I am closing this thread at this point.
I am a volunteer on this board and have had a couple of back to back 12 hour workdays in my real life, so was not able to give this thread the attention it obviously needed.
Some posters were unthinkingly cruel and some were apparently just snarky. I am writing this, eating at my desk on what I hope will not be another 12 hour day.
The responses will stay for now and I will deal with deleting snarkiness when I have more time.
