We got a 2 yr old Great Dane yesterday. She is doing great, getting along well with our other dogs but we have one major problem. She has the worst gas ever. They were feeding her ol Roy and we feed chicken soup dog food. I know you're supposed to gradually introduce the new food but would it hurt her if I switched cold turkey??

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It all depends on the dog and their stomachs. Ol Roy dog food though...yuck. I can understand how you would want to switch pronto! Good luck!

I really have no idea. I just love Great Danes they are so cute!!! congrats on the new puppy:goodvibes

We raise show danes. The food switch may cause some upset stomach, so be on the lookout for that. I would think it would be better to get her off the junk food. Chicken soup is a great food for danes. Good luck with her. They are a fantastic breed.

I wouldn't do it - that's a lot of "upset" to deal with if you run into a problem! :rotfl: Generally you should make dietary changes gradually.

Congrats! Would love to see pics of your new dog!

Some breeds are gassy no matter what you feed them. My rottie mix is a killer and we feed her very high quality no filler food. I think it's the breed because my rottie used to be the same way.

When we have switched dog foods with our dog we would do the 1/2 old, 1/2 new--the dog would pick out the pieces of new and not eat the old so it didn't matter. She never had any stomach problems from that either. :lmao:

We have one doxie that would clear out a room!

I am doing 1/2 and 1/2 today 3/4 new 1/4 old tomorrow and all new Sat. I am speeding up the process somewhat.

She is getting along great with all of our other dogs, but we specifically got her as a same size playmate for our other dane, Ozzy. (Not for breeding, they are both fixed)

Well, if that isn't the most precious face I've ever seen! I love Great Danes. Good luck with the food switch.

What a pretty girl. Do you have a photo of your other Dane?? My neighbor has a Great Dane that is Black with big White patches or White with Black patches . Now I'm confusing myself ;) Anywho when my kids see Jeter they always say "Mom the cow is out again." :lmao::lmao:

I can't believe they were feeding a giant breed Ol Roy! Nothing like causing longterm damage to a beautiful dog =( I'm thankful you have him now and you can feed him something better.

I'd be so revolted by the food that I'd be tempted to switch cold turkey but the best thing for his tummy is to slowly change over. Add canned pumpkin to his food - it'll help with digestion and gas. For a dog that big, I'd put a few spoonfuls on his food each time he eats. It's amazing stuff!

Thank you for chosing adoption and for being responsible enough to neuter your pets and not bring more puppies into this world.

I'm glad your new dog has a great home for the holidays! :thumbsup2Congratulations! :thumbsup2

Beautiful Danes. :goodvibes I grew up with Saint Bernards--I do love me a big dog!

My Standard Poodle, Minky, recently went through a big food uproar. I had been noticing that he was gassy over the summer, but I just wrote it off to garbage-diving. We even switched his food, but it didn't help a bit so I switched him back. The gas got steadily worse and he even had a bad accident in my daughters room. We had to replace the carpet!

Well, last week the gas got so bad I thought we were going to have to corral him out in the yard. It stunk up the entire house! My DH had the bright idea to put a cup of plain yogurt into his food. The vet also chimed in--her thought is that he's allergic to the wheat in his food. So between the yogurt and changing his food to something for sensitive tummies, we have diminished the "aromatherapy" and Minky is just as energetic & happy as a puppy.:goodvibes

My husky used to be very gassy. We ended up having to switch to a prescription dog food. We had tried non-prescription food for sensitive tummys, but it didn't work. Ever since we started her on the prescription food she has been fine - and she looks a whole lot healthier. I just wish it wasn't so expensive.

We ended up switching cold turkey after 2 of my dogs got into the Ol Roy and they got sick  She did fine with the switch and I can't wait to see how she looks in a month!! Im hoping the gas problem will be gone soon!! Thanks for all of your replies!
