NEW DCL policy on all power cord things

They don't really need to add traditional outlets, in fact, that doesn't really help a lot of international guests. They need to add a small panel with 4-6 USB ports since almost all devices can be charged that way now.

We just returned from a Fantasy cruise and actually received in a welcome gift from Dreams Unlimited (that's a very big shout out!) an extension cord to use!

It was an invaluable use with two girls trying to do our hair before dinner each night.

I also made good use of the extension cord provided by Dreams Unlimited travel during my Fantasy cruise. I guess they will have one less item in their future gift baskets.

I have a silly question -- what did you use the extension cord for when your girls were doing their hair? [EDIT: I erroneously assumed hair dryers and curling irons were banned. Apparently they are not.] My daughter is 5 going on 15 and I need to be prepared... :)

We take hair dryers, curling irons and flat irons with us- they are not restricted items. There would be a serious revolt if they were not allowed!

Interesting. I would have expected them to be in the same category as hot plates and electric irons. I'm learning something new all the time! Thanks. :thumbsup2

FYI, you might want to check the power rating of your appliances and how you use your extension cord, wherever you use it. My Dreams Unlimited extension cord is rated 1625W, which would likely support one of those heating devices, but may or may not safely power two or more. My daughter's hair dryer is 1200W. I have no idea how much power a curling iron or flat iron consumes.

ironically a curling iron is an item I have seen cause a fire.

eta, a 1200W hair dryer is drawing about 10 amps. The outlets according to another post are rated at 12 each. Not sure what the power rating on your iron would be.

FYI...

I emailed our concierge for our trip on April 5th and they put a note to reserve a cord for me and they said they added a note for me about that. So if you have concierge, take advantage of it.

Do they still charge the $50 refundable deposit for the power cord if it is medical?

When the Magic was in dry dock this last time they added plugs by the bed.

This is only two prong plug. Not 3. We had a real issue with my power chair on the Magic in the disable rooms cat. 11. There is only one place to plug in a 3 prong plug. It was by the desk. So you had to park the chair at the desk. Which block the way to the closet. I did get a extension cord form them. I also complained nicely on the set up of the new refurbished room. You will need an extension cord in those rooms. You should not have to pay $50.00 deposit for a room they designed poorly.

Here are pics of the room the outlet is by the wall near the mirror where the coffee cup is.

Even if they take it you can get it back after the cruise. As long as you remember once you are off the ship. They will have tables set up at the port.

If an item is taken from your checked luggage, will DCL leave a note in your luggage with info on how to retrieve it after the cruise?

This may have been asked as there are a lot of posts in this topic and I looked but might have missed it but I'm from Australia can I use my adaptor? I have Australian plugs for my phone and laptop to charge and need to use my USA/Aussie adaptor.

I haven't seen anything that bans them. However, you won't be able to use 2 side by side in the outlets, as they won't fit. This is why I always brought a power strip from here and just one USA/Aussie adaptor.

Depending on which ship you're on you should be fine with multiple adaptors in the different outlets though.

Yes, any item removed from checked luggage (or carry-on) can be retrieved at the terminal at the end of your cruise.

Enjoy your cruise!

Reading through all of these, I am curious why the $50 deposit is so bad? Really, it does make sure that guests don't take off with an extension cord that would cost them $5 to buy. Now you might ask why that's such a big deal, well let's say that they have 100 extension cords available on board. Without the deposit an average of 35% of those would disappear. Given that they have an average of 3-4 hours to turn around the ship for the next sailing, that would mean someone would need to go an by 35 new extension cords that comply with the ship's power requirements very quickly (which may not even be possible depending on the port).

You can see how quickly the inventory could completely disappear. Now by having a $50 deposit, it means that you will be taking the extension cord back to guest services to get that money back. If the deposit were lower, say a $20 deposit, you might figure it's not worth the hassle.

Agreed. It is not a big deal at all. We did for my husband's CPAP machine.

Oddly, when on the Dream last month, my husband had a heavy duty extension cord attached to his CPAP. No one ever confiscated it nor did the room host ever touch it or remove it.

We used one of these for recharging various devices - $25 on Amazon.

On the desk there are two on the desk (I'm figuring you're asking about US outlets), as well as one on the side of the bed where the clock is.
