymore. :( The bread was served by the hostess as she took us to our table and was a hawaiian sweet roll, but was cold and unappealing. I hope the Disney food service management will address this as the quality is flagging at this particularly favorite meal of mine! I LOVE the atmosphere.... I also WANT to love the food, but cannot recommend it at this time.

Towards the end of the meal, who should arrive but my older DSis and her DD13! (This is a miracle as she is usually "Directionally Challenged"! We thought we'd have to send a search and rescue out for her!) We have room at each end of the long table for them and ask one of our cousins if we can add them so they may join in the fun. Our cousin was not enthusiastic and said "No, only the manager can approve that..." while another cousin, said "No problem" so we seated them and partied on! *Keep in mind that we are paying full price for the 2 of them, we're not asking for them to be included free... They would not bring another round of the 1st course tray, but the kid's end of the table had plenty so we passed it down. We have now become a group of 17! By the end of the meal it had become a challenge for every adult to try the "Hula Hoop" contest. Luckily as I was the family photographer I escaped humiliation and the test of whether my hips would even fit through the hoop! After at least a 2 hour meal, we finished up our dessert of pineapple slices dipped in caramel sauce and called it a night! See you in the morning everyone! Bright and early! We have reservations for the Animal Kingdom's character breakfast, "Donald's Breakfastasaurus"!

Tuesday, July 29th, 2003

Today is an early day since we have PS reservations at AK for "Donald's Breakfastasaurus". Once again we drive over due to the time factor and arrive on schedule. We make it almost to the turnstiles before disaster strikes... DD8 gasps:eek: "Mom, I don't have my backpack and my AP is in it!" (*The previous day DD8 had gone to WL with cousins for a little swim after MGM and left it there.) No problemo! I get on the cell phone to call SIL (who already knew about bringing the backpack) to let her know we needed her ticket. "Oh, no! I left it by the door... and we're just now approaching the turnstiles." Okay, now prepare to panic! But the kind CM at the turnstiles says to take all of our families AP's to Guest Relations and they can print a replacement. Which is just what we did!:)

Time now for one more little snafu... when I made reservations for "Donald's Breakfastasaurus", only 12 people wanted to go... but one by one I receive voicemail messages that now "Everyone" is going! HUH? How to get 17 people in?? Let me tell you, the Lord works in mysterious ways. When they called our name from the podium where we had checked in, only 12 people in our group had arrived, so we shrugged our shoulders, agreed that everyone knew when to be here and walked in! *The rest of the group showed up later and were able to be seated but in a quieter section which was perfect for them!

What a fun breakfast! We were inundated with characters as soon as we walked in... *(A special thank you to "PLUTO" who was the only character who saw my DD2 in her wheelchair and went over to her. He would not leave her alone and she was smiling and touching his nose. He even wanted to pick her up! I LOVE that DOG!)
fb7732f3.jpg
They seated our entire group in this "airstream camper" which had been cut in half and had a jukebox situated in the middle. We were rocking! Put everyone in a great mood and woke us up for sure! The food is buffet style, with the CM serving our drinks. I would definitely go again! While enjoying breakfast, I slip out to grab some FastPasses to Primeval Twirl.

We divide our group into the "Adventurers" who will brave the "Dinosaur" ride and those who can ride the tamer "Triceratop Spin". Grandpa once again opts for the 2nd choice! We do the Baby Switch Off with DD2 so DH can ride, then we're off to regroup. Primeval Twirl (again, a not to be missed ride!) awaits! We get in line since it is pretty short, then use our Fastpasses to ride again! The hardest part about DinoLand is getting the kids out of the "Chester and Hester" Dinorama carnival area. All kinds of deliberately "chintzy" fair type games which cost at least $2 each to play...

Tarzan Rocks is starting in 5 mins, but I convince everyone to head for Camp Minnie and Mickey for "Festival of the Lion King" instead. (*For most shows during the busy season, you need to be seated 20 - 30 minutes before it starts to have a good seat.) As everyone heads out, we lose 4 kids! They have gotten on Triceratop Spin somehow! We wait and send everyone else ahead. It turns out to be a good choice... although we get separated we all have great seats and our group is up front! YAY!
Absolutely one of the best performances of this show that I have witnessed! They are missing one of the female perfomers (the thin one...), but the other singers fill in for her songs and do an outstanding job! Very high energy show... do NOT go to AK without seeing it at least once! My DD8 and DNeph9 got picked to lead the "Pachyderm" section (that's us!) and we held our trunks high and trumpeted our delight! At the end of the show, DNiece9 and DNiece5 participate in the parade around the ring while playing their "musical" instruments! Priceless!

Time for Africa and Lunch at Tusker House. For price and food quality I don't think you can beat Tusker House. We used a couple of Connections Vouchers for convenience, but only saved a few dollars. The rotisserie half chicken with green beans and garlic mashed potatoes was delicious. Topped off with a gargantuan slice of chocolate cake served with 8 forks! That is one rich cake, I would not attempt to eat it alone! Very tasty. :p

Again, while everyone is eating I get fastpasses for "Kilamanjaro Safaris" and even (like a nut) run over to Asia to see what the "Kali River Rapids" line is looking like... It's INSANE! Even the line for the Fast Passes is crazy! I run away! After our refreshing lunch, we head to the Fast Pass line for our ride and meet our first truly unpleasant CM. We have FastPasses for everyone in our group, except for ours since we have the GAC, I figured I didn't need to get them... She ALMOST did not let us through after reading the GAC! :o She proclaimed, "I'll let you get in line for now, but that doesn't mean you may be allowed to stay in line..." Not only did she embarrass us, but she held up the line by doing this. I was so confounded I didn't get her name! I am the first to admit most CM's have hearts of gold, but this girl definitely needs to have a slight retraining session or maybe a desk job! We continue through this line and meet ONLY extremely nice CM's along the way! At the end we go through the "Handicapped" gate and as luck would have it, a safari bus is unloading and we are the next party. It is especially gratifying that Disney has these special buses so that those in wheelchairs may simply be rolled in and have their wheels locked and strapped down to ride. I could see DD2's face in the driver's sideview mirror and she was having a ball!

Another blessing was our safari guide who gave us the choice of the "regular" or the VIP tour (we of course, opted for the VIP tour!) So, she turned off the canned "Wilson" tape and proceeded to give us very interesting insider information on the park and animals! We were enchanted, while at the same time being enlightened! Everyone was 100% agreed that was the best ride and we learned so much...

As you can guess, it's time for DD2 and I to hit the road back to the Swan while leaving the rest of our group to "Bake" in Africa. The teenagers have all split off from the group to "do their own thing" as well. So, I will rejoin the group at 5 PM at BOMA's in the AKL! Later!

~Kimmar! Thanks! I owe it all to the tag fairy and recommendations from Mouseteacher!

PS I will be posting on the WL thread and the Trip's Report forum when I finish the "Swan Epic"!

...ya got one from me, too! (check the "Who the Heck is the Tag..." thread;) !!) BTW ~ I guess that's why I got my newest tag (the GREEN one!)

:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
Welcome Home, DF! to the Dolphin and the DIS - we missed you.

:bounce: :bounce: - Disbug on your tags - Hmmm... recommendations from important people?!! ;) I think your pictures are fine and I enjoy trip reports with pictures. Thanks for taking the time to do both.

hookedup ~ I, too, know about grumpy children - and it doesn't end when they're teens! LOL Older DS (on our trip last summer he was 19) was NOT a pleasant early riser. He is the typical "nocturnal-teen-who-sleeps-to-noon" if he can teen! The one thing that helped was CL - we could all meander down for breakfast and relax and he could be the last one. The same thing was happening to my brother's DS (17 at the time). Teens - go figure!

Disbug,
you give great trip reports!
Thanks for making the rest of us feel like we are there with you!

Donna

I hope to post some pictures of our trip to the Swan soon. I have one more picture to take - a special one for ozzie. :) She asked to see a picture of my beloved canine some time ago (she has posted her original "Ozziewags" -cute) and I hope to take one this weekend after she has been groomed so she looks spiffy and not scruffy as she does now. :)

The Swan CL reports are awesome. So, my next mission for our next trip will be to get a comp upgrade to a balcony and save points for CL or vice versa. What could be better - staying at the Swan with a balcony and CL privleges - life couldn't be better than that!;)

~Kimmar! Oh, thank you, you are so SWEET! I cannot tell you how much I appreciate my tags... They made my week!

~Mouseteacher! You are so kind to speak nice words about my pics.. (I have spared you from the truly horrible ones! :p) I guess I was expecting miracles my first outing since dreamflight, jgates, and ozziewags had such beautiful results!

~firstmickey! Thank you also for your nice remarks about my trip reports... somebody PM if you think they are too long, I do go on about some things! Trying to be informative and entertaining at the same time is a challenge!
